watch out, the world's behind you

Sun|08.04

You sleep, you dream. You dream that you meet Callum Rennie in the house you grew up in. He's coming over because a friend of yours knows him and has gotten Mr. Rennie to pay you a visit as a favor and the friend is in the front yard in a sleeping bag for some reason, and you are sleeping in the dream too, because you got tired of waiting, and your brother wakes you up because Callum is here and you realize that you have to change your clothes! What do you wear, to meet Callum Rennie? Nothing is right. You spend a lot of time in your room (it's not really your room, you've never seen it before, but this is your room) and finally put something on and meet him and tell everyone that he is the drummer in your favorite band! He is in your favorite band! (He isn't really, but in the dream he is.) He seems not to like you telling people that. You don't notice. You want him to sign your Headstones CDs. You wonder if he's ever heard The Meteors, you want to play it for him. He's putting up with all of this. For some reason your friend never comes inside, he stays on the front lawn. You feel incredibly grateful to him and wish that he would come inside.

You and Callum go out back, down the hill to the shed, and this is where you live with a coworker. It's kind of like a treehouse, only it isn't, because it's not up a tree. It's a shack. You sit directly across from each other, on the floor, knee to knee, because it's so small, this shack. The coworker comes home and you ask him to leave after telling him, "This is the drummer from my favorite band!"

You notice the face Callum makes, finally you notice this, and look at him directly and say, "I don't know why I keep saying that. Does it bother you?"

"Yes," he says. "Please stop saying it. Introduce me by name. I'm just a regular guy."

His face is weather-worn, his teeth a bit gray. He looks tired. You apologize. You can't seem to stop saying stupid things, you explain to him. You can't seem to stop talking.

The shed slides downhill and you roll your eyes and tell Callum that this always happens, and you stick your arm out, push along the ground, and the shack slides back to where it's supposed to be.
