Thursday, April 6, 2000 High Fidelity
Last weekend I saw the movie High Fidelity. It's got John Cusack as a record store owner/music fanatic trying to make sense of his past and current relationships. There was a part near the end where Cusack is discussing the proper ways to make a mix tape. The scary thing is that he's right, and I know it. My dream job is record store owner. My store would probably be a lot like Cusack's, only I wouldn't hire Jack Black.
I expected to hear the Elvis Costello song "High Fidelity" in the soundtrack, but I didn't. I guess that wouldn've been too obvious.
Thursday, April 6, 2000 It's the New Zoo Revue!
[via Mister Pants]
Once in awhile, when I'm flipping through the TV channels in St. Louis, I come across this show on some dinky religious station. I never knew what it was called, only that it was extremely frightening looking and had an unfortunately high singing puppet content.
Freddie the Frog is quite grotesque. He's also step-brother to Peter Pan, the eternal little boy." Er, right.
Here we have Doug Momary, the co-creator of this ghastly little program. Either this photo is twenty years old, or ol' Doug needs to get out more.
Thursday, April 6, 2000 Rock parody salutes the dead
"Insomniacs with a taste for rock spoofs can enjoy a new offering on Channel 4 tonight when The House of Rock hits our screens. Animated by Andy Watt and written by Gavin Claxton, Richard Preddy and Gary Howe, HoR features a cast of dead rock stars who share a house together. Freddie Mercury, Marc Bolan, John Denver, Kurt Cobain and Biggie Smalls (aka The Notorious B.I.G.) decide to hold their own gong bonanza, the Dead Rock Star Awards, in tonight's debut, with future episodes further ramming the barriers of taste via The Notorious B.I.G.'s sexual obsession with a fridge. You have to be there.
The House of Rock, 2.10am Thursday April 6th
God, looking at this I realized once more just how deficient American television is. Look what BBC viewers get to see!
Monday, April 3, 2000 Lobster Gram
I was watching Jeopardy this afternoon, and one of the prizes was a gift certificate to Lobster Gram, a company that delivers live lobsters.
"Sending live Maine lobsters — Whoever thought of such a crazy idea?" This guy did. The question remains, why?
Monday, March 27, 2000 Freaks and Geeks: Cancelled!
I'm sorry, but this news is nothing short of tragic. I really don't know why NBC even bothered picking up the show if the only thing it was going to do is completely neglect it. Awful time slots, constant "hiatuses," and a total lack of promotion are just a few of the things that doomed F&G from the very start. Have you seen some of the other shows NBC has been trying to cram down our throats lately? God, the Devil and Bob anyone? How about the stinking, fetid Daddio? Daddio??? Ugh.
Thanks to Paul and Judd and everyone else involved with this brilliant show. Hopefully F&G will be picked up by another network soon, and the laughs and great moments will live on.
Guys and gals, I salute you.
Monday, March 20, 2000 Save Yourself from Communism!
I have a weak spot for hilarious American anti-Communist propaganda. This one is too good to not pass on.
"I am so sorry you are going to have to live under Communism."
Tuesday, March 14, 2000 Freaks and Geeks
I'm not sure if anyone else in America is watching the show Freaks and Geeks, but it's so good! It's creepy just how realistic the show's producers have recreated the high school experience. Reminds me of my geek experience in H.S. The characters are completely believable, the emotion is touching, and the comedy is completely off the wall. I haven't been able to get any of my friends to start watching, but oh well. Any show that opens with one of the characters air drumming along to Rush's "The Spirit of Radio" has to be alright, you know?
And how can you not like Linda Cardellini as Lindsay Weir? Rrowwwr...what a cutie! (here's another pic)
Read this essay on Salon.com to find out just why you should be watching this brilliant show.
Mighty Big TV has a great Freaks and Geeks episode guide.
