Beirut - Postcards from Italy

This is just gorgeous: like lounging with a book, eating olives on the beach, watching sails pass by, cool breezes and the like. Or riding on a vespa with appropriate burnt apparel, twine keeping your heaps of luggage tied in the back, and riding on a dusty trail. (Cause, you know, I've done all these things). Buy the CD, it's been playing endlessly on my iTunes.

There's more songs on his website, and I'm sure others have talked about it on hype machine, but really, the audio quality of a cd cannot be beat, unless you find vinyl, right, Monica, you rock snob, you.

How old is your SOUL?
Sunday, May 28, 2006

Kelsey, when do you want the LOST dvd back?

Currently listening to the ANIMANIACS - The Countries Of The World. HAHAHAHA. I should join the bandwagon and put this on yousendit to share. Maybe later. I also like the song of all the elements on the table. I wonder where that website is... If anyone knows, PRAY TELL.

You Are 22 Years Old
Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

An answer was: "You lied about your age... you don't want to admit how old you are" and I was like... I'd do that. Who wants to be 17? I mean really. C'mon now people.

Whatever It Is, I'll Take It
Saturday, May 27, 2006
So I hear that affirmative action is being subtly employed at CKHS in the form of private invitation to Ivy League informational meetings? Or am I just making assumptions. HAHAHA. What a laugh, if it's true. Oh, Silverdale. How nice of you to provide an opportunity for the privileged and relatively secure to discard their pride and hide behind a helping hand your children don't need. HO HO HO.

Carryin' the Banner!

In AP US History, We're watching a movie called Newsies and its pretty much the best Turn of the Century Newsboy Musical with Dance and Accents and Pirouettes that I have ever seen. Jealous, 3rd Period? You should be. HAHAHA! ALSO 5th Period ordered 10 Pizzas and we ate them while watching the movie. Third period WISHES they had it as good as 5th. Musicals, pizza, the general air of dignity we have. Sucks to not be 5th.

You Must Watch This

HAHAHAHA THIS MOVIE IS HILARIOUS! The lyrics don't even mean anything! HAHAHAHAH The best part in the scene, by far (and I laughed on and on in class with no one supporting me) is the "Pass the Towel" part, even better than the "Move Your Elbow" line that precedes it. Compepletely on tangets.

It's like Opera, they sing when they talk about nothing. Meaning, it's as prestigous as an opera, and what beats opera? Nothing, that's what.

And why are they shaving?! HAHAHA

Though it's not sung, this line will live in infamy:
"There's so many fake Crips on the street today, a real crip ain't got a chance"

HAHAHAHAH In the most nasally accent ever.

Then there's that uptight red-headed kid screaming "Move it! Move it! C'mon C'mon C'mon!" Ugh, don't get me started.

Then Nuns. Nuns. HAHAHAHAHA. The hand motions during "2 for a penny / If I take eat too many" is just... intense. There's even a gang dance off fight thing later. Beat THAT.

After this, we're watching 1776, a musical about the American Revolution. We've got this Historical Musical Genre down.

My only complaint is that the term they use for newspapers, "Papes," pronounced "Pay-ps" is endlessly grating and the fact that this the main character is Christian Bale playing the guy who at the beginning the Crip asks about if he looks fake or not. Yeah, the American Psycho Christian Bale. (Actually I think he should do more musicals. Batman the Musical, even.

Also, there are also too many pelvic thrusts in the dance moves (which makes you question the integrity of the choreographer), and the kid who sings the "About a Crooked Politician" near the end, though he only appears that one time, I just want to smack him. But at least they have a pirate on their side, apparantly.

"PASS THE TOWEL" HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Doug Was Always a Little Pudgy Anybody have any idea what's the best TV show theme song EVER? Well, it's Doug (mp3, it even has scat!). Seriously. The bells halfway, chiming into the best 6 second guitar solo, it makes me wanna air guitar. Just say'n. Listen and agree.

Futurama (mp3) is a close 2nd, but I might be biased cause that show is the shiz. For Serious.

There's an entire page filled with TV show theme songs here with stuff from the late 80s, 90s, and 00s, all in one amazing collection. It actually deserves the annoying infomercial pitch because this stuff is glorious. Listening to the Duck Tales (mp3) theme song alone made me feel all nostalgic inside.

Plus there's an mp3 of the X-Men cartoon theme song, which is so obviously necessary to point out because X3 is out which means the awesome level here is at an all time high. 'Effin Docious, dude, as in Supercali.

P.S. Get on AIM

EDIT - I was listening to the Doug theme song for a while and it just might be the extended listening, but does it sound sort of like "Dig For Fire" by the Pixies? Maybe the drums? I dunno, it might be me, there's something about them two. You be the judge. It might be the reason for its ultimate-ness.

In other music news, If you're not subscribed to the KEXP Song of the Day Podcast then you are deprived. KCRW has one too, look it up.

Native Son
Native Son
Native Son
Native Son
by Richard Wright

I think you should all read it. Native Son was written to be something "so hard and so deep that [the reader] would have to face it without the consolation of tears." Basically, it explains the psychology between the oppressed and the oppressors in America. Though it's a social commentary on racial segregation, I think the issues presented in it are still relevant to the situation of minorities today.

This book, like, totally broke my heart. That's a good thing for a book to do.

H-OMG H-OMG. Well. Not really. It's just that Helena Bonham Carter is now going to play Bellatrix in the OotP movie.

I honestly agreed with Entertainment Weekly when they predicted her playing Mugwump, or whatever Voldemort's mom's name is. But whatever. She's playing Bellatrix!! Coooooooooooool.

This movie better be good.

Saturday, May 20, 2006

If you were lame and uncool last Saturday and didn't watch SNL with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, you missed out. The first skit: If Al Gore were president... Too bad I can't find the Myspace one. What a shame.

... And one for the road: Jingleheimer Junction.

1: I used to look like Ashley Parker Angel!
2: I've been told I look like Jessica Alba.

And if Steve Carrell ever hosts SNL again, they can do a perfect "The Office" skit!

the Radio Dept. - The Worst Taste in Music
the Radio Dept. - Why Won't You Talk About It

And friends! (From Labrador Music):

Loveninjas - Keep Your Love
Sambassadeur - New Moon
Acid House Kings - This Heart Is a Stone

This post was orignally to highlight Marie Antoinette, which, being directed by Sofia Coppola, I am extremely hyped about. I hear there are converses in the movie. (Get Out!) No. I'm serious.

Anyway, there's a new trailer and there's talking. BTW, I care less and less that it's Kirsten Dunst day by day.

Aside from the fact that if it's half as good as Lost in Translation I'll be satisfied, I found out from Oh No They Didn't! that the soundtrack is going to be AMAZING, as it was for LiT (Sofia's so hip!). It has Aphex Twin, Air, Bow Wow Wow, New Order (of course), and the reason for the mp3s, the Radio Dept. among others.

The interview from that ONTD! link is a must-read:

Sofia: By reading the book of Antonia Fraser, I had the impression of a Marie Antoinette confronted with the same problems as a high-school girl. She thus keeps at the beginning some nice, calm but a little preserving friends of childhood, then she meets finally new friends, funnier, more "fêtardes", which helps it to leave its cocoon. I tried to tell this part of the life of Marie Antoinette.

Marie Antoinette was 14 when taken from Austria, and still a teenager when she became queen. This might be the reason for the 80s teen movie influences. Hot DOG am I excited!

Anyways, back to the soundtrack; I went online to find some mp3s for you guys and I happened upon their record label's website and found out that they're signed with Acid House Kings etc. so I posted them all. There are more songs to be found if you click on the Labrador link up there. Enjoy.

"Why Won't You Talk About It" is pure catharsis.

The Science of Sleep is $40, so guess we're not going to that one :(

I called the information place and asked who were the "special guests", and he said he doesn't really know yet. But the opening night, for The Illusionist, the director and Jessica Biel will be there. -_______-

Gray Kid - Lonely Love

The beat alone makes it a dance-off starter. The lush synths and voice make it heavenly. The rap makes it a winner. If you love the Russian Futurists (and I know you do, Kelsey) Get it, Get it, Get it!

So, you know that guy, Owen Pallatt of the solo project Final Fantasy, right? Well, aside from the name being, like, the best name ever, his music's pretty much The Stuff.

This completely canonizes him for me.

If anyone finds an mp3 of it, I'd be completely stoked.

Choose the ones you want to watch.

There’s too many to choose from! But I’ll probably pick Science of Sleep. Hopefully one of you guys pick The Russian Dolls. U____U But… that’s probably not going to happen since… Strangers with Candy is playing, too. HAHAHA. Sighh.

Monday, May 8, 2006

I always tell myself, "One survey from Tanya," but 6 hours later, I'm still on. You'd be too if you had 30 messages a day. I mean, it wasn't always like that; last week, when I joined, I had one friend. Tom. But now I have like, 6000 friends, and I still have to deny alot of people, and everyone's like "I wanna be in your top 8! Uuunngghh!!" You guys! There's no we in Myspace.

Best. Song. Ever.
Monday, May 8, 2006
Introducing the most beautiful song ever made:

Song to the Siren by the Czars (Tim Buckley Cover)

I couldn't find the original version to post, but this cover will more than do. Amazing writing, beautiful melody, brilliant, epic span.

I accidentally opened the mp3 link twice and I played it on iTunes at the same time, so there were 3 different tracks of the same song playing at the same time but each started at different times. If that's not how heaven feels, I don't know any mortal equivalent.

If I ever get stuck with 3 songs for the rest of my life it will be this one (the most beautiful), "The Only Moment We Were Alone" by Explosions in the Sky (the most emotional), and "The Trapeze Swinger" by Iron and Wine (the most wistful).

Each one clocks in at over 7 minutes long. Trapeze Swinger and The Only Moment are almost 10 minutes long.

Runner up is "House Fire" by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin but that's only 3:20 minutes long, and really can't compare with the top 3, sorry dude. One dance song would have to be the 1 Thing vs. Float On Mash or Miss New Booty, but this catagory always changes. HAHA

Please, please, please get the song. Please.

EDIT Hey Guys, if you were stuck listening to only 3 songs for the rest of your life, what would they be? Comment/Post it! Go Go Go!

Cold War Kids - Hospital Beds

I think Cold War Kids have the kind of soulful voice Mariela would totally go for. I suggest going to Hype Machine and finding their songs "Hang Me Up to Dry" and "We Used to Vacation" because they make me want to dance and drive my cadillac.

I need to buy their cd. You too.

I watched some of the Daft Punk show at Coachella on YouTube and it looks/sounds amazing! In the video the crowd goes wild when the words start. I've been on a Daft Punk binge ever since. Find their song "Robot Rock" and commence dancing like the people in the video, hands in air and jumping on time with the beat. Too bad it only works if you're in a crowd of people doing the exact same thing. Sigh, if only

Here's your cd track list, Monica, 'cause I'm too lazy to write it all out and my printer's broken. I should explained that with the printer reason first but oh well. Anyway, here it is:

AP Exam
Wednesday, May 3, 2006
AHHHHHHHH. AHHHHHHHH.

Multiple choice was surprisingly breezy; free response was killer. Now that it's over, I might have time to do the next layout.

EDIT 6:18pm:

So I'm watching "How Do I Look?" on the Style Network as usual, forwarding through all the parts with "psychological" interview in order to look at the collections. The style victim is this old, fat band manager who let himself go and who was nominated for the makeover by Kristian Dunn, a member of one of his managed bands. This guy. I thought he looked familiar but brushed him off as some guy following the generic band style's manifesto, until the end where it showed his performance at SXSW in Austin playing the guitar/bass doubleneck thing to "My Only Swerving" by El Ten Eleven(!), which I live for. AND they use it in the credits of the show! As tacky as it is for the song's first TV appearance to be as the end credits of (ugh) Finola Hughes' lifesource, this is MAJOR! That song is, like, AH! First Daniel Franco, now EL TEN ELEVEN! Is this show actually gaining steam by its appealing to various audiences? Not that that validates the attitude of "How Do I Look?" in its vice-like determination to force innocent people into fitchy clothes, its sloppy over-justification and meager compensation for its victims. Still, I likes! Now I need to listen to "My Only Swerving." Ask me for the video, you betta.
