Happy fourth of July, ya'll. I spent most of it tromping around the same three blocks of Long Beach with heavy bags.

Linda and I left around 6:45 AM in order to avoid traffic and secure a spot near the front of the registration line. Around 8:30 AM we got our badges and our bags and sat down and leafed through the program a bit. Then Linda queried whether we oughtn't be lining up for Opening Ceremonies, which started at 10:00 AM. I agreed, we made the long, arduous journey over to the Terrace Theater, where we sat on our asses for an hour and a half. Opening Ceremonies started a half hour late, as usual, but while we were waiting we were treated to a violin and cello duet by two very talented young girls who played several selections of anime and video game music. I was surprised by how many of the songs I recognized, although, embarrassingly enough, I failed to recognize the Zelda theme. Bad me.

The Opening Ceremonies was hilarious. Several of the Guests of Honor were unable to make it, so they sent in videos instead. Koichi Mashimo's video consisted mostly of him wandering around his studio asking his staff to say things to the American fans. He kept insisting that it was going to be shown overseas, but it seemed that everyone in his studio doubted it greatly. Tsukasa Hojo did a similar video that started out with him "people-watching"; ie, observing pretty girls in short skirts.

Nobuhiro Watsuki is a very, very cute man. Not cute as in handsome, but cute in that very shy, modest sort of I-think-I'm-a-hack kind of way. He seemed terrified of the enthusiasm of his fans. ^^

Maria Kawamura, the seiyuu who did Naga the White Serpent, treated us to her cackle several times. I had no idea it was possible to hear the "OOOOOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO~!!!" dominatrix laugh so many tmies in one hour and still survive. She really seemed to be enjoying herself. I doubt she got to cackle in front of so many people very often.

Afterwards, Linda and I scampered over to the Exhibit Hall, where we spent many weary hours. I ended up spending way too much money, but I did bring home a shounen ai manga and two Trigun doujinshi. And the Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust DVD! Booya.

After nearly killing ourselves in the Exhibit Hall, we viewed the pieces in the Silent Auction and then tried to find the Artist's Alley. We got lost several times. Linda was trying to find a certain artist because she wanted to buy a certain print, while I was trying to locate Tochi of Strings of Fate fame. I failed, unfortunately, but I will try again tomorrow! And hopefully I will succeed. I also discovered that, apparently, Aimee Major is going to be there, which gave me great glee.

After browsing about a bit, we decided to head for the video theater for Final Fantasy and Hellsing. I was curious about Hellsing, which I'd heard of from numerous sources but never seen (and they were making a big deal of it at AX; the Pioneer Booth had a Hellsing theme), and Linda was interested in seeing Final Fantasy. I thought it was the new Final Fantasy: Unlimited series. I was wrong; it was actually that really dumb one about the crystals. I took the opportunity to nap. Linda eventually dozed off, too.

Hellsing sure as hell woke the both of us up. We spent the entire time home babbling about it. Then we stopped by Orbit and rented all their Hellsing tapes. Because Jesus Christ on a bicycle, Hellsing kicks more ass than I thought humanly possible. Alucard is the most badass character I have seen. Oh. My God. I seriously have no words for this series. Linda and I watched all of one episode and were instantly hooked. We could not get Hellsing out of our heads afterwards.

Anyway, Linda went home to shower and change, and hopefully she'll be spending the night. Then we will watch much Hellsing. Yes. Alucard.

Leaving for AX today.

Time to recite the anime con prayer:

Tomorrow is AnimExpo. I'm in shock. I've been waiting for it all year, and now that it's here. . . I don't know. I'm in shock or something. **squeeeee**

I must now state that I have developed a very sad, pathetic obsession with Ashton Anchors. And a lesser obsession with Dias Flac. And an even lesser obsession than that with Bowman and Ernest. And that I want Precis to handily walk off a cliff. Or get with Leon. I don't care, as long as she's out of my sight.

And I may be developing some kind of fondness for Rena (I have no idea why), because I actually felt a little pained when she thought that Claude was dead after they were shipwrecked on El. Poor girl.

I'm supposed to be going downtown today, but Linda's not calling. NEED STAR OCEAN MANGA. **foams**

Just a friendly little note. ^^ I love ya'll, really I do, but I need to weed my links list a little (I already have, as you can see). So, um, infrequent bloggers might be axed, especially if you blog less than once a month. Just to let you know. Please don't hurt me.

So, I'm going through some of my old stories in an attempt to code them all and upload them for public viewing (gasp!).

It's not going too well, mostly because I keep cringing and thinking, oh my God, this is all crap.

I think I'm going to cry.

I just got back from watching Minority Report. Spoilers blah blah blah.

Overall, I was very impressed with the movie. I'd like to read the original short story by Philip K. Dick and see how it compares to the film.

Plot: Interesting, gripping, and not too predictable. Every time you think you've got the story down, it throws another twist at you. For instance, at one scene I knew that Leo Crow would turn out to be the guy who killed John Anderton's son. But I never even dreamed that Leo Crow was just a pawn! I did, however, predict that Lamar Burgess was going to commit suicide, from the first time that Anderton said, "So, what're you going to do?" Unfortunately, I'm also a little unclear on the plot at some points. The "halos" are never fully explained, and I'm still not sure why Lamar killed Anne Lively. Maybe I just missed something.

Characters/Acting: I don't have any experience in drama, so I can't say anything about acting. I didn't notice anything, so it couldn't have sucked. The characters were likeable enough. I was particularly impressed by how the character of whatshisface--the police guy sent to supervise Precrime--made a reversal halfway through and became a "good guy." Whoever played Lamar Burgess was, IMHO, excellent. Tom Cruise, as usual, was excellent.

Music: I didn't notice it, which means that it wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible and/or intrusive, either. It was very good at enhancing the mood, though. Composer John Williams, if that tells you anything. Same guy who did Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Cinemetography/Filmwork: I was very impressed with the special effects. The little "spiders," especially, were great. I thought they were cute. And intelligent! The magnetic (I presume) cars were also fascinating to watch. The excellent lighting deserves a nod as well.

Miscellaneous: The overall message of "you can choose your own future" is, I feel, one worth remember. This movie made me think, just a little, which is always a great plus. I like movies that make me think. On the way home, Amanda asked me, "Do you believe in psychics?" My initial response was that the precogs weren't psychics; they were, literally, genetic mistakes (whom I felt very sorry for). Then I realized that the question really didn't apply anymore. Whether people can actually "see" the future or not, it doesn't matter, because that's only one of many possible futures. You can always choose.
