HBO's the Wire Blog
I spent a lot of time this weekend watching the Wire. So good. And when I was looking around the web for some info, I found that there wasn't a simple place with a lot of good links on the show. There probably is but maybe google just couldn't find it for me? So I threw some together on a new blog and added a newsfeed about the show as well.

Men's Clothes Suck
I'm totally copying off Andrew and starting a blog to help guys find cool clothes that are cheap and don't suck. It's just like when we were in kindergarten and I totally stole his joke about elephants and toothaches. Man, I got a lot of ass with that joke. -luku

Birthday Hulk
"And so on and so on. The Birthday Hulk became a bit more subtle in later years, though her antics include forcing boys to make out with her, BECAUSE IT'S HER SPECIAL DAY, knocking people to the ground on a dance floor with her wildly flailing elbows, because BIRTHDAY HULK OWNS THIS SONG, BITCH!, and throwing a bowling ball smack into an innocent car parked on the street. What? BIRTHDAY HULK DOESN'T KNOW HER OWN STRENGTH!"

Our Meeting with Song Sung-young
Sometimes it's nice to read about people using the internet to connect for purposes other than sex and money. Like visiting families in another country to see how they live. And, I can't say this strongly enough, not have sex with them. God, what's with you and the always trying to get it on thing? The link above is from the perspective of the French woman who visits a Korean farmer/reporter, and here is a report by the Korean farmer she visits. It's all very nice.

Katherine Harris is not just scary looking, she's scary in the inside, where it counts
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws." "If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris said. Separation of church and state is "a lie we have been told," Harris said in the interview, published Thursday, saying separating religion and politics is "wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers."

ruined music
"But perhaps the worst thing about the breakup is the fact that music gets caught in the fallout. Everyone has a song, album, artist, or band that’s been ruined by an ex (or, more accurately, by memories of an ex). Ruined Music is the place to talk about the music you’ve lost: the songs you can’t stand to hear ever again, that record she always played when she was over at your house, the band you went to see together a week before he called it quits, That Song that was on That Mix, the record that was playing the night you (fill in the blank), the album you got for a Valentine’s Day gift." I myself can't listen to "My Humps" anymore.

Yukgaejang is good when you have a cold cause it clears out your head (spicy) and Samgye-tang is one of the best, simple yet elegant chicken soups I've ever had (but don't forget you need to add your own salt and pepper), and the Mandu-guk is good and safe for you wimpy eaters afraid of new things.

world canine freestyle
"Musical Freestyle is a choreographed musical program performed by handlers and their dogs. The object of musical freestyle is to display the dog and handler in a creative, innovative and original dance, using music and intricate movements to showcase teamwork, artistry, costuming, athleticism and style in interpreting the theme of the music. Heelwork-to-Music incorporates traditional dog obedience and the art of dressage with the inclusion of musical interpretation, dance elements, and costuming with an emphasis on non-standard obedience movements. Both Musical Freestyle and Heelwork-To-Music routines should create a visually exciting display which is enjoyable to watch and which is equally enjoyable to dogs and handlers executing the programs. Canine freestyle is a showcase that truly demonstrates the joys and fun of bonding with your pet."

mathew barney vs. donkykong
"Matthew Barney's Cremaster 3 begins a serious negotiation between art and video games. There have been exhibits and books celebrating game design in recent years, while digital art has introduced interactivity into museums. Painters have created canvases with game characters. Cremaster 3 lacks the obvious cultural references, but its absurdity, repetition, level design and use of landscape as narrative establishes a stronger connection to video games than these other works."

Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, and of course, Danny Trejo. Oh, and your favorite, Enrique Iglesias. I read it was shot two years ago and the studio has been holding on to it, so I don't know...but with that cast it should at least be fun to watch. Mickey Rourke! We want to get them into your hands. If you've never bought a graphic novel before, we encourage you to browse the site. We've classified the books by genre to make it easier for you to find something that appeals to your particular tastes." Great site. Read graphic novels if you don't already. I know a lot of you who like to read novels don't because you never really read comics, and it hurts me, my heart. I know it's scary trying something new but graphic novels can be as enjoyable as a good "normal" novel. And if more of you start buying them, that means I have more people to borrow them from...

It clocks in at seven volumes and 3000 pages (it was originally 4000), about 300 pages longer than all five books in the Harry Potter series combined." "HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - She's a 46-year-old runaway, former drug addict and high school student, but she may also be turning into a movie star. The character of Jerri Blank, created by actress Amy Sedaris on the Comedy Central show "Strangers With Candy," may soon have a shot at big-screen stardom." --from Syd

workingbikes.org
I just heard about these guys on the radio today. Good place to buy used bikes in Chicago. The money you spend there goes to sending bikes and parts to other countries. "Since its inception in 2001, the Working Bikes Cooperative has shipped 1300 bikes and parts to Nicaragua, Cuba, and Ghana." I want a cruiser bike also. I'll have to check it out.

I picked up the latest Granta but then I put it down and didn't buy it. Was any of it good? Let me know if you have read it. Here's a site via slate.com that has a list of the writers they picked and a little info. I actually want to get "Granta 77: What We Think of America". That looks interesting.

marky mark
I really want to see the Italian Job but after I found out that there's a man walking around without an eye because Mark Wahlberg attacked him in 1988 (Wahlberg served all of 45 days out of two years), it makes me not want to see any movies he's in. I know he was a teenager when he did it and maybe he's actually changed and not a crazy racist now but...An eye! That's just fucked up and I can't stop thinking about Mr. Hoa Trinh walking around with a glass eye or an eye patch whenever I see Wahlberg up on screen.

Photobloggers vs. Camgirls
"One of the most interesting rivalries on the internet is the tug of war between the photobloggers and the camgirls for control of fotolog.net. How can you tell one from the other?" the Gothamist breaks it down. Funny, I noticed the same thing when I look around on fotolog.net. I'm a camgirl of course. Cept I'm a guy. But then, all pretty girls on the net are really dudes, right?

My mother's incredibly stupid ex-husband
"I can't believe I have waited this long to start this thread. My mother used to be married to a man named Chris. He wasn't bright. And he demonstrated this on a regular basis, doing many, many stupid things. This is the thread where Matos remembers those stupid things, and shares them with the group. " - from Luku! this site is so awesome: "The next day, he and Mike, this guy who lived down the hall and regularly beat his wife and stepson, went out to the apartment parking lot to wash the car, this time sans soap. I said, "Can I help you guys?" "No," said Chris. "That's all right. Washing a car is a man's job!" And he and Mike high-fived."

"The first two discs of The Singing Detective's three-DVD set contain the entirety of the six-part, seven-hour 1986 BBC miniseries, with optional commentary by director Jon Amiel. But the series' legion of cultists will likely head straight for the third disc, which features a small sampling of interviews with late screenwriter Dennis Potter, as well as a 45-minute BBC biography that explores the connections between Potter's life and more than 30 years worth of his BBC teleplays." I'm so glad this is out on dvd. I've been waiting to watch this since 1990 I think, when I first read about it.

Women in the Director's Chair- a second chance!
"For six days, twelve powerful programs drawn from the 135 films in this year's festival will re-screen as part of the special Encore Festival (see the complete line-up at www.widc.org). The onset of war in the opening days of the 22nd Festival had a tremendous negative impact: attendance was down by over 70%, and WIDC, a non-profit organization, lost over $20,000. In addition, scores of outstanding films and videos from around the world played to nearly empty theaters, as many Chicagoans were glued to the news, gathering with family and friends, or engaged in anti-war activities. Without the Encore, the festival may go down in history as the best film festival that (almost) no one saw! Women in the Director's Chair, its staff, volunteers, filmmakers, artists and co-sponsoring organizations throughout Chicago, refuse to let that happen."

earl dittman, whore.
Poor Chow Yun Fat. The commercial for Bullet Proof Monk had quotes from only one critic, gushing about how great the movie was. It was Earl Dittman, of "Wireless Magazines" who writes things like, ”Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley (in Serving Sara) make an irresistible screen team in this sexy, zany and over the top road movie that breaks all the rules!". And "Along Came a Spider is "a tightly woven cinematic web of intrigue and suspense... An intense and riveting psychological thriller that will keep you glued to your seat!" My rule is if "Earl Dittman" is anywhere on the poster blurbs or in the tv commercials, I'm skipping it.

dame darcy
i could not beLIEVE it when i flipped to blind date last night & there was dame darcy. at first i thought maybe it was just someone who looks a lot like her & likes to dress super fancy & act strangely, but then it said darcy on the screen. it was totally awesome, she even wore her mermaid outfit in the hot tub & said she could only speak mermese while in the water. mermese consists of some trilling noises. she also made a big point of talking about her witchcraft. -pam

He's a designer or something and he threw a dinner party to celebrate the color pink. TO CELEBRATE THE COLOR PINK. Pam kept clapping everytime Cowie put something together (like pink feathers in a vase) and saying, "I WANT THAT!" He was amazing. Pink fuzzy cozy covers for the bottom of coctail glasses? Cowie is a very tanned white guy with some vague Euro accent we couldn't figure out and comes off sort of like...maybe if James Bond was gay and was in the same biz as Martha Stewart? Superstar!

Wow, Charlie Finch calls Art Superstar (that's a technical term right?)Matthew (Mrs. Bjork) Barney a hack. With all the news about steroids in major league baseball, I thought this was a good interview. Funny photos. T: Do you think you motivate people? GV: No, I think I disgust people. A kind of new David Sedaris story. I always forget to check this site cause Esquire usually sucks overall but then I find a new Sedaris story which is always nice. This one is especially good I thought.

rock rules
A letter from a record exec to the Waxwings yelling at them for not being rockstar-ish enough at the club before their record release show that I was at. From Syd who was there as well. Pretty funny and a good primer on how to be a rockstar. "Mick Jagger wouldn't be hangin' out in the club before HIS RECORD RELEASE show!Make a fuckin' statement!!!...Dean, you're just fuckin' hangin' out by the fuckin' entrance before the show, AND SOMETIMES ALONE! PATHETIC!!"

Byung-Hyun Kim
From Jamie, a (yes, sports article) about that Korean pitcher who gave up runs in the World Series. Remember him? How sad he looked? He's ok now and you can read about it. He's a really good sleeper and Mark Grace is still smoking cigs. Sometimes I forget sports writing can be done well.

klaus kinski
why do people treat you strangely if you admit to ever having privately used a picture of klaus kinski? i just finished watching "my best fiend" & cannot believe anyone had anything to do with him, ever. i haven't seen a lot of his movies, maybe just "crawlspace" when i was a kid. terrifying. you should be him for halloween. -pam

www.lunchboxes.com
Dan, who sent me this link, likes the Misfits and Iron Maiden lunchboxes. But they also have Jurassic Park 3! I hated Jurassic Park 1 & 2 and for some reason loved part 3. I think I was the only one and now I've told you all my secret. I guess I'll just take my lunchbox and sit alone to eat my lunch.

God of Fruits
Has anyone tried the durian? I wonder if I would like it or be repulsed by it? I started thinking of it again because there's a deleted scene in the In the Mood For Love dvd and Tony Leung is chowing down on one and he looks like he likes it. If you ever had one, let me know how it was.

steve madden
I was once at a shoe store with ida-red and she pointed out a shoe by Steve Madden and said that they were good for relatively cheap shoes. And then I started seeing ads everywhere with his name. It's like that right? Once something is pointed out you see it everywhere. Like orange clothes a few Summers back. Anyway, he's in the slammer. That would make a good OZ story.

cheese guy
artnet.com says: "Cosimo Cavallaro is a Montreal-born artist who moved to New York City when he was 14 years old. At present, he has a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Cavallero is probably best known for slathering a New York hotel room with cheese back in 1999, bed, floor lamps and all. After that, he pumped 1,000 pounds of pepperjack cheese all over a frame house in Powel, Wyo., covering it inside and out, complete with furniture." And this is his website.

Ye Ye Girls
"Think of the 1960s, back when pop music had only just begun. An explosion of youth, optimism and the breaking down of musical boundaries. The first generation of teenagers in search of a soundtrack to their new freedom. New artists became pop stars, riding high on a tidal wave of energy. Imagine the French, inspired by the sounds coming out of the US and UK, taking ideas from the great girl-groups, the beat-groups and combining it with the best of the French chanteuse traditions... The result became known as the ye-ye sound; classic pop songs with a French twist." ---link from Tom2.
