X collages are like potato chips: you can't just have one.

Series: X
Character(s): Fuuma and Kamui
Song/Title: "Rain King" by Counting Crows
Blurb: This was originally intended to be a self-indulgent collage. You know, an excuse to have Wet Fuuma on my desktop. Then it somehow became an enormous monster that took days to complete, although most of that was trying to find an appropriate picture of Kamui and then trying to find an appropriate song. The song call is a little bizarre, but it was the best I could do. Most of the rain songs out there seem to be either sappy love songs or angsty love songs. Who in this collage is the Rain King? Your guess is as good as mine.

I should be arrested for abusing the clone tool.

I am addicted to this song.

Just cooked dinner. George bought some sort of crazy pseudo-instant Yaki-Soba, where you just stir-fry the noodles, add vegetables, and add some kind of powdered sauce that becomes liquid when it comes into contact with heat or something. It was pretty good.

While I was eating, my dad called.

"I'll be eating at my client's house tonight," he said.

"Okay."

"Is George home?" he queried.

"Yes."

"All right. Maybe you two can fix something for dinner."

"Okay."

Then he hung up and I finished my bowl of Yaki-Soba.

I want to blog, but I really have nothing to say. Since school has started, my life has been awfully boring.

It drizzled last night, apparently. And this morning everyone woke up to a fantastic world where the greens were greener, the rain having dusted off the trees and bushes and grass. The sun was rising and shading pinks into the clouds and spilling gold on the sidewalks and driveways and patios. It was gorgeous.

AP Biology has become sort of a daily terror for many of us. Every day we basically sit there and listen to Dr. Jang rant and threaten and name names and generally imply that we're all idiots who would drop AP Biology if we can't handle it. The class has become hugely competitive; many of us are friends, but when it comes to staying in the class, boy, it's everyone for his or herself. I cannot afford to be cut. I don't have enough classes as it is.

I may get to learn a string instrument. I'm Mr. Edo's TA in fourth period, which is Orchestra A. There are quite a few holes because of class conflicts and I've been terrorizing Mr. Edo for years to get him to let me learn an instrument. I'd prefer bass or cello, but violin would be easier because I'm used to reading treble clef. Either way, it'd be terribly neat. I've explored the world of brass, now it's time for me to explore the world of strings. Next would be woodwind, but that would be in college and I may have no money. ^^

There's yet another new freshman in the mellophones, Kristine. She just doesn't seem to be Getting It, although today I had her watch the band march drill and now I think she sees what she's supposed to do. Today was mostly teaching her to buzz; on Monday I hope to help her march a little bit more. She's going to be an alternate, but it's good to make her work a little.

Yeah, my life is dull. It's always been dull, but now it's duller than normal. At least I haven't had much homework yet.

Then, read this: ML parody.

Enjoy.

And now, Adventures in Networking!

I recently learned how to network computers, so I've set up the office. I networked my father's computer and his old computer so that he could transfer all his data. And since I'm all bored and everything, I decided set myself to figuring out the problem why some of the computers on the network aren't accessible. Namely, George's laptop and my dad's computer. They can look into our files (our being myself and the secretary), but we can't seem to look at their shared files at all.

After some pondering, I suddenly remembered that my dad uses the Sygate Personal Firewall. Well, that might be the problem. I turned to George and asked him, "Are you firewalled, by any chance?" And he said yes, he uses the Sygate Personal Firewall. No surprise. He probably recommended it to my dad.

So George disabled the firewall, and now I can look at his shared files. Funny how that works.

I'm sure you're all just dying to hear about my first day of school. Ha ha. Well, you're going to hear about it anyway.

Zero period: Marching band. Same old, same old.

First period: Wind Ensemble. Same old, same old.

Second period: AP Government. Blah blah blah here's a packet blah blah here's some more dead tree blah blah watch a chunk of Amistad. I make it sound very boring, but it was actually kind of interesting. Mr. Hammett is a Really Good Teacher. I could tell this from the very first AP meeting I attended. He just has a way of presenting information that's really. . . cool. I can't define it. At one point he told us, "Don't get caught up in the American definition of freedom, of being able to do what you want when you want, of being able to hold your own opinion. Not all opinions are equal. Some opinions are more equal than others because they are based on fact and reasoning."

Third period: AP Literature. Mrs. Mendez seems really. . . nice. She just seems like a really nice, intelligent lady, just a little overwhelmed by having to teach AP. We have homework already, but nothing major.

Fourth period: I have no fourth period. I'm a TA for Mr. Edo. I get to. . . study! Well, no, I'm sure when things are settled I'll be running around photocopying and stuff. But today I just studied for my AP Biology make-up quiz. I might learn to play cello! Mr. Edo thinks that he'll probably have one cello left over, so then I get to learn cello! Yaaaaaaay.

Lunch: Ms. Monahan got moved to a room in the new building, so I had to go find it. Rachel informed me where it was. I bought a bag of chips to eat, since the Eagle Express isn't open yet and the cafeteria is too far away and the lines are too long. There were very few people in the room (most people were probably unable to find her), so we talked about our summers and stuff.

Fifth period: AP Biology. We took our make-up quizzes today. I was paralyzed with fear; Dr. Jang informed us that anyone who bombed the make-ups would simply be dropped (the class is too large to be effective). I know I was thinking about dropping the class before, but now I know that I can't drop the class, because what would I take? I don't want to have a schedule with only four classes. Not only that, but I hadn't known that I'd be retaking the Icons of Evolution quiz, so I hadn't studied! I somehow made a 4 (I still don't know how I did it). Then I took the chapters 1-4 quiz that I had studied for. I have no idea what I got on that.

People who go to schools that have AP class sizes of under thirty can all blow me, by the way. You know who you are. **envious glare**

Tomorrow I'm going to talk to Mr. Sellers about starting a club. I would have today, but I forgot. ^^;; It was probably for the best; the office was quite hectic today, what with it being the first day of school and all.

Now I go eat my ramen. Then I will do my homework.

So! I have finally finished Fruits Basket. Spoilers forthcoming.

The introductions of the monkey and the goat were very. . . rushed. Both characters basically showed up for one episode and then disappeared. Granted, there wasn't much series left for them to be developed, but really. ^^;; The horse and the rooster didn't show up at all, although I hear the rooster hasn't even been introduced in the manga. Rebecca speculates that Akito is the rooster, but I don't believe that, because--according to the anime--Akito carries "the full weight of the curse," so I don't think he actually turns into any kind of animal.

The scene with Touru at her mother's grave in the rain and Hana and Uo was very cool. Actually, the entire episode with Kyou and his other form was very cool. And the anime seems to imply that Touru has "chosen" Kyo. I'm not sure what to think about that. I don't think it's so, because by Traditional Shoujo Guidelines Touru should be getting with Yuki. But I'm a shounen-ai fan who's just giddy over Shigure/Hatori or Hatori/Shigure, so I'm not really enthusiastic one way or another.

I do not hate Akito. I pity him a lot, but that's about it. It's like how I don't really hate or love Seymour from FFX. Seymour's a nutjob. He's insane. Hating him would be like hating a rabid dog. There's no point to it. It's not the dog's fault it's rabid. I regard Akito in the same way; I pity him because he didn't ask for his fate. He's also a gigantic asshole, but I think part of that is because he has a very short time to live and that tends to make you kind of high-strung and waspish. More character speculation on Akito later.

And now Siean is waiting patiently to play Morrowind some more, so I'm going to go away now.

Pros and cons to upgrading to Windows XP:

Pros:

My music collection sounds twice as good as it did before.
Everything is. . . colorful and shiny. . .
Better multilanguage support
Faster

Cons:

It seems to have destroyed Norton Auto-Protect
Annoying little word bubble things (can those be disabled?)
Windows Explorer merged with My Computer (well, this may not be a con)

Anyway, I'm really fascinated by how all of my mp3s are now louder and richer. But when George gets back, I'm going to stomp on his head and make him fix Norton. Having XP does me no good if everything is eaten by viruses the next day.

Look ma, a collage!

Series: Hikaru no Go
Character(s): Everyone from when Hikaru becomes an insei
Title/Song: "A Dream Like Mine" by Bruce Cockburn
Blurb: I thought "Mephistopheles" was easy? This collage took me about half an hour, and half of that was just trying out different filters to see what they looked like. ^^; This is, BTW, my biggest collage to date. I have no idea why it's so huge. The filters, probably.
Link: http://coloredink.shike.org/images/dreamlikemine.jpg

I also made a grayscale version because I thought it looked kind of cool. It's also a slightly smaller file size. http://coloredink.shike.org/images/dreamlikeminebw.jpg

This is going to be some writer-ish rambling; just me trying to get some of my thoughts in order. Feel free to ignore this entirely.

I've been writing altogether too much of my roleplaying world lately. It's nice that I've been so inspired, but I feel like I'm neglecting other things. Like my novel. True, I could probably turn my roleplaying world into a novel now--it's certainly developed enough--but that would require me to come up with an actual plot.

I need to write some more of Keiji and Jesse. I haven't written them in far too long. The problem is, there's really nothing to do with them. They're together, they're happy, they have sex occasionally. There's no conflict in their life. I could place some conflict there, I guess, but I don't know what that could be. I suppose I could get around to writing an NC-17 version of "Strawberries and Liquor," but that makes me uncomfortable. ^^;; I feel like I'm writing about a family member. Yech!

Alicia is showing more promise in terms of writing material. The other night I thought that maybe it's finally time for her to move on and this time I'll give her an actual developed significant other (in other words, he won't die before I actually get a chance to give him a personality). Rachel suggested someone similar to Jun, but I don't see Alicia dating anyone that would remind her of her former fiancé. She knows that wouldn't be fair to him or herself.

I need to write more about Tony too, but right now I'm at something of a loss. The problem with trying to follow Ray Bradbury's footsteps is that, well, Ray Bradbury's a much better author and writer than I am or probably ever will be. I did learn, though, that the way he wrote The Martian Chronicles was by picking a random noun and working from there. I may do that and hopefully come up with some more Tony snippets. Time for five hundred words a day again.

If anyone wants any of their original fiction up at my site, feel free to ask me. Just don't flood me with all three hundred pages of your novel or anything, since it is Raine's server and Raine's bandwidth, and she's allowing me to put up my site there for free. ^^

I saw Blast at UCLA today! I am now going to attempt to describe it in terms of how it made me feel, the mood and effect it created, rather than something linear and easy to understand. Because, you know, that would be too easy. And no fun at all.

Darkness. First there was darkness, light patterns on the wall like ancient moss. Then there was light, and color. All the colors of the rainbow, red orange yellow green blue violet.

And they danced, oh how they danced! It was art and poetry and jazz, ballet and ballroom and modern. Horns flashing in the stagelights, silver and then gold, music pouring out like water and then like heat, cool and then like lava.

There was sorrow then, the loss of a loved one. The music mourned and cried, laments sounding themselves through the instruments. Above it all, one lone musician, weeping through his trumpet like a helpless angel. It was beautiful and terrible and sad, a dead unicorn, a dying hope.

And once we were plunged into a primevil jungle and through the mists of time. Tick tock tick tock tick tock only darkness and the movement of the clock hands. Tick tock tick tock tick tock. And then, in the distance, the cry of something weird and alien. It called; its cry was returned. It called again, and the reply came again. Over and over, sometimes short and curt, other times long and ululating. It made me think of dinosaurs and other things long lost to the movement of the clock hands. Tick tock tick tock tick tock.

There was a lot more, of course, but I'm tired. And tomorrow, I need to practice my mellophone solo.

Because I am trying to think of more BS for my AP Lit HW, I present to you: anime geekery.

Rachel: What's a good character for "One Headlight"?
Me: One of the Technomancers called Subaru.
Rachel: Hey, that works. Post Rainbow Bridge Subaru.
Me: ? I always thought that was Subaru after Hokuto's death.
Rachel: ? But the song says, "I ain't changed but I know I ain't the same." Doesn't that work more for post-Rainbow Bridge Subaru?
Me: Yeah, well. . . but the thing is, Subaru thinks he's changed, but Seishirou says he hasn't.
Rachel: Oh. Hmmm.
Me: . . . I find it really sad that we're discussing the semantics of anime characters in connection to Wallflower songs.

Rachel: It's really sad that we tell time by what anime we were watching. For instance, seventh and eighth grade was when I watched Slayers.
Me: Sixth grade was when I watched Nadesico.
Rachel: And Kenshin. Sixth and seventh grade were the Kenshin years.
Me: Christ. How long have we been into anime?
Rachel: Since fifth grade. Sailor Moon started it for me; then I got into Ranma.
Me: No wonder we've never had lives.
Rachel: Anime crushed them before they had a chance to develop.
Me: Hell, if we'd never gotten into anime, we might be social right now.
Rachel: . . . eh, being social's no fun.

Winamp just pulled Subaru on "One Headlight." How odd.

And now, at Rachel's behest, I present to you: The Band Legends. I will limit this entry to the two most well-known Band Legends: "Julio Gets a Refill" and "Isn't That Hilarious!," with the side-story "Trent is Oblivious."

The major players:
Mr. Edo (conductor)
Julio (drummer)
Richard (clarinet)
James (trumpet)
Trent (bass clarinet)

---

Julio Gets a Refill

On the way to a competition, the band stopped at a fast food restaurant for lunch. But as the band was loading up, Julio decided to go back and get a refill for his soda.

"Don't go, man," his friends urged. "We're gonna leave!

"Ah, it'll be okay," Julio replied, jauntily sauntering back to the restaurant.

Mr. Edo, noting this, told the bus driver, "Leave."

So Julio came out of the restaurant and saw the busses leave. And he actually ran after the bus, screaming, "WAAAIIT! WAAAAAAAAIIIIT!

Mr. Edo stopped the bus and let him get back on.

It's much funnier with the visuals.

---

Isn't That Hilarious!

After a parade, Trent, Richard, and Julio went to James's house to goof off and fool around and whatnot. Julio and James got into a wrestling match while Richard watched, and inside Trent played video games. Richard, watching the two guys fool around, shook his head and said, "It's only funny until somebody gets hurt. Then it's hilarious!

Next thing you know, Julio somehow breaks his arm. The ambulance is called and Julio is rushed off to the emergency room.

Side-story: Trent is Oblivious

Trent was inside playing video games the entire time. When they got back from the hospital, he asked, "Hey, where were you guys?"

Coming up next, Band Snippets. Not quite famous enough to be Band Legends, but amusing nonetheless.
