"You must form your own fashions in a way which demonstrates that you flout the standards from knowledge, not ignorance"

-A College of Magics by Caroline
Stevermer

Listening to:Shimauta/The Boom

It's a great quote, isn't it? I was reading this book last night and that line really struck me.

Started watching the Kouhaku last night ^^;; Had to trapse all the way back past where I work to borrow the video from someone we know, but that's fine ^^;; It's a shame my boys aren't on, nor Kinki Kids, nor Arashi, but I'll take the people I like that're on, and we're only half-way done with it as it is! They did this neat tribute to old classic Japanese anime. It was great, even if most of them I was only familiar with by name and picture and not by theme song ^^;; The only point at which I wanted to throw something at the tv was when they played that inane fish song that I forget the name of but goes "Sakana, sakana, sakana". It's one of the few things that make me glad I wasn't in Japan last spring, when that'd damned song was so popular.

Received a compliment last night that renewed fractionally my faith in my ability to learn and retain Japanese ^^;; My tutor told me that one time after I left my lesson her younger daughter (The younger sister of a girl Meg and I used to be good friends with) Hana was asking her who had been at the house and she (my tutor) replied that I had just finished my lesson. Apparently Hana couldn't believe this because she thought it was some Japanese person! O.O Honestly, as happy as I am to hear that, I think Hana must be thinking this because my tutor does most of the talking, not me! *lol* *Lol* Maybe she heard me when I was reading the story (Kachikachi yama) outloud. My spoken Japanese might be awful, and my accent is far from perfect, but I think I sound fairly not too gaijin-esque when I read :P

Haha I just got a reply from my Japanese teacher about independant study. It seems that there's a departmental (or perhaps school-wide) rule that students aren't allowed to do independant study twice with the same teacher. However, apparently my teacher has given little heed to this rule plenty of times before and has, to use his words, "never been called on it". *lol* Oh that it holds up this semester as well. I really think the general university policy regarding independant study is garbage anyway. We're not allowed to do more than 6 hours total, which is crap. I'm doing it because this stupid university doesn't have any more formal classes, not because I'm trying to get out of work or anything. If anything, I do more work with this than the formal class!

Well, new ep of West Wing on tonight ^_^v

It's been nice having a dog

Listening to: TV ^^

Really, it's been great. Since mom went to visit Kay & Richard (my aunt and uncle) I think Meg and I have had a chance to get to know Blue and him us better than before, since he's become mom's dog. Of course, that's gonna change back once mom gets home on Tuesday ;.; I hope we can get another dog though, that'd be great. I've never had two dogs at once for very long. Only the 3 months span between first getting North before Poncho died. Go here and tell me which dog you like. The only stipulation really is that they have to be cat friendly, as we have 2 cats :P

Kira!!! I'm really glad you like Long Vacation (as any self-respecting viewer would >D). I can't wait for you to get to the end, though =) Don't forget, watch the taped end first, then the other video Meg gave you....personally I still prefer the TV ending to the video ending ^^;;;;;

Btw, something quite entertaining: Nakai doing an impression of Matsuura Aya.....o.o ^^

Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki and More

Listening to:Nagisa/Spitz

I forgot to mention the other day that the reason Remote looks and feels so much like a manga is because, well....it is! The other day when we were at Mitsuwa I found volume 3 of it ^^;; I wanted to buy it, but figured that the best thing was that if I was going to get it, I might as well start at the beginning (I know, I know, I didn't exactly start that way with Psychometrer Eiji but ah well). The even more amusing thing was that the characters actually look pretty similar to their TV counterparts, even Kouzaburo's hairstyle looks similar to Kouichi's in the drama *lol* But I wonder if the stories are similar at all ^^;;

So Meg and I decided to try something which, in the past, has not gone very successfully: okonomiyaki. This isn't to say it was a disaster, just that it never seemed to turn out quite right, either. Anyway, today we decided to have a go at Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki. With the kind we've tried before (Oosaka-style) you make a batter and mix cabbage in with it and go from there. With Hiroshima-style, you put the batter on whatever you're cooking on, then the cabbage goes on top of that, any other "toppings" you want, then more batter and then yakisoba ^^ We also added mochi this time, since we liked that from when we had it two nights before we left Japan last fall.

Anyway, I think it was a complete success! It went fabulously and tasted even better ^^ I wanted to find aonori, which is basically powder-like, but I couldn't find any at the oriental-food store, so I settled for crunching up a sheet of nori and topping it off with that (plus the okonomiyaki sauce. I wanted the Japanese mayonnaise as well, but as we wouldn't be using it for much else since we don't eat Japanese food that often at home, buying it would essentially have been a waste of money). So I can't wait for the next time =) We'll have to make it for mom ^.^;;

After dinner, MeG, Tacchan, and I plopped ourselves down in front of our tv and finished watching the V6 feel your breeze/one concert tape. It's a video of the summer concert tour, taken at two different concerts in August. It was freakishly enjoyable ^^;; even if Meg kept giggling every once in a while :P I swear, she's worse than me! I just know how to keep my glee contained better than she can >D

Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu ^.^v

Listening to:We Can Be Heroes/Oda Yuuji

So right at 3 on the dot yesterday (and last year :P) afternoon, Tacchan, Meg, and I headed up to Mitsuwa to meet Kira for New Years ^^;; We wandered around Mitsuwa for a bit (because I can't go by there without buying anything of course). Actually, we wend to the used bookstore first, and while they didn't have any of Psychometrer Eiji, they were selling old dramas ^^ So Meg bought Overtime and I got the most recent version of Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo (with Arashi's Matsumoto Jun). I'm interested to watch it because even though Doumoto Tsuyoshi's version was no masterpiece in drama-dom, it was still really entertaining anyway, and I wonder how Matsumoto Jun's version holds up against it.

Mitsuwa, unfortunatly, wasn't very forthcoming with much I wanted ^^;; So I only ended up buying 2 and 3 of DNAngel and a random manga by Tachikawa Fumiko called Isshou ni gohan. I like this author because she wrote the 3 volumes series Mahou o shinjirukai? which is easily one of my favorite series ^_^ But she also writes fun one-shot tankoubon as well ^^ Meg got #11 of I'll, and 1-3 of Eden no Hana . I also bought Chemistry's newest single My Gift To You, and one by Oda Yuuji (listed there above) called We Can Be Heroes ^^;; Also bought the newest issues of HanaYume and LaLa. I really wanted the LaLa because of Gertrude no Recipe U_U but neither Gertrude nor Sahara are in the chapter *Sigh* But anyway, got calenders as the furoku (as is usual for the first issue of the new year), so at least that's useful :P

Anyway, afterward we headed back to Kira's house, where we basically passed the time talking, eating, watching stuff and forcing each other's music on one another. I want to emphasize the eating part >D I had far too much to eat between yesterday and today as well ^^ At midnight we did the toasting thing, although of course true to me being me and Meg being Meg, neither one of us had any alcohol ^^ Kira's parents had a damned good bottle of sparkling mixed-berry juice though. It was really tart, but very good. It was lots of fun, although I left my 4 other packages of 2-minute rice at Kira's ;______;

Tacchan what happened with your audition?! ;___________________; You left really suddenly!

This evening Jason, Meg and I went to eat at Ming's Wok and then came back here and watched a Japanese movie called Adrenaline Drive (that's that actual title ^^ straight from the katakana). It was a stupid movie, although it was entertaining in it's stupid-ness. It was completely saved by the fact the main guy character was played by Ando Masanobu ^^;;;;;;; So at least there was eye-candy if it wasn't a good movie otherwise :P

Are My Expectations Too Hight?

Listening to: 7 Truths, 7 Lies/Yuming

I really think they must be, because the number of idiotic, one-track minded, uncomprehending fans of Japanese animation and comics never ceases to amaze me. Should I expect that they know how to use words like yaoi, otaku, bishounen, manga , or heaven forbid the actual word anime correctly? Should I expect them to not generalize Japanese society based solely on what they watch? U__________U ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I got an e-mail from my host mom last night ^_^ Which made me really happy, except that she told me Ai-chan died in September. It's not really shocking....Ai-chan wasn't in all the great of shape when I stayed with them last year, but it's still sad. She was a great little dog. I think my host dad was the most upset though ^^;; Ai-chan was 14 years old, so she's the only pet they've had since they moved into their house (which they built themselves). I think they also had a student from Nanzan in their house for a week or so, but I can't quite figure out why only a week ^^ Of course for me it's kind of like "erggh, my host family", but many of those host family's for Nanzan have been doing this for years, and I don't think I'll be forgotten so easily :P Getting that e-mail makes me want to see them again a lot though! So I really hope that Meg and I can make it to Japan next summer ^^;;

Jersey Hill, Dog Coats, and Pvs

Listening to: Love Me All Over/J-Friends

I haven't been sledding in years, literally. Probably not since my freshman or sophomore year of high school ^^ But on Christmas Eve we got a wonderful, perfect-for-sledding amount of snow, and Meg, Tacchan and I decided to go sledding at night on Jersey Hill. Jersey Hill is one of the town-favorite spots for sledding, but during the day when it's snowed it's packed ^^ Aside from a family of three however, we had the hill to ourselves, and the other family even let us borrow two of their, er, "disks" as I'd call them, to use. Those disks are nice, but lack any degree of control to steer :P I gotta tell ya, I had a blast!! It was so much fun ^^ Except for trudging back up the hill. Personally, I think they need to add an escalotor of some sort, or a sled lift for those weary sledders that turn out every year! :P

Tonight I finally got my X-mas present from my brother. It's this really nice grey, red, and white sweater. It wasn't wrapped however U.U Which kinda irked me. Granted, they probably had been waiting to wrap it before we got there on Christmas Eve and when they found out we couldn't make it because of the storm I can understand why they wouldn't have right away. But they've had since Tuesday now, and there's the spirit of the thing, IMO ^^;;

But anyhow, they also gave mom a dog coat for Blue. This might seem silly, until you remember that 1.) I live in Illinois and we have cold winters and 2.) Blue is a greyhound, which to me is like being just one step above a human being outside without clothes on :P He's got fur, but barely any fat. YOU try that and not get cold! Anyway, it fits him nicely. velcro-ing around his middle and shoulders. So it's not like he's wearing something with sleeves or anything *lol* He looks very smart in it, IMO ^^;;

I downloaded the PV for J-Friends final single Love Me All Over. It's quite nice, but I still like Always better, both in song and PV ^^ Still, you can't be V6, TOKIO and Kinki Kids in white, can you? No, I didn't think so! ^^

KIRA! As far as I know now, New Year's Eve is definetly a go, unless weather should prevent us. I have to work @ 1 p.m. on New Years Day (%@#$%@ boss) so we can't leave too late that morning, but at least that means we don't have to worry about me having to get back to work at 6 a.m. or anything :P Plus I can get Meg to drive home, so I can get some sleep on them way.

Tanoshimi ni shiteruyo~ ^_^v

My Dad Is An Idiot (And Other Things)

Listening to: glider/TOKIO

Yes ladies and gentlmen, my dad is an idiot. If you'll pardon my language, "fuckwit" is probably a more apt description. I believe he thinks that if he turns his radio on and his TV volume up that no one can hear him speaking on the phone.

One thing I should explain is that several years ago my dad started chatting. I'm sure you can get the idea from there. The man chats all the time. This would be fine except for a couple of things:

1.) He's not a student like me

2.) He's married

What's worse is that he seems to think we all want to hear about stuff and the people. We don't. It's not like Meg or I chatting, or my brother chatting. None of us are married and have a significant other we're otherwise ignoring because of that. Of course, that's a whole other issue with my parents, but anyway.

Anyway, so as I was saying, he thinks if he turns the volume up that no one's going to hear him. (Btw, it's been years since my parents shared a room) So I'm sitting on the bottom step to the upstairs (which is a bathroom and one large room) and he's talking to someone on the phone. I think it was a guy. I have no reason to believe this, it was just a feeling, and heard him tell the person on the phone that twice last summer he met women he'd talked to on the computer. One of which was while my mom was away at our family's cabin with my aunt and uncle.

%$@%@%#$%(*& Why don't they just get a fucking divorce and get it over with?! I swear to god, they're worse than children. Both of them know their marriage is long over, but it's just ignored U_________________U UGH!!!!!

Anyway ^^;; I downloaded the first episode of Get Backers, just because I have the first couple of volumes (that I really need to re-read), and was curious. The timing seems to be off though, and I don't know if it's my computer, or the file. At any rate, I might just sit through it just to see how it's been done, etc. Plus, they had a thing a while back on Gakkou e ikou that invovled aspiring seiyuu, and I think the winning guy got a voice job in one of the episodes of Get Backers, although I hardly remember what character or when. I'm sort of hoping beyond all reason that I'll recognize the voice *Lol*

So I basically sat down last night and just read a book. It was great. I love it when I can do that. Just sit, get into a book and its characters, and read all evening. It was a book called Lady in Gil, and with the exception of a slightly less-than-perfect ending, it was a pretty entertaining fantasy novel. I think Meg told me there was a sequel, which I hope is true, because...well, read this one and you'll find out :P

Oh! Speaking of fantasy novels, are Meg and I the only ones on the planet that know what "busking" is??? We thought it was a generally (if not commonly) known word, but it seems any person we ask they're like "...? what?"? Even people we know are readers of the fantasy genre haven't a clue O.o Maybe it comes from reading so much Mercedes Lackey, but I really had no idea so few people know what this word means!! I'm honestly really, thouroughly shocked! (FYI, it means playing on the street for money. Like people who stand in the NYC subway and play instruments for $$).

Christmas and After

Listening to:Asatte wa Sunday/Rag Fair

So, Christmas having finally come and passed, people keep asking me what I got :P And you know what? I didn't! I'm serious! Well, okay, I got $$, but the "kids" in my family decided to do the "we'll each get one thing for one of the other kids", so it'd be cheaper. Well, I got Meg, so I got her a scarf that's navy blue and grey striped, a dark and ligther blue striped sweater, and blue and white plaid flannel pjs (notice a color theme?), plus a namazassin of Okada, another little laminated card of Okada, and a little keychain with his picture :P Actually, Maki graciously sent those, and I included them for Meg's x-mas present. Anyway, my oldest brother was the one who was supposed to get something for me....well it started snowing about 90 minutes before we were supposed to head to their (my brother and his wife) house, two hours away in a suburb of Chicago. By the time we were supposed to leave, it was clear that traveling on the interstate wasn't a good idea. So while we had a white christmas, my gift remains 150 miles away in Chicago!! *Lol* That sounds so Anti-The X-mas Spirit, doesn't it? :P Well, don't think so fast, because Meg and I did get stuff for our family, so muh :P

So I started reading Slam Dunk and I'm a few volumes in now! Dear lord, it cracks me up ^^;; It's very funny, and I can see why it translated so well into anime. It screams "Make me an animated series!!". I'm sort of waiting though, for Sakuragi to get really good at basketball, and for him and Rukawa to work together as a team. It better happen, as I completely expect it out of a 31 one volume series! :P I'm having a great time reading it ^_^v

So Meg, Tacchan and I went to see The Two Towers again ^^;; Such a great movie ^^ The thing is, every time Legolas opens his mouth practically he says something like...really, really obvious. For example, "This forest is old...very old", so that by halfway through the movie I'm laughing before he even says anything. Don't get me wrong, I love Legolas. He's just really full of obvious lines! >D

*spoiler warning*
And for added humor, the "LOTR end, summed up by Kevin":

Ubersaurus7800: bop
AkiyoshiIkuko: ) AkiyoshiIkuko: ack ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: I was typing to Jamie and your message popped up ;p
Ubersaurus7800: I got my kevin claus picture ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: XD!
Ubersaurus7800: hehe
Ubersaurus7800: gimme and email to send it to ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: Okay, so tell me..how does the ring get destroyed in the end? ;p
Ubersaurus7800: Frodo goes bad guy, turns invisible, Gollum attacks him, bites off his finger, and more or less falls into mount doom grasping it ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: awwwwwww ;___;
Ubersaurus7800: Gollum was the true hero ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: ouch
AkiyoshiIkuko: by accident ;p
Ubersaurus7800: give me an email ;p
Ubersaurus7800: well yes ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: why does Frodo go bad guy? ;p
Ubersaurus7800: the ring takes him over ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: ;______;
AkiyoshiIkuko: okay, so tell me about the end =)
AkiyoshiIkuko: after that
Ubersaurus7800: but he's back to normal when Gollum dies ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: "normal" ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: however normal you could be
Ubersaurus7800: him and sam become heroes, along with the rest of the fellowship ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: I'd hope so ;p
Ubersaurus7800: Strider and arwen wed and become the the king and queen of the land, arwen becomes a human, merry and pippin become knights ;p
Ubersaurus7800: legolas and gimli become lifelong friends ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: Is he called Strider more in the books? o.o cause they call him Aragorn in the movie
Ubersaurus7800: they find saruman corrupting the shire when they go back and they kill him ;p
Ubersaurus7800: yeah in the books they call him strider alot ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: wait wait...corrupting the shire?
Ubersaurus7800: yeah he took it over
Ubersaurus7800: his law
AkiyoshiIkuko: how the hell he'd slip away from them to take over the shire?
AkiyoshiIkuko: ooooh
AkiyoshiIkuko: ;_;
AkiyoshiIkuko: that's sad
AkiyoshiIkuko: anyhoo, please continue
Ubersaurus7800: well it went normal with him gone ;p
Ubersaurus7800: and sam ebcomes mayor, and a year after the whole thing, Frodo, Bilbo, Galadriel, Elrond, and Gandalf head over the sea to the west, where all the elves go when they tire of the world
Ubersaurus7800: and since they were all ringbearers they had to go ;p
Ubersaurus7800: and eventually when arwen dies, Legolas and Gimli go too
Ubersaurus7800: because their friendship was so great ;p
Ubersaurus7800: anything else you want to know? ;p
AkiyoshiIkuko: Awww well, I'm happy that almost all of them are together again
AkiyoshiIkuko: kinda bitter sweet ;__;
Ubersaurus7800: Sam got married and had a little blodne girl ;p

Well, there is more to it, but copy and paste was being an ass to me, so you only get this little bit *lol* Personally, I don't like the ending of The Return of the King, and before anyone accuses me of needing a happy ending, you're damned right! I hate sad endings. The end of Phillup Pullman's His Dark Materials killed me. It was so sad and depressing. I do not like sad endings. No thank you, give me something I can smile about. I guess when it comes right down to it, I think it's a crock that just because Frodo was a Ring-bearer that this means he has to go off. You would think that part of this story is about over-coming the power of the Ring, and that somehow Frodo does that. But noooooooo, instead we get "Well, Frodo never really re-adjusted to life back in the Shire". It makes me sad, and breaks my heart for Frodo, and for Sam. I did however, like that it makes a point to mention that Merry and Pippen remain much as they were, so that makes me happy, as I love the Hobbits, even if the rest of the books didn't satisfy me much ^^;;

All right, well, I should go to bed! Hopefully the final tape of Remote will be at Akemiya tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath!

Arigatou Gozaimashita

Listening to:glider/TOKIO

O_________________________O THANK-YOU Masanari and Nami!!!!!! They graciously sent Meg and I the whole manga series of Slam Dunk. That's 31 volumes people, no small feat indeed! When I saw what it was I thought "Yep, it's definetly something Masanari would send" ^^v He loves basketball the way I love Japan! I'm excited to read this series though, because it was always very popular and I've always heard good things about it.

And for those of you out there who, like me, are a combination Harry Potter and Johnny's fan, check this out ^^;; I don't know what show Daniel Radcliffe was on with members of the Johnny's Jimusho, but dammit, Kouichi wearing a Gryffindor scarf (they call them "muffler"s in Japan) is really cute. Meg's right though, it's funny that Daniel Radcliffe's about the same height as Kouichi, and he's nearly 10 years younger. Ah, how amusing it is ^^;; Honestly, the cute is almost too much for me to take ^^;;;;;;;;;

So I was watching Ken Burns' American Stories (I think that's what it's called), which is a series they've been showing on PBS. Tonight's episode was about the Shakers, which was really interesting. The way Ken Burn's puts things together, and the guy whom they use as the narrator make it impossible for me to change the channel. It's that interesting. I remember visiting a Shaker town in Kentuckey, when I was really young but I don't remember much more than the unornamented, white houses and well-kept lawns with white picket fences.

Grar, I had more to write about, but now I've forgotten ^^;;
