I'm Joanne McNeil. A libertarian, indie kid, and INTP. I study economics
at George Mason and edit an up-and-coming little webzine called Protocol
The ICON FAQ
What is the photo?
It's an abandoned church in Vilnius, Lithuania (my second favorite city, next
to Berlin.) Last summer I traveled through Eastern Europe (alone) after a year
studying in the Czech Republic. No, I don't speak Czech. Diky moc
Why not be a hero?
The phrase aptly sums up my antiwar
leaning . It good advice in any case.
Why do you bother to blog?
As I've said before, it's something of a personal portfolio of articles I find
interesting. I used to forward hundreds of articles to my friends daily, now
I just tell them to come here. As for the commentary; maybe it's because I'm
more of a listener than a talker. The posts are my active processing of information
--or something like that.
Are you a 'techie'?
No, unfortunately I'm not. I can't afford to be. If you've seen the skeleton
of my site --over
which I struggled with the code-- you can tell. However, I do have an interest
in tech-related politics. I interned at the Cato Institute in the Technology
and Telecommunications Department, and that's where it all began.
When will Protocol get updated?
Sometime soon this fall. We have a web designer working to make the code match
the content, and the proofs look smooth. There was a delay as my laptop was
stolen two months ago and unfortunatly, I did not make copies of some files.
But, Alina and I have received plenty of submissions this summer. Also expect
a print-edition later on this year. In the meantime, I'm keeping up my pita.
Why do you use Pita?
It's easy. Really easy. They provide free hosting with no advertising. You don't
have to download anything. I can post from anywhere. There's a lot of freedom
with the template. Some of the best designed blogs I've seen are Pitas.
My one complaint is you can't edit the archives.
What sites do you visit most frequently?

What's with the 'icon'?
When I began Protocol, I was looking for an obvious sounding pseudonym. Joanne
Eunuch was almost it, but then I thought it might frighten people away. I thought
of "icon" next, and it sort of stuck. It's kind of Warhol factory, or Sprockets.
Ultimately, I decided to use my full name with my essays, as it makes me more
responsible a writer with a sense of accountability.
Got a Pic?
Yep. Albeit,
not a good one. I've got red-eye and I'm leaning forward in an unflattering
way. Here
is another one. I'm the one on the right, and that's my natural haircolor.
Anything else?
I live in Falls Church, but plan on relocating to Portland or Chicago sometime
next year. My hometown is Brockton, MA. It's a city of 94,000 residents with
the fifth-highest violent crime rate in the state, and ranks under only Lynn
as second in per-capital families on food stamps, high school dropouts, and
pregnant teenagers. I'm 5'11 and 22 years old. I'm going to visit my former
roommate in South Africa this winter. I like sushi, yoga, and Graham Greene
novels. Please feel free to email
me with any comments, questions and/or suggestions. I've made a number of close
friends through the internet. It's a great outlet for an introvert.
