One More Entry for the Night

Specific Instructions Regarding Short Scarf:

-Loosely tie once around neck. Do not knot, or the resulting bundle will appear knob-like and overwhelm the already short length of the scarf.
-Pair with shirt of low neckline, so as not to appear MANLY (the scarf might come off as a clunky tie).

P.S. NICK should've won this week's episode of Project Runway! TOTALLY! Actually, Santino's was a nice dress, but NICK is "just as talented," as he put it. What a sweetie. He always has the good jokes. (Him being just as talented as Santino was not a joke.)

P.P.S DANIEL FRANCO was on the How Do I Look? I had recorded. I giggled with delight. As crappy as that show is, and no matter how bad of morality was shown in that episode (and many episodes), I am happy to see Daniel Franco doing well for himself. I LOVE you, Daniel.

Let's Get Down to Business

Metronomy - Black Eye / Burnt Thumb, a la Music for Robots. The post is Blair's, and he's one of my favorites.

It starts off with a resonant gloom and melancholy strings, decidedly ending on a high note near the first thirty seconds of the track. A pause and then guitar strumming that is a bit groovier and blues-y, until finding the accompaniment of some string instrument that could almost be a trumpet or trombone. Actually, I think I'll stick with some wind instrument. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) Anyway, the drum kicks in to match the steadiness of the guitar and both serve as the backbone and support to the more dynamic trumpet/trombone, which are pacing and slowly merge into a technically stylized victory dance, cheering on the wistful accordion, until the two switch roles.

The trumpet/trombone becomes synth-y and pulled apart. From somewhere at 2:35, its choppy, swiftly cut screeching develops into something of a design, and is tightly wound, taunting, and hypnotic. Feel the heartbeat. Afterwards, melancholy strings return with the denouement.

Lacking the hokeyness of the trained dancing monkey, it becomes a matter of life and death (HAHA). A little leaning to the side of high school pep rally, but the energy, adrenaline, and one-ness make "Black Eye / Burnt Thumb" better suited to a more invigorating hopelessness, and a more justified mental breakdown.

I am not just spitting fire. Check it out.

P.S. Be sure to also check out the funky "Tambourine Crown" by the Clean Prophets, which can also be found on the Music for Robots website.

(Headline for Headlines)
HAHAHA, Misha's entry concerning Memoirs of a Geisha. I agree. The movie was visually stunning, but that's what you get with elaborate movie sets and enhanced colors in the picture. Story was a'ight, I guess. Maybe shoulda read the book.

Real reason for the update:

-The Wildlife show, January 28 at Balazo's 18
-Stars (!!!) CONCERT, February 10 at the Fillmore

Misha | Thursday, January 5, 2006

...
On Will & Grace, Taye Diggs is guest starring, I guess. And... he was going to Memoirs and a Will's character was at the wrong theatre. And Will said to Taye Diggs' character, "Maybe you're at the wrong theatre." And Diggs says,"If this is not Memoirs of a Geisha, then why are the people coming out of the theatre with an expression like, ehh." And he did the shaky hand thing. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. HAHAHA. HAHA. Heh. ..

OK, I Guess I'll Post Again for the Third Time in a Row

Director's Guild Nominees:

Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain (Do I have to post the rest? HAHA)

George Clooney, Good Night and Good Luck
Paul Haggis, Crash (Sure, Directing = Stellar, but Crash? Ugh. HAHA)
Bennett Miller, Capote (WHAT!? WHOA!)
Steven Spielberg, Munich (UGH)

WHY SPIELBERG?! Munich was snubbed for the rest of the guild nominations so HAH. And yes, it is pretentious of me to think Crash is pretentious. Wotev. I would have gladly replaced Spielberg with who ever directed Walk the Line, just cause for this oscar season, I have a personal vendetta against Spielberg. After BBM and Ang Lee win, I'll remember Artificial Intelligence and go back to normal. HAHA

Screen Actor's Guild Nominees:

Actor:
Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man (GROSS!)
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck

Actress:
Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents (WHY?!)
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Charlize Theron, North Country (GROSS!)
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Ziyi Zhang, Memoirs of a Geisha (YES YES YES! SHE'S SO IN! THIS + GLOBES = OSCAR NOMINATION!!)

Supporting Actor:
Don Cheadle, Crash (YES NO TERRENCE HOWARD! SO SNUB'D!)
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash (YES!)
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain

Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, Junebug (YES!)
Catherine Keener, Capote (I would have prefered her in Virgin.. HAHA)
Frances McDromand, North Country (GROSS! STOP THIS NORTH COUNTRY LOVE!)
Rachel Weisz, Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams, Brokeback

Ensemble:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck
Hustle & Flow (UGH, HOWARD!)

Overall I'm happy. Brokeback Mountain did a full sweep by being nominated by Producer's Guild and Screenwriter's Guild yesterday, meaning with todays nominations it's gotten nominations from all four!!! Capote and Crash did so too, which is cool for Capote (it just better not win nothing from beloved Brokeback), and you know how I feel about Crash. HAHA

I would have liked Steve Carrell in 40-Year Old Virgin to be nominated for Best Actor instead of Russel Crow. NO THANDIE NEWTON?! WTF?!? NO GONG LI?! DOUBLE WTF! At least my precious, precious Ziyi Zhang got in. I was losing hope for her, but now, I might switch from Team Felicity to Team ZIYI! Best Actress has been all about Felicity vs. Reese so far, hopefully they'll split votes in the academy and the winner becomes Ziyi Zhang for a WONDERFUL UPSET! At a recent academy screening of Memoirs of a Geisha, it was reported that Academy Voters stood up and applauded when her name came on screen in the credits. YES YES YES!

Also, I'm totally in hate for all these nominations for North Country. And Cinderella Man.

Brokeback and Good Night and Good Luck are locks for best picture nominations. Same for Capote and Crash too. It looks like it's either Walk the Line vs Munich for the fifth slot. Walk the line gets it, for making more money (Munich stank at box office) and it will be the only major studio movie to be nominated. Hopefully this trend will continue and actual GOOD movies are getting what they deserve from the Oscars. No more Gladiator winning over Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That was a Crime. A CRIME.

I'm going to watch Zoolander now and laugh my butt off. Speaking of, I wanna switch from Horror to BIOPIC! HAHA I really wanna do one for Montgomery Clift. I even have a screenplay in mind. Really. Actually I might wanna do comedy instead now. HAHA Oh well lemme sleep on it.

Hawt

Time for you to find out about Stereogum, if you haven't already.

They recently had a contest of Mr. Indie Rock 2005, and Sufjan Stevens won. Raise your hand if you're in love with him. (Mariela's boy, Jufjan, raises his hand HAHAHA)

The rapper from the Chronic(Cles) of Narnia was even voted for. HAHAHA

OMFG. Jake Gyllenhaal ONLY GOT ONE VOTE?!? Are they BLIND?! I didn't know you could vote for him! HAHA I bet it was Misha. This is her showing how upset she is. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!

I voted for Sufjan this year, and Feist on the Girl Version, who only was only 2nd. Sigh. Oh well, winner was Jenny Lewis, but I was pleasently suprised that M.I.A. got up in there. Kewl. But where was Sharin Foo?! And Amy Millan for that matter! TRAVESTY.

P.S. "Since U Been Gone," Kidz Bop Style. HAHAHA The Asian kids in red and yellow are so spastic. HAHA I'm so proud.

Noizay Funkay
So, Mariela and I talked before about using this thing for music spreading. I'm gonna try. Chaka KaHn!

I first came accross We Are Wolves last summer, from the blog Teaching the Indie Kids to Dance Again. But when my computer crashed, when I went back to retrieve their song, "La Nature," the link was broken.

Months later, I'm listening to Daft Punk's "Robot Rock", and my appetite for electronic funk is multiplied. I remember "La Nature" just then, and with a quick Google search, I find We Are Wolves's website and lo and behold, they're offering La Nature as a download, and another song of theirs I've never heard, "Little Birds."

The song starts with a crash of synth that sounds more like a fire alarm than a song opener, but after a few seconds, the drums come in with a groovy rhythm, not too fast or slow, underneath the high pitched wailing. Then, the bass kicks in as the layers wash over each other and the screech of the synth isn't distracting anymore. It would seem strange without it. Then the sound clips of animal noises and echoing fuzzy shouts from humans. The song then has a little handclap transition, and I love me some handclaps. After that, the synth becomes structured to a rising rift, gaining momentum as the drums get louder, and the few words are put through a loudspeaker as they whine "human nature." Then it sort of keeps the grungy noise rock persona into a drum solo with, yes, more noises.

The drums and the bass get into your head. Listen to headphones at top volume. Tell me you don't want to dance. I dare you. They have a little kick to it, and I'm desperate enough to type it out:

Instead of going "bum bum bum," it sort of goes "bum bum ba-bum." Kind of like Vanilla Ice trying to differentiate his song from Under Pressure. But this time I get it. HAHA

Funnnkay. HAHA Wotev. You'll know when you hear. It's a laid back tempo, but the bassline makes you wanna boogie. I'm soooo not joking.

I remember I let Reslyn listen to "La Nature" before it was gone forever from my iPod. She thought I was trying to scare her, but with enough listens, she tolerated it. She probably did like it, just not enough to admit it. Jerk. HAHA

Listen and Shake It: We Are Wolves - La Nature (Mp3)

If that increases your interest, their website has another song, "Little Birds," but I prefer "La Nature." Just say'n, ese.

If you liked this, I recommend "House of Jealous Lovers" by the Rapture. The funk neva stops.

Movies
I need to keep a list of my favorite movies. OMG.

In no particular order (though I will figure that out later):

-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
-L'auberge espagnole (2002)
-Closer (2004)
-Crash (2004)
-Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
-The Secret Garden (1993)
-Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
-The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
-La marche de l'empereur (2005) (HAHA)
-Monsoon Wedding (2001)
-Taxi Driver (1976)
-Brokeback Mountain (2005)
-The Godfather (1972)
-Requiem for a Dream (2000)
-Before Sunset (2004)
-Singin' in the Rain (1952) (I know...)
-Lola rennt (1998)
-Big Fish (2003)

That's all I can think of. And for the most outrageously annoying, here's what I can think of now (in no particular order):

-Jeux d'enfants (2003)
-Garden State (2004)
-American Beauty (1999)
-The Godfather: Part III (1990)
-Casablanca (1942)

And then there's Fight Club (1999), which was not good enough to make my list of favorites, but deserves credit anyway.

The last movie I will have seen for the year of 2005 is Crash (2004), as long as I make sure not to watch anymore movies for the rest of the evening and tomorrow. The first movie I will see in the year 2006 will be Memoirs of a Geisha (2005). Exciting.

My soundtrack rocks. I just don't have a plotline yet.

im too cheap to buy checks

In the year 2006 I resolve to:
Never balance my checkbook.

Get your resolution here

soundtrack:
so.. When his mom dies, a preteen boy moves from the big city to his old man's house, escaping a life of punk music, drug addiction, and rollerblading.

He has trouble living with his pa.

He cant handle the tuff cowboy kids at school. Though he's attracted to some blonde that sits in front of him.

He finds on his way home a puppy (it has something special like 3 legs, dunno yet, suggestions?)...well he keeps it. big shocker.

He cares for it <(insert playful tunes).

Well his dad finds out, gets angry, kid stomps off, meets the blonde.

Shes all "what a cute dog.whats wrong?" hes all "simple plan. simple simple, plan plan"

They become friends.

She probably sticks up for him, and her friends become his.

So a jealous kid plans to hurt the dog.

The dog goes missing.

The boy cries.

They reunite in a grassy meadow. El Fin

At this point the whole audience better be sobbing. Maybe i should show them growing old together? I already don't like the blonde. Maybe she's a phase and there's another girl he befriends and he'll end up with her.

ok so heres my options: punk, acoustic, some kinda rock music, beach boys.

ps.monica i've got Great Italian Love Songs. haha. there's a really good opera song on it.

I hate Jay Leno's audience. They did it AGAIN. He was like, "So, I watched Brokeback Mountain this weekend" and his audience responded, "NOO!" ... I mean, you couldn't hear it. But it was with that attitude. HAHAHA.

Brokeback Mountain
We watched it at this hidden cinema behind Kohl's in Pleasant Hill. I paid matinee price for three.

It was different from what I'd expected, but I liked it. The movie wasn't cheesy at all, and the "action" was a lot tamer than what I had thought it would be. HAHA, my sisters are phobes. Whateva. It didn't bother me.

The movie was weakly bittersweet and left me with dusty eyes. It was gentle and subtly hopeless. Yep. I liked it.

Afterward, we shopped at Sun Valley Mall in the adjacent town. I bought:

-Lacy rose blouse with puffed short sleeves
-Black blouse with puffed elbow-length sleeves and tied collar
-Beige shirt with maroon flower print, stomach pocket, and puffed short sleeves

Puffed sleeves.

I almost bought a gray long-sleeved dress with attached sash at the neck that tied like a short scarf, but my sister told me not to. Just wait, I'm a goin' back and gettin' it.

Xmas 2005
I'm realizing that no one ever buys me jewelry that I like (ESotSM Ref, y'dig?). Sike, make that clothes, items, and objects. I like the DVDS I chose for myself, anyway. That I wrapped and waited to open until today. Yeah, I dislike Christmas. Bring on the New Year.

Low Points:

- Kelly green track jacket (I gave it to my cousin)
- Lime green and blue striped button down
- Guitar, which I'll never, ever use.

High Points: (My Presents to Me)

- American Beauty
- As Good As It Gets
- Boogie Nights
- City of God
- Hotel Rwanda
- Far From Heaven
- Joy Luck Club
- The Pianist
- Zoolander

- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's CD
- Chelsea Boots

I gave the jacket to my cousin who likes it anyway, and the shirt... I think I left it on the floor after unwrapping gifts to go back to sleep. I'm returning the guitar for $217.00 and buying myself better clothes. I bought my auntie a ridunkulously expensive bag from Nordstrom's for Secret Santa. She besta like it. But I wouldn't mind a trip to Seattle to return it for her, and do some shopping for myself. HAHA I'm not spoiled, wotev.

As THOUGH. HAHA You thought you got me, but you sooooOoo didn't. Gahd, I thought you knew I write in British Spelling cause it's the only thing I'm used to. HAH. It's like what my brother did today:

So my uncle toasted some bread and it looked different than the normal bread we eat. My dad asks, "What kind of bread is this?" and my brother replies: "Sourdough. Sourdough is yellow." Impressed, my cousin gives him a high five.

Normal sourdough isn't yellow. We were eating either potato or texas toast. HAHA How stupid. Ok, wotev. I can't believe there was a high five involved. My Gahd.
