Tennis spastic plastic
Tuesday, February 17, 2004
makeup for S&W tennis was fun- all we did was whack a coupla of balls at the fence. I kinda got to the tennis courts at Kismis late- so the teacher started shouting, "Young Lady! so you are late right! How come so late!" which was bewildering. I thought the poor dude was deaf. Then he started speaking normally- when he thought I was scared of him(i wasnt but what the heck- aint complaini':). Halfway, my tennis ball got stuck up 3m up the fence- the only time i felt like a spastic as i kept throwing rocks at it.. Haha, u should see Priya and me. It was nice catching up with her as we had lunch together..;)
I swear I must have a sign on my head saying "I'm an idiot- talk spastic or beat me" cause Khalil came up to me n shouted 'yamaha' then YingYing started using her pen to tap me on my knee, and i kenaed boxed by chris everytime i see him- i guess this are weird signs of friendship or affection... heheh...

Mad as a sombrero of mexican jumping beans- (TAMAGOTCHI LIVES!)
Tuesday, February 17, 2004

The infamous Tamagotchi is to return in March. This time, your 'Gotchi can socialise with others, ultimately getting married and having kids. How well your Gotchi and your partner's get on is determined by the presents you exchange (is this a microcosmic social commentary on Japan?), which
range from cakes and flowers to ghouls and SHIT. Not that it is strictly necessary to find a partner; once your darling beast reaches a certain age a matchmaking old woman appears and starts showing you photos of potential partners (this is a social commentary!), with whom you can get married and have kids without interacting with anyone outside your own electronic lozenge of desire.
Bandai sold 40 million of the original version, though thankfully they're only aiming at 2 million this time. May sanity prevail.--www.dottocomu.com
Me? ever since i dropped my gotchi in the toilet bowl.. TAMAGOTCHIII!!

Oh Freaking List of Amazing Movies
Monday, February 16, 2004
Watched 21 grams the other day- I don't think I liked it much- wasn't much of a story- Memento did it better- the breakup in narrative technique(tt i don't know what you call it)
I want to watch these movies- anyone interested? Anyone, just any company.. i want to watch them like siao..
The movies in the cinema now are absolutely amazing: Here's a list off the top of my head & the newspaper:
City of God(RA)(5 stars)(yes, they are showing it again!yeah)(watched)
Lost in Translation (4 stars)(watched)
21 Grams(RA)(3 stars)(watched)
Last Samurai (3 stars) (watched)
Raising Victor Vargas (PG)(5 stars)
Last Life in the Universe(NC-16)(5 stars)
Dogville (4 stars)(RA)
Irreversible (RA)(4 stars)
Mystic River (NC-16)(4 stars)
Cold Mountain (PG)(4 stars)
Peter Pan(PG)(4 stars)
House of Sand & Fog (PG)(4 stars)
My friend asked me to watch 'Along came Polly'. My only thought was, "What? And with all those good stuff in the cinemas now?".. I swear the stupid young kid at PS recognises my face by now- everytime he asks for my stupid IC just to embarass me... I'm sorry to say I watched "A good lawyer's wife" a stupid porn movie without plot masquerading as a art house flick.. We didn't check the reviews cause 'Lost in Translation was sold out... ugh. Last Samurai was just entertaining (hollywood style) but I liked Lost in Translation... the entire movie feels like a still camera shooting....

Black Monday
Monday, February 9, 2004
listenin' radiohead- paranoid android

let's call it 'Black Monday'- like the 'Black Maria' of past- when one steps into it one feels cut off from the world. The black is almost suffocating. The rules that apply hark back to primary school. One's freedom is constrained- the frustration makes one almost snap with anger. And you can do nothing about it.
Anyway, I'll just like to explain there r times when I can be dictatorial(meaning talking about my own ideas) as a director because I have to note time constraints n the flow of ideas. With creative individuals, I am most happy to take a back seat and work as a group. I give no apology about the way I work. If something doesnt work, I will replace it. If someone's idea is better than mine- I am happy to embrace it. And I always give people the credit they are due. It is always good to be sensitive to other's feelings cause production is a place where egos clash- however, this has to be a two way thing. So if anyone ever misunderstands me- know that: 1)you can always count on me to be fair to your ideas- even to mine own deteriment 2)I appreciate u, u appreciate me 3)I like working fast and efficiently 4)If I compromise, i expect you to do some on your part 5)I dislike ppl who say 'cannot be done' w/o giving me a good reason 6)I love working with positive, creative, efficient people with high EQ..:) 7)while I may apologise at times i do so only to improve the air- & not bc I think i'm wrong
do you think I'm tough to work with? If you still don't mind working with me- you will have a very enthusiastic group worker... ;)

My Proj 1 is going to be totally wierded out- even more extreme than my narrative vid ex- doesnt help that we are doing from a psycho-script..! I think though i should dabble in a bit more comedy need to try more new stuff in e future.. even the most serious/dramatic of movies have humour:)
another thing: it's great to meet someone on your own wavelength..

listenin' nirvana- tourette

smokin'- double apple flavoured tobacco- whew.. heavy stuff..
looked for a shisha place today- sis was especially helpful. :"Just look for a resturant with Malay words lah..!" "Whoa.. Malay words huh? that's really helpful,"
Met 2 friends I hadn't seen for some time. more photos but i need security clearance..heh. Norm stuff lah. Finally showed my 'talent' her slides. Told her I played Bjork's 'Pagan Poetry' while projecting the slides. She liked some.. :). Great company, nice decor, smiley service, (the staff talked to us for a very long time..) lovely rainy weather..superb day.
:)saw this talented busker at somerset who played the guitar without lookin'- cause he was BLIND. was very impressed.! many people who recognised the rock tune stopped and gave him $$. must practise everyday so I can become busker too..;P Cher reprimanded us for being lazy today. Oh yeah- hahah.

sat, 26 jan

Look at this.. SIGH..! ;P Video very drama-mama. Changed 20% of script to accommodate changes in location and time as well as inconsistancies. Talent: Ian- (old sch/church fren) was a excellent actor- professional. Ran up and down stairs to look sweaty and helped out as crew. Van remarked he looked good on cam. Not surprised: he has a very good profile and long lashes...haha
Cam assistant: Sis- excellent. Never bunched her lines up at the slate, and never complained, and rem most stuff I told her beforehand.
DOP: Van- very good- flexible when i put to her difficulties of angle shots- even suggested a good solution to go around the 180 rule..
Producer/Script supervisor: Huiya- good work although I suspected you would have liked to be more involved in cam work. Even things like checking continuity and switching lights, holding umbrella over the cam are essential- dear..:)Director: Me truly- tried to keep the asinine stuff down- did what I could, managed ppl and creative stuff- yadayada- was not tt stressful bc we had more ppl helping us..
weather was terrible-rainy non-stop so we changed locations. Thanks Huiya and Van for checkg the stuff out of cage on Wed too. What's next? U cant blame me for not wanting to know...
editing might be ardurous given we recorded 15mins worth of tape.. but we'll cross the bridge when we get there..:)

Review of course
Sunday, January 18, 2004
LocSd- interesting stuff we are learning, although i think Mr Heng Han should be more supportive of local films- other than that- sound remains a fascinating subject in its own right. I like practical courses.
LocVd- feel like a baby- this is completely a new medium to me.. need to play catch up.. all the instructions to shout, things to note- everyone had to multi-task-whew! Poor Huiya had her arm knocked up while making a dolly shot with van sitting on a trolley. Mr Patrick Cheng's class is not as bad as it seemed at first.
ArtDsn- I love doodling and this class fulfills the fun element this sem.. just like PGraph last sem. The fact we get to play music during class is plus points for me..:)Wendy's great.
Story- This is the class tt makes me nervous- like writcom for me, ppl expecting me to know most of this stuff- but while i like writing, i'm not talented in this aspect.. i'm the rambler, not the surgeon type of writer. so i'm rather terrible. haha. Leonard is enthu about his subj- which is something I like-
FHisto- the early films are a pain in the *toot* (as king would say-) to watch. But suffer it i must, cause i must know them in order to understand modern films. Quite understandably- lessons have been tedious so far. hopefully they pick up the pace soon as we progress from dark ages to the golden era. Jacqueline seems to think as 'MTV generation' we are a little lacking in the long-term sufferance gene.. she's right.

Sunday, January 18, 2004
actually ArtDsn and Story ain't too bad- although i anticipate difficulties in Story bc i tend to 'tell' and not 'show' in my writing. ArtDsn is fab- it's like back to drawing class in pri 4 except it's more fun this time. And Wendy is fabulous- her drawings are nice and she has good taste in art.. I loved the calendar she showed us... very Joan Miro.. I like!
Been burning mp3 from my cds to complile into a list of fav songs... explains why im so busy recently. not a 'radiohead' yet- i know. Real musicphiles have collections that go into hundreds. I need to get real cds. and more cds.! Hahaha!:) Most of my stuff was collected when i was working and had money to burn. What would you recommend? how about local stuff?
I'm open to all sorts of music except techno I guess. And I don't buy R&B stuff since they are on radio ALL THE TIME.. ;P

watch out for the b*tch
Tuesday, January 6, 2004
havent decided if i like the new courses yet- but seriously for first lessons- they seem crummy. hah probably a lecturer is reading this but i guess i couldnt see their enthusiasm. Feeling very shited out this past few days- post hols depression i guess. Which means im basically in my 'solitary books & music' mode. If I havent been particularly enthu and warm these few days, i apologise. plus not having enuff sleep. kinda avoiding groups now. And fun. and noise. Just want to go sit with my face in one corner and relaz. I don't even want to go online. jus let me get over it myself... if u want to know me.. such phases are very common. Like once a month. No lah, im not pmsing. and i swear alot during these moods- & piss off lots of ppl.. i think u guys not used to ling's 'farked' up moods yet..haha. im no mis perfect.. ;Pthese are the days when i need some beer n music...
btw, the perfect movie for me is coming up.. 'The Singing Detective..' ! about a depressed novelist suffering from some skin disease who hallucinates he's e leading man in his novel. cool. (my navel-gazing movie!) with robert(the ally mcbeal guy) it's a cult classic- i always wanted to watch it- the remake is in cinemas now. and yes, raymond chandler has some influence- my fav morose author. btw, im doing jean-luc godard for my first film hist project..dont know anything about his films- but a guy who writes such essays oughto be really fantastic. thot of doing ingmar bergman too.. the seven seals sound intriguing. The new wave huh? I think too many french movies are full of schmaltz- reminds me a little of korean dramas..ugh.. nice, but really.. do we need so much sucrose? perhaps the stuff in the past was better. there. i said. it. my dislike of (most) recent boxoffice french films. u have the luxury to oppose- with valid reasons. hahah. rem, i'm still in my mood.. im making enemies man...i still have a sense of humour though- but its very deadpan.

dreaming
Wednesday, December 24, 2003
a long time in the desert
i met a man whose touch was cold
he served me coffee with poppy seeds
"this will keep you sane."
and he danced a little jig
like a twirling sand-demon
and made me hold his cloak and run
until i dropped it
and he was no more a speck.
a passing merchant
showed me a box of mysteries
"open it and you shall have wishes"
askance i looked at him
this ragged man with his box of skin
but i left afraid it was truth he spoke
a lusty bachelor came a riding
twirled his tricks for many
many games he played
and soon i tired of them
alone i went one day to a wedding
shaking the sands out of my eyes
I heard a great bearish yawn
turning to look at the bore
. . . never had such light
. . .
passed the darkness of the well
. . .
while looking at a face
through the watery curve
-oh the lout winked.
dreaming is like having your eyes closed and life happen under closed lids.

The story of Ling n Saj learning to roller blade is ever a pitiful story to hear.. if 'twere told..
Happily i wore my wheels
I was learning to blade!
What a big girl am I!
I stood up, i grinned,
'I could do these everyday!'
i headed for a shelf of smelly blades
extinguishing their fetid fumes-
a sight(& smell) for the dammed,
iT was a bio-hazard that rewrote
the acts of terrorism handbook
(What a funky place..)
'Good Lord!' i clattered,
people must have been trampling
rubbish, swimming in the surf,
emergency pissing in their blades!'
i lost my head, i wobbled,
flailed wildly, my foot slid under,
All too soon- Wamuph!! on my fanny
oh delightful day
when Ling shook the flagstones,
Saj and Val in merriment...
cursed macdonalds skate-thru toilets.. Ni! Ni! Ni!
my second NDE- death by malodorous smells, after the first NDE of by getting stabbed by a chunk of flying chocolate at Saj's house... whoa.. i'm a survivor.. (musak plz)

"You must remember this, a kiss is still a
kiss". Your romance is Casablanca. A classic story of love in trying times, chock full of both cynicism and hope. You obviously believe in true love, but you're also constantly aware of practicality and societal expectations. That's not always fun, but at least it's realistic. Try not to let the Nazis get you down too much.

He could have tuned in, tuned in, but he tuned out
A bad time, nothing could save him
Alone in a corridor, waiting, locked out
He got up out of there ran for hundreds of miles...
He made it to the ocean
Had a smoke in a tree
The wind rose up, set him down on his knees
A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw
Delivered him wings - "Hey, look at me now"
Arms wide open with the sea as his floor
Oh! He's FLYING! Oh, HIGH! WIDE! Oh...
He floated back down cause he wanted to share
His key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere
But first he was stripped, and then he was stabbed
By faceless men, well fuckers... he still stands.
And he still gives his love, he just gives it away...
The love he recieves is the love that is saved
And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky
A human being that was given to fly
He's FLYING! Oh, HIGH! WIDE!
He's FLYING!

There's a lot going for Kill Bill- style-wise. It's the kind of chopschlocky homage to Shaw-Bros early 70s wuxia films and Bruce Lee's stylish vengence that i love. Diverting a little- I remember staying up late at night at my cousins'shophouse snuggling in the dark watching the small tv set; excited kids in pyjamas and pillowcases; cheering Bruce Lee as he gave one bad guy after another
a taste of his vengence.(part of a Guinness sponsored special) Watching Kill Bill gave me the same sort of satisfaction and entertainment I had, 10 years ago.
There isnt a lot to pan about the show really. So I should get them over first- One, basically, the stuff people chafe about- the stylistic showiness and naive consciousness tt Quentin Tarantino employ are just charming to me.
The geysers of blood( very Monty Python-Black Knight sequence!heh), the shadow-dance fight(fame?), the theatrical set-ups, all create a world of its own.
I can't help but think of Austin Powers- another exploitation movie. But you see, this thing often referenced to- about the average movie goer's need for intelligent discourse in movies- I believe it
like i believe in the dodo.
The Bride(Uma) is knocked out Mafia style on her wedding day- she wakes 4 years later from a coma- bad hair, a metal temple, ugly gown (n a few screws missing, no doubt;)- convinced tt she has lost her child and her only one thought is to:Kill Bill: the man who fried her brains. But before she does that, she goes on a rampage- annihilating her former colleagues.
The way she does that is special- like heros of HK movies, she searches for tt perfect weapon by the perfect maker- a samurai sword by Hattori Hanzo- Japanese steel for her 'giant vermin'.
Scenes/Characters i particularly liked
-Go-go the Japanese schoolgirl bodyguard of Cottonmouth (Lucy Liu)- cute, quirky who's crazy as crazy goes.
-Cottonmouth -she has such a stillness and strength to her that Uma is pales in comparison during the House of Blue Leaves fight
-the yakuza table scene where Cottonmouth creeps up like a real cute HelloKitty geisha on the table- and the next thing you know, somebody's head off
-the long dolly shot of the Bride in the ladies- panning out- past the stairs- up and down- down the dance hall and back to the ladies- a total of 80+ secs (i counted haha)
Kill Bill (2) oughto be really good. Be excellent to one another.

I have travelled so far since then...
"The Magi, weary for truth, must travel
in lands divined from heart.
Yours is a dwarf star-
no green parakeet need turn suits
no i the tracing of palms
-since the light blazes out of you- so soon." ,2001
Happy Birthday..
