"Bang Bang"
"The Bang Bang camera network is an initiative of the Bureau of Inverse Technology [BIT], a private information agency, in which sound-triggered micro video cameras are deployed in areas of political conflict worldwide. Triggered by the acoustics of gunfire or explosion to
capture and upload 2 seconds of live video to a central BIT web site, the cameras are designed for sustained covert operation in regions of high media attention.
BIT designs and mobilises low power nano-hardware for non-standard news delivery. Their camera units can be scattered by airdrop, inserted by artillery or individually positioned by local agents as global conditions dictate. Centralised control factors and proprietary
encryption will continue to disable and disadvantage similar military event data collection systems.
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on the eve of the Millennium: a BIT camera isinserted in the civic infrastructure [Grey's Monument, height on record 133 ft], to monitor local conditions and potential conflagration across the millennial border, widely predicted as explosive. BIT
exploited a parallel deployment of BBC agents for this installation; net results remain to be determined, although initial findings indicate that routine conditions prevail in the face of historic context.
Video documentation will be screened as part of The Big M, an inflatable exhibition space for video and media art touring the north of England. The Big M is produced by Isis Arts and hosts a programme of works including pieces by GRANT GEE, KEITH PIPER, TOMATO, CECILE BABIOLE, among others."

Man Ray
Man Ray was born Emmanuel Rudnitsky on this day in 1890.
As a contributor to the Cubist, Dada and Surrealist movements, Man Ray experimented with innovative and unusual artistic strategies and techniques. In his paintings he created new languages of geometric abstraction. His sculptures and assemblages incorporate found objects as diverse as violins and hand-guns which helped define a new category of art for which selection, juxtaposition and wit were creative components as essential as form, color and expertise.Man Ray's contributions to photography were even more varied and profound. ......................

AUGUST 19 - OCTOBER 15
ARICHI + SASAOKA - installation
"Luminous 2000"
Experimental Intermedia invited the Japanese artists ARICHI + SASAOKA to build an installation in the window gallery during their residency in Gent. You can find a complete survey of Puddles on their website.
It was in 1988 that ARICHI + SASAOKA began their collaboration. The LUMINOUS series that began in 1994 brought about a new big development in the artistic expression of the artists. In the course of time since then, expression by water and light as in the WATER series has become SASAOKA's individual pursuit, while the work of ARICHI + SASAOKA has come to be focussed on expression by light using fluorescent lamps and other artificial light sources. Fluorescent lamps that are designed to emit light from only a portion of their surface under the influence of high frequency waves or to flicker as if the light were wriggling.
'LUMINOUS 2000 uses an electrode-less system to illuminate a battery of fluorescent lamps. This art work is installed in the space, but the strength of lighting itself is controlled from outside by an amplified microphone. The noise from the street, e.g. trams, cars, people will control the strength of the lighting installation.
It is a forgotten fact that fluorescent lamps can be lit up by radio waves. This mysterious phenomenon has been neglected for some time and we hope this installation will reinstate this fact. Technology does not always follow nature. The aim of this installation is to demonstrate the relationship between Technology and Nature.'
