Now that we entered the abdominal region in our course of Gross Anatomy, we also learned about dangerous things that can happen to the abdomen (in addition to the neck region).
Now I have a new question.
Why do people vomit blood when they get stabbed in the abdomen? I understand that it would bleed a lot if you get stabbed there because there's the liver, which had a lot of blood vessels associated with it. But why does blood travel upwards through esophagus and come out of mouth? Is there a mechanism to it, or is it just the Hollywood tricks to make the death of major villan look cool?
Do you think the professor would think me as insane if I asked? ^_^;;;

Finally the second gross anatomy test is over (it was yesterday, but I was lazy to update my blog yesterday. =P). I was supposed to stay at school after classes and study for the biochem quiz on Thursday, but I just came home and slept. Not that I don't want to do well, but I needed that downtime (since I didn't sleep that much yetserday - my manga order came yesterday and of course I had to read all of them yesterday).
For people who are still wondering,
The place for the most efficient assasination (by knife or a sharp object) is right behind the clavicle. There are tons of structure including major blood vessels that can be hurt if that area is injured. While studying in a group the mornig of the exam (the exam started at 12:30pm), we were also talking how ineffective sliting your writs in transverse manner. =P
You need to know what can be hurt to be able to not hurt them, right? ^_^;;
oh, K-san, I don't think Clamp did any pulsating eyes (the tiny blood vessels in the eyes would pulsate to your heart beat like the arteries of which you take the pulse) yet... They are more into severed stuff.... ^_^;;

oh, and we also learned where in the neck region to stab to kill someone most efficiently. But I haven't reviewed that lecture yet. I'll let you know when I do.

I want to see a pulsating eye!!!
Yes, it's that time of week again, the weekend before the big exam! (Gross anatomy this time. All about head and neck. Everything. Repeat. Everything.)
The technical way to get a pulsating eye is as follows (you can all skip this part. No one's probably interested in the mechanism and all that... It's just for a poor, anatomy-books-are-my-only-friends med student's own amusement....):
If you rupture the internal carotid atery inside the carotid sheath inside the skull (in the medial plane on the level a little above the eyes), you might also rupture the cavernous sinus, which drains from ophthalmic vein (the vein from the eye). In that case, there occurs blood-mixing, and the vein to the eye gets the blood from heart!
Consequently, the pulsating eye!
I really want to see one. Wouldn't it be cool?
yeah, yeah, I know... you all are probably thinking I'm insane. I got such a reaction even from my classmate when I expressed my interest in a pulsating eye. But, hey, I need something to keep me amused, else I'll really go insane. I've been at school from 9am to 12pm for a couple of days in a row now. I got back just an hour ago today... and there's still so much to learn before the exam on Monday...

Medical School is Fun Wednesday, October 9, 2002 04:26 a.m.
yeah. Really. It's all in the mnemonics that the students use to keep us somewhat sane in the midst of all the information pouring out at us.
"Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle."
What does this mean? Why, it's for the names of the carpal bones on the hand! (this is a bit old since we finished hand and upper arms last month)
"Some Say Money Matters But My Brother Says Big Brains (Boobs if you want PG version) Matter Most."
Here's for the nature of each of the 12 Cranial Nerves! (S for sensory, M for motor, and B for both)
The climax is in the mnemonics for the names of 12 Cranial Nerves, though.
"Oh, Oh, Oh, To Touch And Feel Very Green Veggies, Ah, Heaven."
This seems innocent enough, right? This is not the original. Very Green Veggies and Ah, Heaven turn into a series of words that I think I shouldn't post on the web. ^_^;;;;
Well, anything that will keep me remember all those names and whatnot. I wasn't a believer of mnemonics before, but now I'll all for them. Anything that makes this bottomless fit filled with things that we should know (which is everything about everything) a little easier to navigate.

I got a new cell phone! ^O^
It's small, folderly(?), and silver! =D (But I didn't pay the ridiculously high price that they put up here. I bought my plan and phone in a Korean verizon wireless store, and I paied a little less than 1/4 of this price with two year contract.)
Now, how do I put this new strap through this small hole?

Saturday, September 28, 2002 08:29 p.m.
Finally watched "Spirited Away"!
They actually opened it in NJ at select theaters. There was one theater near NJ kinokuniya playing Spirited Away, so Te-chan and I went today to see it.
The movie was great. The dubbing wasn't bad at all (although I'm sure that they changed the dialogue here and there... grrr). The scenery was especially beautiful. One thing that I'm disappointed is, why isn't there more to it? I wanna know more about what happened while Chihiro's working in the bathhouse, and what happened after the movie's story was over!!! I want more~~~~~~~~
I guess that's what Fanfic is for, but it's so hard to find a good fanfic in fanfiction.net.... (K-san, you need to write more!!! (I really liked the first fic, btw, and now I can finally go to all the areas in your Sen to Chihiro page!!)

Two-hour break Tuesday, September 17, 2002 07:26 p.m.
..after taking my first exam today (oh, I had numerous quizes so far, but it was the first "exam"). Came back home around 5pm (earlier than usual, yay!), and took a short nap and then just mopped around for two hours as a post-exam reward. Now I'm all ready to go study for Gross Anatomy exam (an all-day one lasting from 11am to 5pm) next Monday! (yeah, right.)
Life just gets better and better as I have two weeks of downtime with only two biochem quizes and one biostat exam before another biochem exam and another GA (gross anatomy) exam the next week. Then, we have a week without any quizes (yay~~~~) before having two exams the next week. It doesn't get any better afterwards, but I'm not capable of thinking beyond.....
Anyhow, I'm done with one exam. whew. It wasn't too bad and I felt that I was prepared for it, but we'll see what the score says. I'm very scared of GA exam next week, though. I haven't been keeping up with all the materials that we've learned, and I have so little time........ (but it's only been a month!!! *wails*)
So, yeah, that's basically my life now. Exam after exam after exam... I'll be SO happy when Thanksgiving break comes because that's when I'll be done with GA (if I'm lucky. I just found out that if we get below 70, 1. Retake the tests over the summer if grade is 65~70; 2. Take a summer anatomy course if grade is 60~65; 3. Retake the course next year if grade is below 60. Ugh. I don't wanna do any of them, and that means I should do nothing else but study this week (but I already wasted two hours today!!! Eeeeeeek!!!)
oh, there's a book about the first year anatomy course in NJMS out there. It's called "Body of Knowledge" by Steve Giegerich. My local library had it, so I borrowed it and of course I skimmed through it instead of studying for biochem on Sunday night. It's interesting. There are a few factors that have been changed since (it was about the class of 2002, and they used to have GA with physiology in the second semester. Now we have anatomy in the first sem and physiology in the second sem), but all the prof's mentioned there are still our prof's. =)
The part about the anatomy exam scared me, though.....
---------------------------------------------
I had a nightmare yesterday. I was held hostage and/or kidnapped by someone, and he tried to shoot me with a gun. My hands were tied to something, but somehow I managed to untie myself when he was away for a while and did something to the gun so that it would backfire when the trigger was pulled. He came back and shot me but it backfired and I tried to hold the gun above his chest while he was shooting me, so he got shot several times. Then I ran away but when I turned around, he was running after me!!! Apparently, the gunshot didn't do much damage.
I was terrified, but at the same time, I was thinking, 'he must haven't been hurt because all the bullets hit the sternum (the plate-like bone in the middle of the chest) and didn't damage any of the internal organs! (the gun didn't move sideways much when it was being fired)' -_-;;;;;;;
I don't know if it's possible, though......
---------------------------------------------
On the brighter note, Kingdom Hearts is coming out tomorrow!!!! Weee~ I really wanna see Cloud.... They gave him a new outfit with one devil wing. The other devil wing belong to Sepiroth... What does that mean? O.o Also, they said that they put something to explain the relationship between Aerith and Cloud more (Not that I'm interested in that.. I didn't really like Aerith). I won't be able to play it, but I'll buy it tomorrow. Just to keep me company while I try to learn as much about upper torso and upper limb anatomy as possible. =)

Saturday, August 31, 2002 03:53 p.m.
No, no, no, Mei-chan!! He didn't die!
They performed a surgery on him to take the arrow out (opening up the chest was involved), but he was fine because there wasn't blood wellig in the sac where the heart sits because of the arrow tip. (that was a long sentence... ^_^;;;) That's why it's very important not to pull out when someone gets stabbed by something (knife, stake, etc...), also because more tissues can be hurt in the pulling out process. (you all probably know this already, but... =)) Makes you wonder about all those anime characters who so bravely pull out arrows and knives, no? ^_^

The Things you Learn in Anatomy.. Thursday, August 29, 2002 12:49 a.m.
Look(?) what I learned in today's anatomy class concerning the radiographic study of the thorax!
The prof. (retired surgeon), after showing us a picture of a man with an arrow stuck on his chest, told us that Sherlock Holmes was based on an English surgeon! (whose name I forgot). =D
Mei-chan, I thought of you when I heard that. (Although you may already know this...) =)
Why did he mention Sherlock Holmes? He said that we should use our deductive skill to figure out what's wrong with that guy with the arrow. Because, in this case, you couldn't really see what was injured from outside.
This guy attempted suicide by firing an arrow onto his chest, but it remarkably missed all the vital parts. It got stuck inbetween chambers of the heart, but the arrow tip worked as a cork, sort-of. So he just walked around with an arrow stuck on his chest until he got to the hospital. -_-;;

Saturday, August 24, 2002 06:00 p.m.
My first week in med school passed without any special trouble. I can't believe it's only been a week! I feel like I have been at school for at least a month.
I meet new people in class, and introduce myself and get introduced, and then I think, "Wow, I still don't know this person... wait, it's only been 4 days and there are 170 people in my class...."
Since I'm at school all day from 9am to 5:30pm-ish, it feels like it's been a long time.
The classes are not too bad.
The biostatics part of public health course is pretty easy since I took Statistics AP in my high school with a good teacher and had chem classes with stat components at collage.
Biochem is a bit boring since we're studying the same stuff that I learned in my biochem class and a couple of bio classes taken at Wellesley. I'm realizing again that Prof. Wolfson (my biochem prof at Wellesley) was really good. Thanks to her, I do retain some knowledge that I learned last semester. =)
And there's the Gross Anatomy class. The actual anatomy part doesn't seem too bad, but the developmental anatomy is new to me. The material doesn't seem too hard in terms of comprehension, but there's just too much to learn in a short period of time. According to the director of Gross Anatomy, we should have no personal life except studying during the first semester of the first year.... -_-;;; The scary part is, the upperclass people agree (although not to that extreme. We might have time for one afternoon and evening off (like Friday) and time for one or two extracurricular activities and one TV show, it seems.)
But overall, it's fine so far. The anatomy lab was fine and interesting, too. We didn't have anyone fainting or anything, and I didn't really feel emotionally burdened, either. One thing is just the smell. It's awfull and makes my eyes water. =(
The actual lab isn't too hard (except our kadaver is too skinny, so it's rather hard to separate muscles), but I feel really tired at the end of the day (we have labs everyday except Friday). I think I can survive, though. =)
---------------------------
I finally unwarpped and watched the Vampire Hunter D DVD that I bought a couple of weeks ago. It was still good. The voices were tolerable. I think I got desensitized by all those awful voices in TV anime shows. The scenery was as beautiful as ever (and not as dark as when we saw in theater), and I still like Meier Link a lot. =D
One thing that I found funny was, when D first appeared in front of the Markus brothers, the music and the way he appeared made me feel like I should get up and cheer for the appearance of "The Hero". heh. =P
I also played a bit of Persona 2 and Grandia (the first one). Both have dubbed voices here and there, and they are actually pretty good! Where did all these people go when they made FF10 voiceover?

Te-chan, Yoshimoto Watanabe is the mangaka of Fun Fun Factory, not Skip Beat! ^_^ Just wanted to clarify....
Fun Fun Factory IS fun. =P I got the first two volumes and am anxiously waiting for the third one. It's out in Japanese, but not in Korean, and since the second one just came out in Korean, I think I have a long waiting before me. sigh...
On the brighter(?) side, God Child second volume came out in Korean. Woohoo!! =D
Tomorrow is my first day at Med School (orientation doesn't really count.).. I'm a little anxious about the Gross Anatomy lab. I've seen dead bodies being disected before, but I've never done it myself. Hopefully, I'll survive.... and not remember any ghost stories involving med schools while and after that lab....

Quick update before I go and get ready to go to school...
We had "The White Coat Ceremony" yesterday. It's basically an entrance ceremony that was initiated only 9 years ago. We got to recite the Hippocrates' Oath and got a brand new white coat (it's shorter than the one that REAL doctors wear, though). =D
The speeches were interesting and not too long. They were inspirational. =)
I got two pairs of scrubs, too. Will be wearing them in the Anatomy lab and make them permanantly smell like the preservative (no formaldehyde, though). ^_^;;;
Today's my last day for orientation!! Will be getting syllabi.... need to buy books.....
********************************************************
updates! Monday, August 12, 2002 10:10 p.m.
Things have happened, but I've been lazy to write on blog... =P
The orientation to NJMS started today. Was there from 9am to 6pm... Need adjustment back into the life of regularity....
It wasn't as boring as I expected it to be, even though there were a lot of talks about things like financial aids and such... People were friendly. =)
Started playing "Persona 2" on my old PS. I've played about 4 hours so far.. It's interesting. It has this jazzy sassy feeling, which reminds me a little of Cowboy Bebop. The story is intriguing (Two separated worlds are being merged as one refuses to forget what happened.... Kinda like Chrono Cross?), the battle style is unique (you can contact the demons that you fight to negotiate and get items or make contracts with them. Also, you use "Persona" to cast magic spells and such), and the characters are interesting. It just takes longer to play since you don't always have to fight the battles. If you end up making the demon happy and get an item, you don't get experience points.
Went to see "Spy Kids 2". I know, I know.. but I was out with a friend, and there's nothing out that I would really like to see. It turned out to be pretty fun. Lots of gadgets and such. Kinda like a kid version of new James Bond movies without the adults' romance. =)
Anyhow, I saw a preview of the second Harry Potter movie there!! ^0^
They all look cute~~~~~
Bought Lord of the Rings DVD, and found out that there's another special edition coming out in November.
I saw a preview of what's going to be inside that special edition, and I'm so buying one!!!
They added lots of new scenes that we didn't see in the movie!!! I can't remember exactly which scenes, but the scenes that were in the books, but not in the movie. They look good!!! It's going to be a 4 DVD set. It comes with a special case that looks like a book cover. We all should buy it. =D
That's about all I can think now.... oh, my brother also got "Devil May Cry" game for PS2 recently. Looks cool. The final boss was ridiculously easy, though. Needs more fight-controlling skill than Vagrant story, though. Kinda like "The Bouncer", I guess.

Thursday, August 1, 2002 03:20 p.m.
Spirited Away!! Yay!!! Finally!!!!
The problem is.... are there going to be any theater in NJ that show this movie? ;_;
I might have to trek up to NYC..................

Thursday, July 25, 2002 07:55 p.m.
I got a brand-new silver camry today!!!! *squeal*
Now I can properly call my car "Sess-chan"~ ^_^ (My old car was dark blue, which doesn't exactly fit snow-imaged Sesshoumaru...)
Shoujocon was much fun. =D
The cosplayers were aplenty. Te-chan was kakkoi as Dark and Mei-chan was cute as Wakaba. I'm sad that I didn't get to see your Nadesico outfit, Mei-chan! I want pictures!!
Dealers' Room was great. I got Miyu and Yui figurines and a Kyo keyring among other things. ^0^ I only attended one of the panels, but there were many other interesting panels/discussion/workshops.
Now I want to go to other conventions. =D
----------------------------
I finally got a DSL connection at home!!! ^0^
It's not as fast as cable, but it's still faster than dial-up connection. I think we'll stick to DSL because my dad says that it would be a pain to take the cable up to the second floor, due to the layout of the house (my house is very old....).
Have been spending much time on neopets after getting DSL connection, but that should go down now that I had a fast connection for a couple of days. ^_^;;;;
Still wanna see Sen to Chihiro movie!!!!!!

Thursday, July 11, 2002 04:15 p.m.
Just came back from dentist's after getting two wisdom teeth pulled out. The dentist was really good and pulled both of them in about 5 min, but now my left cheek is swollen like a frog... -_-;;;
----------------------------
I have made my decision about the school. I'll be attending New Jersey Medical School starting August 12th. I still feel somewhat for Tufts, but I had to notify them of my decision by July 11th, and I did. Well, the decision was made after much consideration, and now I'll not look back on it.
BTW, Kitsu, so what are you dressing up as? I need to go to Yaohan and see if they have any cheap pink kimono/yukata.... then I can just dress up as Misha from PitaTen, but if not.... I have no idea.....
Oh! I watched "The Sign of Four" yesterday. With Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, of course.
I love Holmes' smirk. heh.
Currently Playing:
Tales of Destiny.
Played for 20 hours, got a sort of an ending with all the characters going their separate ways. Said "That's it? After only 20 hours? With no explanations on characters' background?" Then realized that it was not an ending. The story goes on..... -_-;;;

Gamble! Thursday, July 4, 2002 11:44 p.m.
Went to Atlantic City today with family friend(s?).
Did slot for about an hour and a half.
Made $110 profit! ^0^
It was fun, but it sucked for my brother because they got rid of that arcade for a new buffet, so he had to walk outside (in melting heat!!!) for quite a bit.
Me? I stayed inside and did slot. =P

Dilemma! Wednesday, June 26, 2002 10:04 p.m.
I got into Tufts University School of Medicine!!!! ^O^
I just checked my email today and there is was, the acceptance email! I would have been much happier and more excited about it if I heard this news before I graduated, though.....
I'm still excited. I want to live in Boston and Tufts gave me a good impression when I visited there. However, I have a rather confused(?) feeling about this because I wasn't really expecting to hear from Tufts. People have been telling me that the acceptance from a waitlist could come really late like late August or even on the first day of school. So, I set my mind on attending New Jersey Medical School. But now.....
One big factor in my dilemma is the cost of attendance. Tufts costs more than twice as much as NJMS. Besides, if I decide to attend Tufts, I would have to find a place to live, which will also cost lots of money considering the price range of Boston houses....
So I don't know......... I don't know which medical school would be better for me in terms of education, either....... Help? ^_^;;;;

Te-chan! Ganbare in looking for a job! I'm sure that you'll find something that you like to do. You're only one year out of college. If you want to change your field later, you still have plenty of time, so don't be afraid to go for whatever you want!!!
I sometimes envy the situations of people who are not going onto another school after college. Sure, I don't really have to worry about what kind of job to do, but on the other hand, I'm a little worried about "what if I don't like it?" Med school is a bit too big of a commitment (sp? -_-;;;;) in terms of money and time to just turn back... But! I shouldn't be pessimistic!!! =)
Kitsu! Congrats and Good Luck on your new job! Also good luck for house searching! =D
Oh, yeah... and good luck in living for a month w/o TV and Computer! =P
Now that I'm not going to Europe, I wanna go to Disney World, too~~~~ It's not likely to happen this summer, though. At least I get to go to Atlantic City on July 4th, and to ShoujoCon. =D
Mei-chan, your mentioning of World War I reminds me of a manga that I read recently. It's a korean one that I've been wanting to read for quite a while. It was so good~~~~~
The backgraound was at the end of the Napoleon War rather than World War I, though. It revolves around a German aristocrat family with three sons. The eldest went to war at 17, but was shot while running away from the battle. The second son was still at the military school (two years until graduation). It's kinda hard to summarize the story, but it mainly deals with the psychological effect of the fact that the eldest son died a shameful death on the whole family. The mother went a bit hysterical and pessimistic at her son's death. The father still loves his wife and family dearly, so he tries to bring the family back together. The second son (who seems to be the main character - it's hard to tell since we get to see what's going on with all the family members) is going through this puberty with the images of his father and the older brother as "his heros" crumbling down. As we all know, Napoleon came back briefly from his exile at Elba (sp?). So the second son, now graduated from the military academy, goes to war as well as his father (who was retired). The mother, who was regaining her health when her husband decided to stay by her side after their eldest son's death, completely breaks down. The second son gets killed at the battle while he repeats to himself, "I'll never run away. Never. Because I am the hero of my father and my younger brother."
In the end, the mother dies after giving birth to a dead baby. I'm not sure what happened to the father, but it seems that either he committed suicide by drinking poision, or he also died of despair. The youngest son leaves his family's castle to stay with his grandparents and to attend a military academy like his father and brothers. When he's leaveing, he sees his brother (the second son)'s ghost by one of the castle's window and promises that he'll be back. His castle always remains with the sounds of winds, which he interpretes as the sounds of dead people (his parents and his brothers) coming back and waiting for him.
Heh. That was a loooooong summary (almost a rant. =P). I really really like this series. The mangaka supposedly planned the story running from year 1814 to 1994, but she only published the above story (titled "1815" for the year that this happend) and another one about a bit later (which I haven't read so I have no idea what it's about... the stories of this series - called "song series" - are intertwined, but not about just one family or just one nation). Anyhow, I love the mangaka's telling of the characters' minds in this series. She's actually one of my fav. korean mangaka. I think her "Land of Wind" (roughly translated...) is translated in Chinese as well....
As you can probably tell, I've been reading varioud mangas these days by driving for about 30 min/one way to a book rental store. ^_^;;
Among what I borrowed today...
"Tojin Yashiki" by Hatsu Akiko.
She usually writes about youkais and such living in antiques. Her stories are interesting.
"Kodomo no Taion" by Yoshinaga Fumi. She's the mangaka of the "Antique Cake Shop" that was made into a J-drama. I haven't read the Antique Cake Shop, yet, but this short story collection was very good. Heart Warming and all. =D
ok. I stop now and go to sleep. oh, and if anyone has MSN messanger, put me in! I'll be on MSN more than ICQ (I don't really go on ICQ anymore... -_-;;;). You can just use my hotmail addy. =)

Kkyuoo.......
*trying to rearrange the room and build a hutch for the desk*
For those who haven't heard, I'll be living at home at least for the first year of the med school. It's almost definite that I'll be attending New Jersey Medical School starting August 12th. I haven't heard from Tufts yet, and there's the tuition..... Tufts' tuition is more than twice of NJMS' tuition... -_-;;;;
My brother and I are also trying to get a cable connection at home, so we'll see about that.....
Oh, and I'll not be traveling to Europe, so I'm definitely going to Shoujocon. =D
Was thinking of dressing up as Shia from Pitaten in her pink kimono outfit, but we'll see what happens... Gave up making anything. Will drop by Yahoan at some point and see how much those cotton kimonos are. If too expensive, might buy a pattern for western-imaged kimono (which doesn't really look like kimono, but more like a robe with flowing sleeves... -_-;;;) and make one myself.
Korea lost to Germany in World Cup semifinal, but that's ok. They already did a great job in World Cup this year. =D

Celebration!!!!! Saturday, June 22, 2002 10:57 a.m.
KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
South Korea advanced to the semifinals in World Cup!!!!!!! They just won against Spain by shootout today!!!!!!!!!!
This is amazing considering that South Korea never won beyond the selection for the round of sixteen in the World Cup. Now they are proceeding to the semifinals!!!!!!
The players of Korean team were so good, too!! I mean, there must have been some home advantage like being familiar to the weather and the ground and stuff, but the players were GOOD. They showed very good performance against all their opponents such as Italy and Spain.
I'm so proud of them, and I'm proud to be Korean. =D

Saturday, May 25, 2002 08:00 a.m.
OMG!!! There's Sherlock Holmes animation!!!!
It's on 7:30am on Sat. apparently... I found it out by accident because I was up early to prepare for Montreal trip. (=D)
It's set in a future complete with a woman detective driving a frying car and all... The weird thing is, all the other people seem to be wearing Holmes' perioud English clothes (at least the trench coat...), but the detective is wearing typical futuristic suit thing. And Watson is wearing a glove-type thingie on both arms.....
The story is not original at all. Today's episode was Blue Carbuncle with similar dialogue (at least at the key detection works). The difference was that the blue carbuncle was a blue carbuncle DOLL, which was made with special intelligence or something (with special computer chip... -_-;;) by the guy who stole the jewel in the original story.
And the original culprit was actully being chased by Prof. Moriati = the ultimate evil in the series..... -_-;;
I don't know what to think. Holmes and Watson don't look bad, but the story is like an alternate universe fanfiction with no originality in crime solving........
