'NSYNC's Lance Bass Continuing Space Tests In U.S.
Source: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1453340/20020409/n_sync.jhtml

04.09.2002

On the same day that the space shuttle Atlantis launched from Cape Canaveral, headed for the International Space Station, 'NSYNC's Lance Bass was continuing his own preparations to launch into space toward the same orbiting outpost.

On hand Monday for the premiere of "The Sweetest Thing" in New York, Bass said he's trying to maximize his downtime during 'NSYNC's current tour to fit in additional medical tests in the U.S. before he heads to Russia yet again to see if he can qualify for a fall mission aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket (see " 'NSYNC's Lance Bass Plans To Leave Earth").

"I'm still testing to see if I can make the mission," Bass said, "and I have another week and a half of that. ... If I pass these tests, then I'll go to Russia to pass the next six tests, which are a lot easier."

Bass had previously undergone a rigorous battery of examinations in March to qualify for a seat on the Russian mission that's set to launch on October 22 and return to earth on November 1 (see " 'NSYNC's Lance Bass In Moscow For Space Tests"). At the time, the pop star went through centrifugal-force and zero-gravity tests, as well as a full physical.

"You had a different doctor for every part of your body," Bass said of the tests at the Institute for Bio-Medical Problems in Moscow, "and to make sure it all works from your eyes, nose, ears, whatever, every internal organ so I know I'm very healthy. They passed me all from those tests so now I'm doing a set of tests here in America. Once I pass that, and I hope I do, then I'm off to Russia, ... and hopefully I'll be cleared by the Russians to ... live there for six months and train to be a cosmonaut, which I'm very excited about."

Destiny Productions President David Krieff, who accompanied Bass to Moscow to film the experience for a possible television special, said that Bass' tests in the U.S. are being conducted "with guidance from Russia." "There's only a couple of other things he has to do — mental agility, teamwork, physical abilities," Krieff said. "And 80 percent of the tests will be done by the time he goes to Russia. The thinking is that he'll go right into training in Moscow. We're getting ready to rock here."

Though Bass' visa to Russia has already been arranged, he'll still need the approval of the Russian space agency before he can get on the short list to be the one civilian among a team of three other cosmonauts to visit the International Space Station on the mission. If Bass makes the cut, he will be the third civilian in space. South African Mark Shuttleworth, who is currently training at Star City near Moscow, will be the second civilian to go into space, with his trek to the ISS booked for April 20.

With the testing at such an accelerated rate, Bass is anticipating having little time off between 'NSYNC's last tour date in Orlando, Florida, on April 28 and his flight to Russia. "I don't even think I'll be able to celebrate my birthday [on May 4]," he said. "I'll probably be on a plane, hopefully. But it'll be fun. It's a great gift if I get to go."

*NSYNC's Fatone Gets Greek Lessons While Filming 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'
Source: http://music.yahoo.com/launch/news/launch/story.html?a=n/music/launch/news/launch/rock/20020410/23/p1&b=n/music/launch/news/launch/rock/20020410/23/p2

04/10/2002

-- *NSYNC singer Joey Fatone has a small role in the upcoming Joel Zwick-directed romantic comedy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, due in theaters April 19. The movie is about a young Greek girl named Toula (Nia Vardalos) who defies family tradition by falling for a non-Greek high school teacher named Ian (John Corbett), while at the same time trying to come to grips with her heritage and her own cultural identity. Fatone portrays Toula's handsome cousin in the film.

Fatone, who is in fact of Italian heritage, told LAUNCH that his fellow castmembers gave him a few Greek lessons while shooting the movie. "They were actually teaching me all dirty words, believe it or not--some that I probably will not be able to say right now. It was interesting, though, to be able to pick that up," he said. "It's a tough language, though. I mean, the line that I say in the movie is pretty easy, but there was some stuff that they were trying to teach me. . .even some normal stuff that was. . .It was weird. It was hard--very tough."

Nude Portraits Of Madonna Unveiled
Source: http://www.billboard.com/billboard/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1461273

April 10, 2002, 3:30 PM

Splashed in lurid colors across a series of huge canvasses, new images of Madonna were unveiled to the world today (April 10) -- one showing the pop diva squatting naked in a graveyard and another sprawled luxuriously on a bed.

Previewing the new exhibition of his work at the McLaurin Gallery in Ayr, Scotland, celebrated artist Peter Howson said he painted the 10 nude portraits from imagination, after the singer declined to pose for him. And although he said he was sure the paintings would "flatter and please" the subject, Howson said he was less confident about the reaction of Madonna's husband, British film director Guy Ritchie, who reportedly barred her from posing naked for the paintings.

"I think he'll probably come and hit me. But if he's a man of wisdom and integrity he'll be quite pleased with them, I imagine," he said.

Howson, whose work is displayed in museums around the world and has been bought by stars including David Bowie, Sylvester Stallone, and Madonna herself, said the new portraits showed the queen of pop as a powerful and charismatic person and touched on her religious upbringing. But the images also explored a darker side to the famous singer, beyond her public image as a performer and mother, he said.

One six foot by four foot canvas, titled "Madonna 2002," depicts the star reclining on a sumptuous bed. Her limbs are twisted and distorted, her oversized hands rest on powerful thighs and her haunting eyes stare into the distance. Religious symbols, representing Mary, the mother of Jesus; the head of John the Baptist; Eve; and a tree of knowledge litter the crumpled sheets.

Another canvas, "Death on Madonna," is a more stylized image of the singer, crouching on mighty haunches in a graveyard, with her head thrown back. Her rippling, taut physique, painted in bright yellow, dominates the scene and dwarfs a gravestone in the background.

Howson, 44, rose to prominence in the 1980s as one of the so-called New Glasgow Boys, a group of painters who depicted the gritty, harsh reality of poverty and violence in the industrial Scottish city. His works hang in the Tate and National Portrait Gallery in London, New York's Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Norway in Oslo.

Howson said he had met with Madonna on several occasions, since they first met in the United States 13 years ago. He said he'd been working on the paintings for 10 years and repeatedly had to alter his approach as the singer's image and style shifted. "I knew she'd have changed again by the time they went on show," he said.

The singer, who appeared naked in her own book "Sex" and has often cavorted on stage in revealing costumes, declined to pose for the series of paintings. According to her staff, Howson said, she was scared he would make her look ugly. Reports in the British media also said Ritchie had forbidden her to pose naked for the paintings.

The artist said he had sent Madonna photos of the paintings several weeks ago, and was disappointed he had not heard from her. Madonna's spokesperson in London declined to comment on the exhibition and did not know whether the star had seen the paintings.

Eminem Settles Lawsuit Over Wife-Kissing Incident For $100,000
Source: http://www.cdnow.com/allstararticle/fid=317786

April 10, 2002, 11:20 am PT

Eminem has shelled out $100,000 to settle a civil lawsuit brought by John Guerra, the man the rapper spotted kissing his then-wife, Kimberly Mathers, outside a suburban Detroit nightclub in 2000 (allstar, June 7, 2000).

Guerra filed the civil suit (allstar, June 12, 2000), which cited assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress, just a few days after Eminem allegedly pistol-whipped him in a confrontation outside the Hot Rocks Sports Bar and Music Café in Warren, Mich. According to the Macomb Daily, Guerra has admitted to exchanging a "friendly" kiss with Mathers outside the club that evening.

"It should be pointed out, there were several friendly kisses among people saying goodbye," said John Gaber, attorney for Guerra, of the evening in question. "It's not like they were climbing into a back seat to make out or anything."

Eminem was arrested at the scene, which Guerra has called "the scariest moment of my life," and charged with felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. As part of a plea bargain in the case, Eminem pled guilty to one felony count of carrying a concealed weapon in February of 2001 (allstar, Feb. 14, 2001) and was sentenced to two years probation a few months later (allstar, April 10, 2001). Eminem and Mathers were divorced in March of 2001 (allstar, March 20, 2001).

Eminem's legal woes hardly end there, however. The rapper was recently sued for $10 million by a French jazz pianist who claims Em nicked music from one of his compositions for use in the song "Kill You" from The Marshall Mathers LP (allstar, April 1).

Attempts to contact Interscope Records for comment were not returned by press time.
