Twin Peaks-must watch series
Tuesday, June 8, 2004

"Who killed Laura Plamer?" Twin Peaks is an excellent series from the minds of David Lynch and Mark Frost- vivid with startling characterisations, quirky real-life habits, intelligent plot, and mystical dream interpretations. Made 14 years back, it is the type of series that demands complete attention and a kind of fan-dom that translates itself into hundreds of internet sites today if it was made in present time. Watching just the first 7 series, one gets an impression of a 50s film set in a small-town american( or really canadian in tone) with all the various wierd characters that u can think of crowding the screen yet seeming so real-life. Dale Cooper is the FBI agent sent to Twin Peaks- an example of big city cop in small town. Only his methods are extraordinary: rationalisation and instinct plus mystical problem solving thru dreams- someone said he was like the modern day sherlock. The lush, pale light of the northwest also permates the entire look- the dressing is 50s, while the hair an assortment of 80s styles- but still, the creative, dark, obscure interpretation of David Lynch is the greatest attraction of all. I can't help but look forward to seeing the other 22 episodes... oooh funky (5 stars)

HeLPP! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins!
Wednesday, June 2, 2004
(taken-elsewhere:)It starts out with an alarmingly fresh-faced young lady, obviously from the 1960s, wearing a big pin that reads, “Hobbits UNITE!” It only gets worse from there.
The bootleg video circulating the Internet is like the Matrix: Nobody can really be told what it is. You have to see for yourself. It’s a cheesy video capture of a 1960s music video of Leonard Nimoy singing (poorly) “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins,” with a bunch of teen-age girls dancing along (even more poorly) to the action.
Nimoy’s the only one without pointed ears, as a cadre of ersatz-hobbit dancers awkwardly but enthusiastically perform the Bilbo Baggins Dance, which looks like a chipmunk with epilepsy.(or zombified chipmunks ;) Their rendition of the fight for the Ring is another high point, as dragon battles are re-enacted with kids throwing shrubbery (and shirts) all over the place.
Online chatterers debate as to where exactly it comes from — probably some Lawrence Welk-style variety show — but little doubt remains that it is certainly the worst vocal performance from any Trek actor not named Shatner. And yet, like Shatner’s overly sincere albums, you find yourself unable to completely condemn it. It’s so bad and agonizingly pointless you end up watching it again and again, wondering who the hell greenlit this stuff even as you savor every last drop of the humiliation.
(Jus begging to be seen- think 'get urself high'..or monty python holy grail great sing-a-longs!its going to get stuck with the ear wax!)

Strange dreams...
Sunday, May 30, 2004
I had the strangest of dreams. 2 dreams that belonged to faces of strangers- and only one truly my own. Dreams with a black stone tower with a eerie tone, of my love that cannot be requited, of rooms made of glass, of a pregnant woman sitting in the rain, of a 7 year old girl too matured for her age reading philip marlowe, grisham & nursery rhymes, of a cracking face, of shrinking shirt sleeves and of the strangest phrase I ever heard in my dreams that I awoke with shock and had to write it down. And this is it, the accusatory phrase that did not belong to me, "That's because you are the lightest of suicides."

Exploring photography...
Friday, May 28, 2004
I need to learn to take photos like those you see in Life or National Geographic- photos that don't just sit there and look pretty, but make you curious about the person or event. stop taking pictures of stuff. Beauty for beauty sake just isnt satisfying enough. I have to 'colour' my photos...

GRRR.

it's soo annoying when the generation above insists you don't have taste in music just because you enjoy random stuff like RHCP, nirvana, the vines, portishead, norah jones, drum and bass- but more because some of them are LOUD. Anybody who claims to love music oughto have an open mind- or at least be tolerant of those who enjoy music differently from you. Just quit that supercilious attitude towards music, and you will find it easier to enjoy more stuff...

Brad Pitt bored me.
Monday, May 17, 2004
I watched Troy with my mum (it was her Mother's Day present)- it really struck me that I had seen it before- except in more sumptuous tones- the short skirts, the bright glaring sunlight, the fight on sand- you know what movie i'm referring to.. If directors have to raid the larder- at least hire a different DOP..
Is there a nation you wished you were born in? Not where you would emigrate to. Rather like your birth cert said something else in place of Singapore. It struck me today that I would like to have been born in Germany. It's a utterly intriguing place- half of it was communist/industrial so recent, the music, the films so few but so delicate- and its villianous history and the bleak humour. Though mayb it could be too morose... In explaining Germany's appeal for me... my dreamscape is German.

the empire of lights
Saturday, May 8, 2004
I read a book on Rene Magritte today. He is the painter of men in bowler hats with hidden faces, of giant apples in rooms, of that lamppost shining in a house's shadow. The author said of his paintings "resurrected to new and unusal life of the ordinary things of our existence, which became stale to us due to the careless way we perceive them [...] (he) resuscitate not only their stranger aspects but those which cannot be named." That quote helped me to understand his paintings- to realise their associative leaps of imagination- how a leaf can be a tree, or a feather a supporting pillar, a memory of a trip thought as stone.

found these wierd drawings scribbled on receipt paper in my First Take at Substation's brochure. spacy- wish i could draw like that... looks easy but takes some wierd talent. wished i knew who drew these...
on a down note, my uncle is in ICU TTS. well, i don't know. I'm visiting him tmr.
saw Leon's screening yest by chance at First Take. Met Mike, Justicia, Joshua and Keydash there too. Budget outing after that- ate 25c icecreams.. heh.
jus trying to start writing scripts by listening to music. So far, I've covered about 30 songs and scribbled 5 pages of my response. I found Radiohead and RHCP songs to be really visual, other songs were not tt easy.. take Alanis M or Pearl J for eg. (Bootleg) True Love Waits by Radiohead is really nice... meanwhile, im disgusted wif my strumming... no joggin yet... etc etc etc blah blah.
ling is bored- so bcome gila as u can c- i just changed by bground yet again... mayb i revamp the class-site- if i super gila-ed. blahblah.
