Here we go!

Friday, January 17, 2003

Oh my goodness, two entries in two days! What's the world coming to? Things just go better with FavaBean.

Did you know that a hardwood floor gets very slippery after a baby spits up on it? I should get some of those little orange plastic traffic cones for this place.

Henry's now 5 months old, and we are trying solid foods. He likes his rice cereal, bananas, sweet potato, and applesauce. We had tried carrots about a week ago, without success. Yesterday we tried them again. He kind of just left his mouth open with the carrot glob sitting on his tongue. We'll try them again next week. The next food project will be avocado, one of my favorites.

For an early Valentine's Day present, my nice husband is buying me a scanner. I've been taking some wonderful pictures lately, and they deserve to be posted here. The digital camera we have just isn't cutting it - Henry moves too fast, and the images are all blurry. So, coming soon: cuteness!

I've decided to post some the best sites that I was using while I was pregnant:
Dr. Sears - chock full of info, very helpful and practical, his books are the best.
Bornfree - a site devoted to giving birth without medical intervention. I found the articles and essays to be very helpful in setting my mind towards a drug-free birth.
Earthbaby - shopping for cloth diapers and slings.
Pregnancy Calendar - ignore the popups, and you can bookmark the month you're in now.
Babywearing - all about slings and how other cultures wear their babies. The section on the Korean podegi is really cool.
BestFed - an all-around site about attachment parenting.
BirthStories - tons of stories, some great, some not so. Wanna read mine?
Heart 2 Heart Baby Slings - after trying 5 kinds of slings, including the more popular brands, this is the one I stuck with. It's made by this woman in Ontario, and she's pretty neat, and the sling is the best.
The Compleat Mother - I got the print version of this newsletter with my sling. It's a good ole crunchy granola homebirth and breastfeeding support paper with tons of great essays, photos and ads with products I'm actually interested in.

So there ya go. More to come.....stay tuned.

Now that I've completed four and a half months at my new job, I feel I can talk a little bit about what being a full-time mama is about.

First of all, the love I feel for my kid is completely different than any other kind of love I've ever felt. It's overwhelming. You can't know about it unless you have a child. Single folks and married couples without kids will look at your life and think that the baby has taken you over. This is true, but it's the best thing ever. Colic, lack of sleep, no time for sex or even bathing sometimes, whatever it is, it's worth it.

I am so lucky that my husband lets me be a stay at home mother. I can't imagine leaving the little boy in the care of a stranger for hours each day. He needs me, and I need him. Nursing, for example, is the greatest thing. I can't comprehend why some women won't do it. Everyone says that it's so good for the baby, but they should talk more about how great it is for the mother!

I make sure his every need is met, and in return I get a happy baby who smiles in his sleep. I feed him when he's hungry and change him when he's wet. We play with his toys. I read to him. He watches me cook. We go for walks and drives to do errands. He really only complains when there's something to complain about.

I am so lucky.

Sorry about the lack of pictures. Henry is much cuter now, I'll have to take some more and post them.

He's very smiley these days. He's a happy little dude. He really only cries when something is wrong.

I just read a book that Lelainya had recommended to me a long time ago, The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff. I think she's got some really interesting ideas, although I was reading an older edition that I got from the library, and I have a feeling that some of her ideas have been modernized as times changed, like her view of homosexuality, which reads today as ludicrous. The rest of the book is really about attachment parenting, which is really just common sense anyway.

There was a Simpsons episode called "Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes," in which Homer's long-lost brother Herb (voiced by Danny Devito) comes back with an invention: a baby translator. Maggie babbles into the machine and Devito's voice describes what she means. The first baby talk that Maggie utters translates into "Lavish attention on me, and entertain me."

Lisa: Maggie? Maggie? [covers her eyes]
Maggie: [babbles]
Translator: [monotone] Where did you go?
Lisa: Peekaboo! [uncovers eyes]
Maggie: [laughs]
Translator: [monotone] Oh, there you are. Very amusing.

I wish this thing really existed.

I'm not the only one!

Hello, it's been a while. I've been busy learning how to be a full-time mommy. Little Hank is very challenging and lots of fun. He's begun to smile, put his hands in his mouth, and use his Kung-Fu grip in my hair. It seems like he's started to wake up more, which means more fussing but also means more playing, looking around, and holding his head up.

Our apartment looks like Toys R Us exploded in here. We've received many very generous gifts, mostly of clothing or large pieces of colorful molded plastic.

We have decided to move back to the NYC area. If anyone has a job for my Unix systems administator husband, please let me know. Apartment leads are also welcome.

Oh, and one more thing: Thanks to the Eramos and their generosity, we are going to see Phish on New Years! WOO HOO!

Hank is the best.

He sleeps a lot.

So, we had a baby. Henry Jasper arrived on August 2nd, at 2:45 pm, during a big thunderstorm. He was seven and a half pounds and 20 inches long. I did not take any drugs during the whole thing, and while I am very proud of this achievement, I now understand why most women do take drugs. It was intense, to say the least. But my recovery was very fast, and little Henry was awake and alert, and I feel it was really a gift for him. The midwife and the hospital staff were amazing, which I am very grateful for, since so many moms have less than ideal experiences.

Our families have been traveling to come meet the little guy, and of course everyone's been taking lots of pictures. Dad's pics are here, and Auntie Wendy's pictures can be found here.

So the midwife last week told me that I'm 1 centimeter dilated, although that doesn't really mean much except that sometime I'll have this baby. Could be tomorrow, could be in 3 weeks. I cannot imagine housing this child for another 21 days. I've been drinking raspberry leaf tea, pressing the acupressure points, having sex, visualizing the birth, and telling the baby it's time to come out. Nothing is working so far. I guess the babe will come when he or she is ready and not before. Wednesday is a full moon, maybe that will help....

I've gotten a few requests to post some big belly pictures, so here they are! Go ahead and laugh, I know I'm enormous. Thankfully it's only a few weeks more....
