Still surviving...
Tuesday, June 26, 2001
08:18 a.m.

From Congly's State of the Union: "In a few words...I'm surviving ^^."

E-mail response from a certain someone: "Oh not voted out of the Chemistry lab yet by your group members with burning bunsen burners?"

Bwahahaha ^^;;; Not quite yet...give it a little time mind you.

Tomorrow is the big pancake breakfast here...pancakes, sausage, watermelon, and a vice of mine...bacon. Mmmmm...obviously, no entry tomorrow (morning at least)...and probably no work will get done in any lab until 10 AM, when it ends.

Thanks to Kristina and Tin for their help with my hunts for a pillow book. I'll keep that in mind...when I get around to it, I'll buy the two volume hardcover edition. However, it actually isn't at the top of my list...the Genji monogatari is :).
Perhaps one day, I'll gather up the courage and the time to tackle the other book by the author of Musashi (which is a really long one...not as long as "Tales of the 1001 Days and 1001 Nights" (Arabian Nights) )

This weather here is rather annoying. It looks cold and rainy...then becomes hot. It's really hot in the day...rains at night. On Saturday, I headed out in the morning...and it was cold and rainy. In the afternoon, wearing the same stuff, it was too hot -_-.

Anything else to really say? Ah...may be I'll catch up on the e-mail I've been meaning to compose to people (which is so far behind it isn't even funny -.-)

Hunting for a Pillow Book
Saturday, June 23, 2001
11:33 a.m.

Indeed, I just spent the last 10 minutes hunting for a pillow book that meets my needs and tastes. I think I've found the one I'm looking for.

This next part is directed in the direction of Tin and Kristina [hope that's right] (indirectly). I was looking on Abebooks.com and I found people selling the 1967 Morris edition (in two volumes) for $45 US (used). A bit pricey, but I suppose I could live with that. However, I also saw a little lower on the page, a paperback version from 1967 containing the same number of pages as the recent edition from Colombia Press (which published the hardcover version). Is there in fact at all a difference between the editions (if you've compared the two versions ^^;;;)...because from what I'm seeing, there may not be...and that'd be very good from my POV ^^.

Non-productive week
Saturday, June 23, 2001
11:11 a.m.

This week wasn't as productive as I would have liked to have been. Monday was soccer, Tuesday was pool party, Wednesday I was tired, Thursday was movies on TV ^^;;;; (I'm regretting it now) {I was watching "Shawshank Redemption" until I realised that "Mortal Kombat" was also on...I really have to see that movie all the way through one of these days. Campy, and utterly amusing ^^;;;}...Eight weeks to go from today....

I did see that "Mists of Avalon" will be coming to TBS later in July...also heard that "L'arc en ciel" is doing the ED to the FF movie.

Oi oi...I'm so behind on the e-mail I want to write...BTW, on that point ^^;;; if on the off chance Tin you've sent any e-mail my direction, my server must have eaten it -_-;;. (and if you haven't...don't worry about it :)

Evil plans in motion. Still waiting to hear about the results of Stage 1. Stage 2 & 3 will immediately follow {evil laughter} [side note...yeah, it's taped...I don't quite have the mad scientist laugh yet...it must be a 4th year seminar]

Just preparing to order "Genji monogatori" for myself...I'm getting the Seidensticker edition, unabridged of course. I've read the Waley edition, but everyone I've heard from say that the Seidensticker edition is far superiour.

Toasty o.o;;

Yesterday...first day of summer. It's been the warmest in a while....31.4 C (though I was inside most of the day ^^;;). Today, I *gasp* actually just wore a t-shirt to work (with jeans, to clarify for those with vivid imaginations...no, I'm not paying for your therapy for using your imagination :P) It was nice...though it was hot and sticky in the house :/

It's amazing...it's difficult to hear the phone in my house. Got a few calls for the guy that moved out (kind of)...including one that I thought was for me (sounded like the person). Ironically, a little later, that person called and we had a little conversation (interupted a few times ;)

What else to really say...not too much, though I must say it's nice to be anonomous every so often. On a particular message board, I've been using my standard handle, and almost no one knows who I am (the owner and I think two other people). Not having the things associated with your name attached to the persona is refreshing. It's a change of pace from the normal operations ^^;

Inbox cleaning time...

Just dumping URLs from my inbox into here...so I can clean up my Inbox. Damn web based accounts that delete e-mail on me >_<

I forgot that I also really hate the term 'snag'...as in 'snag a guy/man'...I was only reminded of this recently ^^;;;;;

Bits of news here and there
Thursday, June 21, 2001
07:44 a.m.

This entry consists of all of the little bits and pieces of news that I have, but haven't quite posted yet.

Saturday...my Walkman headphones bit the dust. The left earbud doesn't work anymore :(...it works with fidgeting, but then it stops working. I looked to try and find a replacement Walkman, but they don't have rechargable batteries with the Walkman, unlike my model...I might just get a new pair of headphones, or upgrade the Walkman and buy rechargable ones...but that'll increase the cost a fair bit.

Let's see...I saw Moulin Rouge on Sunday with a couple of other people. Luhrman did a great job in capturing the Bohemian ideals in his direction. The singing was okay, and the choice of modern songs fit in well ^^; I'm a sucker for musicals with tragic love stories ^^;;;;; {don't read anything into that :P}

Ah...I passed my radiation safety course...so now, I can work with radioisotopes country wide...fun fun? (I treat the radioisotopes with extreme caution...keeping it as far away from me as I can). It's doable, but a little scary. Perhaps with more experience, the fear factor will drop.

Fear Factor. Hmmm...what people will do for money -_-;; Only saw the first part of the first episode where they dragged the people in mud by horses.

Saw the "You Don't Know Jack" game show on ABC yesterday...Paul Reubens (him of Pee Wee Herman, and other such 'fame') did a good job in his character as host...a bit insane, a bit mean). Have to love the $2 000 000 question...where conveniently, the clock runs down to about $200 before the question is finally read. Also, the elimination round...where concentration is required, and some loud sounds will always occur...only wish they had the 'screws' and that you lose money for wrong answers.

Should have seen this coming...

08:17 a.m.

I was channel surfing on Monday I think...and I saw a headline flash across the headline news network (Cdn). This week is Pride Week (I wasn't entirely sure until I saw the Bravo ad, and this morning, I saw a poster up on the stop light that I pass). Back home...some guy decided it'd be a good idea to have "Heterosexual Pride Day." on Monday. Upon hearing this way back when...the initial reaction was of groaning and headshaking knowing what this actually was the facade for. The news headline you may ask? "Heterosexual Pride Day turns into gay bashing". I'm not surprised...the organiser is a strict strict strict religious individual (but also an idiot in my opinion--he ran for mayor, and finished dead last...I think he wanted to run all non heterosexual people out of town, not that he actually could as mayor) -_-.

Surprisingly, after Monday's soccer game, I wasn't stiff at all. Perhaps it's because I didn't run too hard...or that I stretched out very well. It was nice ^^. (though my knee is still not at 100%).

Yesterday was the summer student pool party ^^. Lots of fun, the pizza was good, and to make it even better, it was free ^_^.

Tin: Thanks for doing the preliminary research ^^. I'll take a good look at the material, and try and come up with something (though I probably won't get to it for a while ^^;;)

A new project?
Monday, June 18, 2001
05:29 p.m.

Tin...if someone is willing to supply the raw material to work with, I'd be happy to do some analysis on the 'blog war' adventure (and yes, I'd toss in some footnotes XD). It'd be an interesting winter project...and fits in with my theme of winter projects that I've been following for a bit now (I was going to write something about "The Fangirl"...but this might be more interesting)

WMC...no e-mail? ;)

Katelynne: Don't feel too bad...I feel the same way too at times -_-.

Performing family duties

09:16 p.m.

Is the reason that I'm at work right now...

Katelynne: I haven't looked up what Oishii means...so it doesn't bother me too much (I'm guessing yummy...but I can deal with that). I think that ripe is worse than yummy actually. Ah yes...linking blogs *coughs once or twice in an embarassed fashion*...

Jackie...don't feel too alone. I got to make a trip to the oral surgeon myself at the beginning of this year. I was functional in a few days...mercifully, I was knocked out through the whole thing...unlike the previous time I was there...where I got to experience interesting sensations (and for the stomachs of readers, I won't describe them here).

Got a lot of exercise today...also played two rounds of DDR ^_^. I hate "Let them move"...'cause the song is bad. I tried a few others that I hadn't played. One of them was rated 4...but wasn't 4. It was so very slow, and easy...may be about 2.5 at best. Couldn't beat "Put your Faith in Me" at Advanced level...damn footwork with the half beats...and it isn't that that difficult. Sigh -_-.

Perhaps I'll actually get around to writing people e-mail ^^;; A few have priority...one has significant priority...and of course, one knows that will always be the really long one. ^^;;

I'm gone...time to actually go home.

Non connected thoughts somehow presented as a coherent package

A random potporri of comments with no real rhyme or reason. This seems to be like many of my entries (don't do a statistical analysis mind you...I don't want to know the answer :P)

First up...directed at Kristi whose comment was at Ryuuen. If I recall correctly, milk (probably more exactly lactose) intolerance can occur at older ages (especially among Europeans?). I can't remember for certain, but I thought I read that the majority of people become lactose intolerant as they get older. A fairly large percentage I believe...when I saw the stat, I looked at it in disbelief. I don't have the book with me, but I can tell you that it was "Lehninger's Principles of Biochemistry 3rd Ed" and look up lactose. Good book, didn't like the class the book was for -_-.

A new term I hate. As a good few of you know...I can't stand the term "yummy" applied to things other than food. I involuntarily shudder when I see people described as "yummy"...or more commently, in my travels, "yummy bish(onen)" -_-. The new term is "ripe". On a list I'm on...one guy is very fond of Hotaru, and keeps posting URLs of her in bikini's (older form)...and always says that he'd like her when she's ripe. {"She'll be ripe when she's an older teenager"} A bit of objectification here...I think of a fruit that will be eaten (and no, I'm not thinking about using the word 'eat' in the slangy regard)...and it just seems wrong @.@. I wonder what exactly he's referring to when he uses the term ripe (though I can make a pretty good educated guess -.-. I'd be tempted to say a bit more on this term in regards to the particulars of the relationship that comes into my mind...but I'd much rather not think about it o.o;

I've come to realise that the propogation of blogs is kind of like virii. Easiest way is to describe is with an example. Let's say that I link to A's blog...and so read it. A has linked to his/her friends B, C, D. I peek at D's blog, am interested, and link to that. Reading D's blog, I see person E who looks to be articulate...and the process goes on (both ways). It's a very tangled web here, obviously. There was a recent paper in Science talking about how computer virii follow a similar pattern to that of real life virii. That'd be an interesting paper to read...just haven't quite gotten around to it yet o.o;

No new original content from me...just responses. Skip the post if you aren't mentioned (my suggestion):

Venkarel: From a while back: you were working on your thematic paper. Hope it turned out well. Thematics and characterisation were always my favourite topics to write about. I liked thematics especially since I managed to find themes everywhere (personal favourite: "appearance vs. reality") ^o^

Jackie: Hope you can knock some sense into your hosting company -_-. An absolute pain I'd imagine. Good luck with your summer session. Don't feel too bad about limited net access...I know exactly how you feel. Nice layout for the blog mind you. :)

Kourin: Well written discussion in your last entry. I found myself nodding and agreeing with you fully on that (more on the disappearing of people out of life). I used to be very close to a number of people in high school...but we've all went our separate ways. Now, this is somewhat understandable, as most of us went to separate universities. However, even with my friends on the same campus (and it's not a very big one)...I don't see them at all O_o. I was the only one of the group to really go into the natural sciences proper...everyone else went to engineering or CS...and I think one went into admin, the other two the humanities. You've already heard one of my rants about this Kourin though...so I won't repeat it again ;)

Katelynne: I'm reading your blog...I just don't usually really reply to blogs too too often. I'm in the process of working on an e-mail to you, but I've got two e-mails in front of it ^^;; (one short, the other longer). I was going to ask about your new job, but I figured it out. My friend in RL would really love a job like yours; she's a bibliophile.

Tin: Congrats on finding your keys. Will your apartment ever be the same after "Scrubdown '01" occured? ^^;;

Side note...my left knee really hurts...I think I bruised it or something :/. Dish washing though only took 10 minutes to do yesterday :D. However, I really really hate the loud pumping bass that some cars have. If I can hear it a block a way, it's too (explitive deleted) bloody loud. >_<

Ohhhh...I feel it all throughout my body...down all the way to my toes

I'm still feeling the pains of Monday's soccer games (3 and a bit hours)...I was going to make a big long entry into here...but pitas was done during the time I was going to do so ^^;;; Not much else to say though...except that dish washing is taking a long time to do (at home). I can't believe how many dishes two others can come up with. Monday...it took me almost an hour to do the dishes {growl}...yesterday, a bit better; 30 minutes. One of the roommates is gone for a while, so the dish level should be a lot better.

{title change 6/13/01--SC}

Perhaps a big entry...perhaps not

I'm all too aware that this is probably a crappy title for an entry...but so be it =P (I'd bet on the latter myself ^^;)

Right now...I'm waiting until 6 PM when I start refereeing soccer. It has several advantages in that I get a little power trip, get paid, and get exercise. I'm sure that with my luck, I'll have to deal with my ~favourite~ team tonight -_-. (Those who received my summer summary last year probably know all about it...I think I may even have it online somewhere...but I'm not sure about that. Hopefully, it'll be fun ^)^.

Yesterday, I took a nice walk in the afternoon. I found an SW episode 1 poster for $1...so I bought it. If I don't want it, and Boy doesn't want it...I'm sure I'll find a good use for it somewhere (as it has both Obi and Kwai Gon (sp) on it... {sweattrains at a particular reference he remembers}. I went to the arcade and finally gave in and tried DDR 3rd Mix. It was...different than DDR USA. Firstly, if you screw up, you lose and don't get to finish the song. Secondly, the announcer actually tells you off throughout (well, he told me off). I chose the Non-stop mode...as it offered 4 songs, instead of 3 for Medium and Soft. I thought I could choose songs in this non-stop mode...I was wrong -_-. However, they did have a Smile.dk selection set...so I chose to dance to it. First song...Butterfly. I barely made it through that one...somehow I did (I don't know the difficulty actually -_-; I'm looking it up in another window). Second song...Mr. Wonderful...made it about a minute and a bit through before failing. However...I realised that I ~really~ like Smile.dk's music (at least the 3 songs I've heard now (Boys, Mr. Wonderful and Butterfly), so I'll very likely be buying a CD of theirs. ^^;;;;;;; I can just imagine S-san rolling her eyes now in disgust, as she hates this style of music. Perhaps I'll have to get you to listen to a ~special~ mix designed just for you S-san XD.

After looking...I think the mode was Another for Butterfly. There were half steps in there...and I couldn't find that in Basic. Hence, I beat a 6 foot song o.o;;;;

Today...I got taken out for lunch along with my de facto supervisor for helping someone out with his presentation. We went to an Italian restaurant a couple of blocks away (close to my house). Wow! It was good ^_^. They provided us with fresh bread and a mix of I think some sour wine and olive oil on a plate...mmmm. I ordered a lasagna, as I like that...(cheap pasta on Mondays and Tuesdays also...)...it was really really good. It's better than the last one I had from Boston Pizza, and that was pretty good too. The sauce was a bit sour this time...and it added to my enjoyment greatly.

When I made the title...I initially had a little bit of a discussion...almost a free talk in mind. However, I don't think I'll do it today. Tomorrow perhaps (dealing with being anonomous)
