another weekend come and gone. but it's all good because that means the next weekend to roll around will be my vacation. woo hoo to that. saw ben kweller saturday night.. another good show as expected. my big gripe though was the assy audience. what kind of people chitchat through an entire freaking concert? obnoxious teenagers, that's who. i'd never thought i'd be that old to complain about annoying adolescents at a rock show. i think ben even realized the chatter volume because at one point he apologized for having so many mellow songs in his repertoire and then kicked some ass with a louder tune. the encore might have been the best part. adam green of the moldy peaches came out to sing a rendition of "kokomo" which sounded like pure fantastic karaoke. then the opening band my morning jacket came out to help with a frank black song (catherine could tell you which one). i wound up running into an old camp friend who's friend used to date one of the boys in the band.though she tried to get us to hang with "ben and the boys" after the show, they had to take their gear back to brooklyn and catherine, gail and i had to get drinks at a neighborhood joint.
discussions on the wilco movie won't stop. but this one is great because it makes fun of big bad aol.

i've been wondering why the nation seems to be obsessed with bobbleheads lately, and apparently i'm not the only one. cnn did a whole feature on it. just today when i was buying batteries for my new super-cool discman, i noticed i could get myself a free new york sports figure bobblehead if i just mailed away for it. and if i go to burger king, michele informed me, i can get either a roger clemens or a mike "i'm not gay" piazza bobblehead. every cereal box has a giveaway, etc. etc. i just don't get the craze.
my apologies for the lack of updates lately. it's a cross between being very busy and not being very inspired by links lately. i promise to be better. so fans, don't leave me. please.

i don't care what this review says, i laughed my ass off watching the anna nicole show sunday night. come on, her inquiries about suicide bombers? her conversation with her son on the phone about pig's snot vs. pizza? her squeezing into that dress for the guess party? pure hilarity i say!
not that i have $100 to shell out or plan on getting up at 8:30 on a saturday morning but this urban challenge looks kind of cool. after you answer nyc trivia questions, you have to get to 12 checkpoints within the city via foot or public transportation and the first team to finish wins.
here's wishing leanne a happy birthday. and in honor of the day i'm happy to report that i thoroughly enjoyed the first issue of bookmarks magazine, which arrived last night as well as an old rolling stone pre-needham. never mind that i got the first issue with him as editor not even a week before.
rough closings have kept me away from the pita. don't worry, i don't work at some crazy place that bans uber popular blogs. i never got to tell y'all how much i loved "i am trying to break your heart" and how much fun it was seeing it on opening night to a packed house. great fights between tweedy and bennett, sweet moments with tweedy and his family and lots of rocking concert footage. a must see.
it seems apropos today to link to this ny times story about how it's impossible to remain anonymous on the net.
while we were wallowing in the front room of northsix, after being shut out of the desaparacidos show last night, catherine, leigh ann and i were discussing what exactly emo is. and look what's in the news today.
talk about a horrible punishment. and if he happens to survive the fall, he gets a second chance at death with a hanging.
i was bummed yesterday when i didn't get a chance to get my free frappacino from starbucks with the coupon someone emailed me. but then i learned that it was a big hoax. let's hope the free underwear from the gap coupon i got today is the real deal.
woo hoo "six feet under" nominated for 23 emmys. the whole cast is up for something. could make it interesting...

it's really true angelina and billy bob are splitsville. as michele said they were "sort of weirdly perfect for each other" that it's kind of hard to believe a couple who would wear each other's blood around each other's necks would decide to call it quits.
i'm currently listening to part of the new beck cd coming out. at first i thought it odd that he was going to be playing lincoln center but now i can see why. this stuff is way more mellow than "odelay" or "midnight vultures." more like "mutations" i guess, but i'm going with even more mellow than that. not saying that's bad, just not the funky beck i like to rock out to.
so my tiny high school made it into the new york times today. but of course, in typical woodlands style, it's not necessarily anything great. it's all about a new magnet school opened in westchester to promote diversity. they've taken people from three different high schools that have three different economic and ethnic makeups. you see, i always thought my childhood was full of diversity going to the school district i did. greenburgh always prided itself in how many different nationalities they had enrolled in the schools. we had assemblies for any time of ethnicity and heritage you can imagine. but apparently the education is getting worse and worse there and parents would much rather send their kids to this smaller experimental school thangood old whs.

i'm really confused why this whole stolen delta flight attendant uniform isn't bigger news. not only did they snag that, they took a flight book and an id card. but i guess the real story is how they stole two cartons of smokes. i guess with cigarettes going for $7.50 a pack in nyc, it really may have just been a robbery for profit like they're reporting and not an attempt at terrorism.

the meltdown came and went and i survived. barely, but i do have the t-shirt to prove it. it's always insanity when old review folk and their friends get together with an abundant amount of alcohol but add to it a terminal lunchbox concert with a guest guitarist, a wiffle ball game, obnoxious beefcakes from central pennsylvania, a video camera, a whack job waiter who makes semen jokes at customers, a brat x rap, a visit by the cops and a mason jar of moonshine and you know you have trouble. you can read more about it on variousotherpartygoersblogs. poor chewy's trip home wasn't as smooth as his flight there. after he was kind enough to call to make sure we got home ok since i couldn't find my keys (fyi, they were in my jeans pocket in my bag the whole time. i'm cool like that) he got stuck in a monsoon at sky harbor airport and had to spend the night in the last vacant hotel room in phoenix, which he said was far better than sleeping on the floor of a terminal that had no power and therefore no ac. but kudos to mr. and mrs. bothum for hosting a kick-ass party and putting up with all of the above. good times, good friends. who's ready for the fallout?

in honor of today's date, run out and get a free slushie at your local 7-eleven. gail, that means you.
i decided this weekend that i'm going to run another 5k. my only problems with doing this one is the race is after work (can i really run more than 3 miles competitvely after a day at the office?) and the fact that it's less than a month away and i've been opting for anything but the gym lately as my after-work activity. anyone want to run with me for moral support? i'm sure we get a t-shirt out of the deal.

part of my weekend was spent in beautiful yorktown heights, ny, where michele and i went hiking around the croton dam. we never managed to get up on the dam, but i think that might have been terrorist related. we did see a cool geiser though.
happy belated birthday to mr. pulpy. i would have called or written yesterday but i was too busy losing my money at mohegan sun. and just so you know, what i thought would be a lucrative side business of selling cheaper cigarettes to poor new york smokers was thwarted when i discovered the butts sold in the gift shop aren't really any less expensive.

speaking of ben kweller, when i saw him play the knitting factory a few months ago, i saw this great band open for him. after catherine linked to a music site the other day, i read how rilo kiley was signed to a major record label. i also learned that the lead singer was a child starlet and was none other than the daughter, hannah, in "troop beverly hills." she was also in "pleasantville," which would explain why cutie tobey maguire was there.
so i finally ventured down to the after-work south street seaport concerts in the blazing heat and caught the ever so cool ben kweller. i even got to hear the much talked about "bk baby." the crowd thought he was finished (which was somewhat assumed when some woman came on the mic thanking us for coming) but he and the band decided to come back on for an elvis cover. good stuff, good stuff.

it's gettin' hot in herre... damn, this weather. so let's see, quick recap of another hot summer weekend: spent saturday fighting the traffic to get to la playa, finally saw "minority report" and really enjoyed it despite having to sit in the third row, and saw some true jersey-ites complete with gold chains and what looked like z. cavariccis at the tick tock diner. sunday my roommates and i ventured to the top of central park and explored the harlem meer, conservatory garden and the ravine. we also stumbled upon a gigantic pool that is usually an ice rink in the winter. not that i was going to jump in with all the little screaming kids, but who knew there even was a pool?! on our way to find the subway back downtown, we ventured through a bit of an extremely sketchy section of spanish harlem, where we passed by an empty lot with roosters running around. roosters! is this nyc? were they exercising for the cock fights later that night? after walking past two bums who referred to me and my two friends as some tasty "breakfast, lunch and dinner" i was quite relieved to finally find the station. we got down to more familiar territory, checked out a cool street fair and managed to catch the last few floats of the pride parade.
