From Kourin's log:
"* Anime fans are scary. (Well, I knew this already, but it was yet again reinforced at Expo.)
* Yaoi fangirls are scary. (Yet another reinforced realization.)"
Almost getting to the truism category Kourin ^^;; {hands Kourin a plushie or two}
Venkarel: Turkish delights are very good ^_^. They are a jelly like candy, covered with chocolate. I think you can buy them in the store under "Big Turk" (bar)...yummy ^^.
Katelynne...gomen ^^;;; (working on replying to your e-mail...kind of ^^;)
Quote from part of an e-mail exchange with WMC (no...I'm not going to comment on what led to this ^^;;;)
WMC Damn Tamahome... IU'll distract him with Miaka. *SMILES*
Me That'd probably work well...just make sure to
appropriately attire Miaka...yes, danger pay is awarded.
WMC Regardless of what she waears it's makes no difference, he's seen her naked, and still wants her. Bleh. Stupid male.

Title topic has to deal with a personal e-mail I'm composing at this point in time.
More information than some care to know (directed towards Tin)
Indeed...a bit of a description of the male 'hydrolyic pump system'...and how 'throbbing manhood' is an appropriate term. IIRC, it's 99% females who read this blog anyhow...so this either may be a new lesson...or not. (that is for those who care). Anyhow...I think I've wasted enough time with a disclaimer.
Basically, what happens is that the penial arteries dialate (that is become bigger) allowing for more blood flow to go through. The penial veins constrict, greatly hindering blood from escaping the region. With fluid entering and not escaping, it then follows that the penis will enlarge and become turgid. Blood is continually pumped into the penis, as that's what keeps the turgidity. It is this pumping action of blood by the heart that accounts for the throbbing. Hence, and so forth, the term is accurate.
Sorry Tin...no diagrams.
Back to the regularly scheduled entry
Yesterday, I went out to see some Shakespeare (Love's Labour Lost). It was pretty good, although the tent was hyper hot. Without shorts, I would have died. This conveniently leads me to the next point...in that it's been the first time in almost a year that I've worn shorts. ^^;; Part of the reason are that: a) I'm a bit modest ^^;;; {yeah...go figure ^^;;;}, b) I didn't have a pair that really fit until Saturday, c) I try to avoid too much exposure to the sun and d) wearing shorts in a lab is not what I consider prudent. Played a round of DDR after finishing up in the lab (gasp, I was wearing shorts at that time...bad bad ;) )...I think I'm now at the 5 foot level almost entirely. There's only a couple of songs I haven't danced to and passed at 5 feet. Now...the 6 foot level and beyond o.o;; Bought a Slurpie yesterday, as it was so hot (in the evening). It was a bit too liquidy for my liking...not a great one.
Old news...last Tuesday, I went out to celebrate two of the summer students' birthdays. We went to Moxies...where the margaritas were cheap that day. The strawberry one I had was actually quite good...though I wasn't able to really mix it that well (I think the alcohol sank to the bottom o.o;;).
I think that sums almost everything up no da...

{sweatdrop} And your e-mail addy is tin@radical-drag.net?
No...there won't be graphics ^^;; thankfully, the scanner doesn't work here, so I have an excuse XD. Ah yes...the use of the term 'weeping' works IMHO...it's just on a more metaphorical level.
The parental visit was fine...parents fed me, bought food, and paid for some things :) {technical edits--7/16/01--SC}
The terminology is accurate Tin...

I would have put this in private e-mail, but I couldn't find your e-mail kicking around anywhere (and the archives disappeared, intentionally, or not?) It's too late in the day to come up with the exact scientific explaination, but think...what causes the turgidity...blood. The heart pulses so hence...
I might fill in the explaination sometime...or not. ^^;;

Again, the title topic follows my convention for these types of posts.
It came to my mind during the discussion during last Friday's gathering of a number of the summer students that we all have to be insane in some way, shape or form. How else does one explain the fact that we subject ourselves to a science based future. I think about all the chemicals and reagents I'm exposed to (have been exposed to)...and just thinking about what I've worked with again further supports my assertation.
It seems to be a general trend that a large number of science students are sure exactly what to do with their life after they've completed their BSc. Not many people are going into graduate school directly; a large number either hit the work force, or look at professional schools like dentistry, optomitry, etc.
I think that a factor influencing people to enter into the sciences is the high prospect of employment once they're done, as compared to a degree like a BA or something like that. There only comes the realisation...a little later...that really, a BSc doesn't cut it. That is, if you want a good job, a BSc isn't enough. MSc isn't really enough either (in these days and ages) You really need to go to the "Doctor of Philosophy" stage (which equals PhD ne WMC :P) to have a cut.
I hear about all the problems in the sciences...about once you've got a PhD, that's only the start of your magnificant journey. You've then got to post-doc at all the right places, so you can advance your career. Yep...that means starving for a while longer. Funding...that's another adventure in itself. Publish or perish...that's the way the game goes (as far as I can see it).
I know that I fall into this boat (of not knowing what exactly I want to do) as well...which means that next year (or so), I get to spend hours soul-searching, researching, etc. to figure out exactly how I want to spent the rest of my life. It'll be one of the DECISIONS of life...the life defining ones. It isn't something to really look forward to...but I'll have to face it when it comes. I want something interesting, that I'll love...but I also want to live comfortably. I'm not sure if these two wants are reconcilable at this point in time ^^;;
I'm not sure how many readers of this humble log have indeed walked the path of the natural sciences. I know Priya has...and Venkarel and Jackie [kind of] (but not exactly natural sciences for the latter two)...then again, I'm not entirely sure who reads this thing anymore ^^;; Thus, I'm not sure how relevant this blathering is to anyone...sigh...specialisation means that fewer and fewer people are around that can understand (or care to understand ;) what you're talking about.
[edited 7/13/01--SC] Side point...in the dumb f*** department: an idiot got kicked out of Big Brother 2 for being violent, threatening, attempting to force himself sexually upon a woman, and nearly killing an intoxicated woman (that is putting a kitchen knife to her throat while kissing her). He then has the audacity to claim he doesn't know why he got kicked out. Gah...a ~brilliant~ example of the male sex here >_<...brings shame on all of us :( Again, I say dumb f***. I should note that the guy may have some psychological problems that they didn't really make clear...but that would be poor screening on the shows' part. {I was watching, as I was eating supper}.
Managed to clean up the house ^^;;; I had fun dancing to a few MKR songs while doing that (on the kicking stereo system)...especially "Girls Be Proud" (I like that song :) )
Past stories may follow in the next entry (such as going out for dinner on Tuesday)...parents are up today (not sure if Boy is coming...we'll see). At lunch...the group attacks the East Indian food buffet XD
No news and no freetalk makes Stephen's blog go something something.

Title topic is an allusion to a Simpsons' parody of "The Shining".
I do have a bit of news, and a few stories to tell...but alas, I haven't been having the time to really do anything. I haven't also had time to really read through blogs...though I've peeked at the usual suspects :)
After reading Tin's last entry...I can see that my freetalk won't be anywhere as interesting as hers...hmmm...
Anyhow...since I have to run home early (since I have to clean as my parents are coming up tomorrow o.o;;)...I don't have too much to say at this point in time. However...Janaki...a Nascar only network >_< Yuck...I'm not a big fan of Nascar...(and the computer game isn't that fun, unless you're invulnerable, and go around crashing every car out...even then, its too long)*...Indy is a lot more interesting to me (as Formula One doesn't really have lead changes too often).
So very far behind in e-mail, and readings...oi oi. I'll work on catching up somewhat...I hope.
*I see that I've gone on a tangent here haven't I ^^;;

As promised...a bit of explaination and a story. The title topic from Saturday had to deal with feeling the nice sun and cool breeze on me Friday morning. Now...I should admit that I did get to feel the elements for a while on the previous Monday, and on Saturday...but it wasn't as nice as it was Friday. The power went out...so, that means no work could be done...power was restored at 12 PM...so the lab took an extended lunch break :) Very enjoyable...had a nice lunch.
In the evening, a number of the summer students headed out to the Boston's Pizza just a couple of blocks from where I live (I think we got 10 to show). I ordered their "Non-stop iced tea" and their special dessert titled (unfortunately?!) "Hugs & Kisses". Yeah...some of the people at the table had a field day with that title ^^; It consisted of cheesecake layered with chocolate brownie...yum ^_^. After getting home, my roommate rented the Ms. Congeniality DVD...not too bad...not the most intellectual of course though ;)
Saturday...stopped by the library and did a bit of shopping. I saw that the arcade knocked down the price for playing DDR 3rd Mix to $1...and it turned out 4 songs, instead of 3. I'll probably be playing that more than DDR USA (because I like the 3rd Mix songs a bit better)...though I still haven't found all of the songs...they must be in "Soft" mode o.o; I did manage to come close to an S rating (missing one step) twice, and got an S on some song titled Da something or other.
It's too hot for my liking right about now...this week, we're scheduled to hit 30 C every day (86 F for those who use that sort of scale -_-.)
Looks like Project B will be a go...I'll probably get around to starting Stage 2 and 3 of Project C very soon...or I'll wait until I get back home. I'm not entirely sure yet.
So exactly ~what~ kind of scientist [in training] do they think I am?!

I got a e-mail inviting me to join a Yahoo group called:
theevolutiondeceit
Now...I figured that this was a list dealing with not so nice things (use your imagination here...and you'll be pretty close to what I was thinking, given an unsolicited e-mail). I went to the homepage and saw:
" The greatest fraud in the history of science is unveiled...
Many people think that Darwin's Theory of Evolution is a proven fact. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, recent developments in science completely disprove the theory."
Now...this is sent to me...someone who staunchly supports evolution (I won't bore the readers of this humble blog with why evolution can be considered fact while the mechanism is theoretical). Yes, decent with modification has flaws...it's not perfect, but it's the best theory in existance. If a better one that solves all of the issues comes along, I'll happily switch theories. Yes...this is a particular issue of interest to me...I even got on "_Science_ Online" with a post dealing with this :).
You know...it's tempting to join the list and troll XD...although it wouldn't be nice ^^;
On feeling human again

Title topic refers to feeling the sun and wind of the midday on my tired weary body...there's a story behind this, which I'll probably describe on Monday. *gasp* There might even be a long freetalk (v.3)...not entirely decided yet.
For those AIM users...I have an ID there now ^^;; ID is 'darkfacimile' (sans single quotes)...just like my ICQ ID. Don't know how frequently I'll peek at it this summer, but you never know :) (can't use it at work though...due to the firewall). When I get back, one will be more likely to find me.
I can't believe that I didn't mention this...but I've finished up all of the minor character pages on AnC for Neophytes. Come and be scared at http://congly.freeservers.com/anime/anc/characters/ XD. Major characters will be in progress this weekend...I really hope.
So very hot and sticky -_-

08:19 a.m.
The temperature yesterday was really high...I missed the extent of it as I was inside for most of the day, but we cracked 37 C (close to 100 F). At home last night was pretty bad...it was hot and sticky and rather uncomfortable to work in. I'm highly considering getting a little fan for my room.
On the good news front, I'm getting closer to paying for the Ayashi no Ceres manga that I'm getting...I'll be doing fairly well cost wise I think ^^.
Jackie...it's nice to see that your domains are now stable again. That inspires me for the perfect gift for Congly Christmas V ^_- [I'm not sure how many of the readers know about this tradition, but on one ML, I write a little list of gifts for the members (that come to my mind)...I did it on one FY list...but I didn't have a listing last year as I was behind ^^;;]
Katelynne: *sniggers at her topic reading* Just for you, I'll use that topic sometime ;) (I will probably have to paraphrase Jackie's Touga & fangirl exchange...as it would fit quite well into your topic idea).
Oh ho ho...my evil plans are starting to fall into place. What I realised this morning is that I can title them A, B and C and they are appropriately named XD.
I'll probably go out tonight with some of the other summer students...not sure exactly what the plans are though (should check the other e-mail account ^^;)

The title topic has nothing to do with this entry; I just liked the sound of it :).
Let's see...interesting news is that Weiss Kreuz is now commercial, to be distributed by Media Blasters. I know that a few people will be annoyed at that point. I only watched the first 7 episodes...but it didn't really grab a hold of me...{shrugs}.
I managed to deal with one of the issues (not bad) this weekend (surprising even myself) that had been kicking around in my life...but I'm not talking about it. Those who should know, know...sorry ^^;
Played some DDR 3rd Mix on Monday, as it was a day off. Found a number of tokens in the arcade, so I got 2 games for $1.50 CDN (only 3 songs...which is normal, but gahh...-_-). Butterfly Upswing is rather fun, though quite quick. (4), Mr. Wonderful was okay (4) [incidently...the Butterfly I beat the last time I played 3rd Mix is only 5...it wasn't Upswing]. I played some other 5 foot Eurotrash song...which was fun. Boom Boom Dollar (5) was not good...at least the dance steps were bad especially the repeated up arrows at the end :/ (passed it though).
My new roommate moved in bringing a nice 27 inch TV ^^ as well as a few other toys. He seems to be nice and quiet so it should be good.
WMC: I'm moving up the evil ranking am I? That's quite mild I think XD.

Random quotes (from WMC):
"You mean you just weren';t thinking. Bah. Typical male :P"
"Poor Stephen, even the computers disses you."
"Nope. There's a much unpublishized Murphy's Law; If you're name is Stephen, you can never be right." -_-;
"Yep, the female is always right, even when she is wrong :)" (and the worst part is...I know this rule already ^^;;)
Me: "If you can't have fun at what you do...=P"
WMC: "So says the porno star. :P What are you a fluffer?"
Me: (smart answer mode): "Nah...that's next year's promotion. Right now...I'm in charge of the mop and keeping the floor clean :P"
I'll be explictly clear here...I'm JOKING with this exchange.

Well...long weekend...so I get Monday off...I'll probably have to stop tomorrow & Monday to see if the plants have enough water though.

Tinkering around with design
Saturday, June 30, 2001
01:05 p.m.
Just spent about 15 minutes tinkering around with the design. If someone else can come up with a better colour scheme, I'm all ears :P. (Katelynne...I like the browny colour myself...slight change of shade through from its original colour) I thought of doing a white text, black background in the first table section, and then gradually shifting to black text and white in the last one...but that middle transition frame is a little too difficult to think of right about now ^^;;
^^;;; I slept in today...much longer than I was expecting...so I'm here in the lab now...instead of at 10 AM when I probably should have been -_-; Running off to finish my experiment right after I finish typing this up.
I don't expect to be around tomorrow (famous last words ;) so to any Canadians reading this...a happy Canada Day to all of you (one day in advance) :) Remember...Canada is the only country to have successfully burnt down the White House ^_-
So many bits of miscellany

08:00 a.m.
Another hodge podge of points made here ^^;.
First of all...I surprised myself by beating Afronova on DDR (just 5 feet). Not a flawless performance of course, but a clear was quite warmly received.
Nextly...last Saturday, I found a treasure at the used bookstore: a book of 15 sonatas; I think 4 by Hayden (including the one in D Major I was working on ^_-), 4 by Mozart, and the rest by Beethoven (including Moonlight, Pathetique and Appo...(something or other)...which I had actually been looking for). The cost for me: $1 CDN ^__^. I was toying with buying the book of Chopin preludes et études for $3.50...but I passed...right now at least ;)
Gah...I can't get the tracker to work...I've installed it correctly, but it keeps giving me a Javascript error when I reload the page :( (same one you are using Kourin & WMC).
Ah yes...what I was meaning to say. The provincial government came reasonably close to falling which would have in turn sent us to an election. For those not familiar with the Canadian parlimentary system, how it works is that there is a government and opposition. If the government loses a vote involving money issues, then a vote of 'non-confidence' must be held (as if you can't get budgets through, you can't run the government). The opposition did a bit of a scheme where their members excused themselves from engagements, and their parking spots were empty (turns out they parked a block or two away). The government seeing not many opposition members had some of its own take off. At the time for the vote, all of the opposition showed up...and so the government lost 22 to 29 (I think the government has 31 seats). Some department or another can't operate right now as it has no money coming towards it. Remember...if you're government, ~always~ have enough members to defeat a motion/pass your bill...happened already federally this year...and it caused a collapse of the federal government back in the early eighties.
Let's see...what else in the news. A guy is sent to jail for botching a castration job. It's significant since the guy was a chef who had no medical training. I think after the botched job (and the patient was rushed to hospital due to massive bleeding), the chef tried to sell the testicles on the street >_<
The pancake breakfast went quite well...I enjoyed my eating greatly ^__^. Mmm...fresh bacon (such a nice treat).
Tin...interesting perspective I must say. Not the ethos I follow mind you ^^;;. However, I can see some slight similarity in that I always joke (I'm hoping at least) about having to be dragged out of the lab kicking and screaming by the significant other (if applicable). ^^;;;; I know I'll be somewhat bad, but I don't want to be that bad...and I don't want to subject my family (again, if applicable) to my work... :/
Minor accomplishments
Thursday, June 28, 2001
08:17 a.m.
The pancake breakfast went very well...I enjoyed myself...and the fresh bacon (sorry for any vegetarians/vegans out there) was really really good (a rare treat).
Minor accomplishments: I managed to beat Boys on Advanced in DDR (4 feet)...which is a lot more fun to dance to than the 3 feet version. I also surprised myself by beating "Dynamite Rave" twice (5 feet). It's actually quite slow ^^;; (in comparision to "End of the Century" that I usually dance to earlier in the program). We're starting to move to the 5 and 6 foot stage...which isn't too bad at all :)
Working on e-mail...not doing very well at it...stay tuned ^^;
Just did a quick blog redesign...it turned out much better than I would have thought (I like that greeny colour). Now...if I could find a nicer colour than that blue I've been using...I'd be pleased.
