Running like a mad thing, but getting lots of stuff done! I have one day of work left at each job before C-Day. Our tree is up, and has lights and candy canes (other ornaments will follow tonight or tomorrow). Have all my gifts for fellow Mews purchased now. Family gifts still need an eensy bit of work, as most of them are getting at least one handmade thing along with the store-bought, but there's time yet for those as I won't be making the road trip to MI until Saturday. I still have much package wrapping left to do, although even that won't be as frantic as usual since I don't have to work the day of Christmas eve. Woo! Really, really wish I'd had the money and/or time to do things for a lot of other friends> Mrrf. Well, some of you may be getting your holidays dragged out into January. ^_^;; Will probably be doing lots of social blogging on the 24th; until then, I just wanted to prove I was still alive. Happy (Belated) Birthday, Lunar! I hope your day was good, dip & dessert sounds like more fun than a so-called "normal" dinner anyhow. (Now I feel like a real asshat for not reading blogs while at work; geez, can't believe I missed that. BAD me.) And congrats to Twig on the bonus! Thanks for the good wishes, Thorne. They seem to have worked, too; the co-manager from the store called to ream my supervisor at the PO a new bodily orifice... and having talked to the strong determined MALE managerial type, she buckled. Funny, the polite fax from the female store owner didn't get results, but let a guy with a deep voice and dangly bits call her on the phone, and then all of a sudden they can spare me those two days a week after all? ...growf. It's not that I don't appreciate getting the scheduling conflict dealt with, but I resent the fact that doing so required heavy application of a Y chromosome. **sigh** ...hmm, maybe tomorrow I'll just say "screw it all" and work on a holiday layout of some kind. That'd be good. For now - thudness. Louie went adventuring at 12:22 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2003...and they wonder why people "go postal"... Hating the PO job with huge, hot hate right now. It's not just the usual holiday rush of frantic typing; I've been through that twice already now, and it's practically routine anymore. What has me supremely PO'ed is that this year, they flat-out refuse to make any allowances for the fact that I already have another job. They don't give a damn that they're scheduling me on days I'm supposed to be at the store. They don't give a damn that I may lose my other job (which helps support me for the other 49 weeks of the year) for their 3-week Christmas rush. They could care less that they're removing 20% of the workforce of a small, retail business during *ITS* busiest time of the year. ...a small business which, by the way, ships all its mail-order via the US Postal Service, although they're re-thinking that at the moment. This will not result in me committing any violence. However, it may well cause me to simply hand in my ID badge in the middle of their All Important Busy Season, and telling them exactly what they can do with bale of barbed wire and what is usually considered the exit door of the digestive system. RAR. Louie went adventuring at 10:25 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2003...still the prettiest?!? (**snork!**)
Other recent quizilla results... I came up with "The Hoyden" in the Regency-romance one, and for some inexplicable reason the Village People quiz tells me I am the Indian. Go figure. Mwahahahaha, and our plans to kidnap Twig proceed apace! X D eeeee hee hee hee hee! Louie went adventuring at 10:10 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2003"In blinded mind you are singing a glorious hallelujah..." Before I forget yet again, Happy Belated Birthday to Drakos! (yeesh, I'm so bad about keeping track of things like that. oh well, just think of it as making the big day last longer...? ^_^;;) Chapters 9 and 10 of Duality are spell-checked, poked at slightly, and posted. Even though NaNo is over for this year, Mihai and company are not going to allow themselves to fade into obscurity, so the story will be continuing. (Should I apologize now...?) Since things are already picking up to insane Christmas-card mailing pace at the PO job, though, there probably won't be much more than another chapter or two before the holidays. Okay, now for the threatened convention review of Darkover Grand Council nubmer....whateveritwas. We got out of the house later than planned, but still early enough to reach the convention hotel in decent time. We Mews had decided this year we were taking our kimono and all the relevant accessory bits, and entering the Masquerade. On the drive down, we worked out a funny little skit (soon to be detailed in the Mews blog) - and of course, I was madly scribbling away at my NaNo story. Which meant that Rissi and G-Cat got stuck with all the driving on the way down, which included rain, construction and Beltway traffic. (Domo arigatou gozaimasu, oh wonderful roomies!) Got to the hotel, checked in, unloaded our gear and signed up for the costume contest. Riss went up to the room to start prepping, since Darkover's masquerade is on Friday night, and at this point we had about an hour and a half to get ready. When I got up to the room, we hit Crisis Mode: the iron in our room had plastic burnt onto its plate and was unusable. I ran back down to the lobby where the friends who run the masquerade were sitting at the sign-up table; didn't even make it halfway through the tale of woe before Marty had his room key out and was saying "Take ours." (Yet another reason to adore Marty and his wife Bobbi, as if there weren't quite enough already! ^_^ ) Dashed back up the room, where Riss started ironing like a mad thing and G-Cat and I worked on makeup. In the middle of all this frenzy, my friend Susan (who roomed with us) arrived; as an old hand at costuming, she was unfazed when we dragged her into the frenzy of preparations (that huge box of safety pins was a life-saver). We got ourselves all put together with maybe 15 minutes to spare before the competition was scheduled to begin, and hauled collective fanny off to the 'green room' to be assigned our slot. We were scheduled second to last, out of 9 costumes; at least three of those were lovely examples of workmanship, and I didn't find out until later that one of them was showing only - NOT competing. Competitors then got led like a flock of very strange sheep across to the ballroom, where we found out the tech crew had not bothered to set up sound or mikes yet. D'oh! ("Fan organization" is an oxymoron.) One of the women waiting to watch the masquerade ran back to her room to fetch a CD player, which solved half the problem, and the techies hurried to get at least one of the mikes live. G-Cat spent the wait fussing with her "hoof" gloves, which kept slipping and will need to be redesigned if we want to do this routine again. Then it was on with the show. We had one obligatory cute baby costume, the girl playing Sarah in the "Labyrinth" presentation gave me serious Hair Envy (it was down to her knees, I swear) although I think their lip-synch dragged on a bit too long. Oh, and the "Visiting Professor at Hogwarts" was very well done; I know I'm blanking on a couple of others, but then it was our turn. We got on, started our skit, "the Kitsune's Wish" - had to improvise for a few seconds when the announcer forgot he was supposed to read another line, but got through it intact and got some good laughs for the punchline. After waiting through some photography and the game show planned to buy time for the judges to make their decisions - we got "Best in Show"! O,o Hm, I wonder if this means we have to compete in the "journeyman division" at bigger cons from now on? Must ask friends in the Costumer's Guild. I even managed to attend two panels during the con (voice acting, and Japanese braiding) around my attempts to write. G-Cat did much better in art show sales, courtesy of her lovely engraved glassware, although I did at least cover the cost of my membership so that's not bad at all. Saturday night was given over the the Clam Chowder concert and its attendant fund-raising for Children's Hospital; I helped roam the crowd and collect the donations. (And yes, once again Susan did manage to get the con-goers to cough up enough money to induce the Clams to sing "Bend Over, Greek Sailor".) Midnight Saturday was the annual "Hallelujah Chorus" performance around the indoor swimming pool. (Woo, the tagline was relevant after all!) Sunday morning was our traditional breakfast with Marty & Bobbi, then there was nothing to do but pack up and vacate the hotel room, cruise the dealer's room, and wait until we could reclaim our unsold pieces from the art show before starting the drive back home. Once again I scribbled away in the passenger's seat until the sun set and it got too dark to write; then finally I took my turn driving. ^_^;; Last minor crisis occurred when I booted up my computer again at home and realized I'd lost an entire scene I wrote for Duality late Saturday night. (D'oht!) I still don't think the re-write is quite as good as the original bit was, but whatever. Had my novel verified by the NaNo counters by about 9:30 PM and spent the rest of the night "eep"ing at random intervals because I actually managed to finish the darn thing. Oi. Right, time to stop boring the nice people now... thanks for putting up with the blather! Louie went adventuring at 05:10 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2003Mighty Like a Nasty Llama!!! I think I'm still in shock. Two more completed chapters to post soon, but I need a day or four to decompress... and spell-check the suckers. O,o Congratulations to Twiggins and Ann and Drakos and Tsaiko for also whomping NaNoWriMo, and to Luns for slaying the wild NaNoManGo! Blee. Convention review will follow, after some sleep. Thorne, Luns, I'm sorry we weren't able to work things out to schedule a get-together... and yes, Thorne, I do still have your phone number, but I left my dayplanner at the house. >_< And it turned out our schedule at the show was pretty well insane until this afternoon anyhow. *sigh* Okay, now it's time to go get drunk on candy wine and watch G-Cat smack around her Tactics Timmies! Woot. Louie went adventuring at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2003Setup for fight scene - Taking. For. Bloody. Ever. >_< Shoot me now, please. No, wait, don't shoot me just when the house is starting to smell really really good from roasting turkey. (No, G-Cat -- "turkey", not "turkles," or even "Turks." Bad cat; don't make me kick you in the arster! X D) So we're anxiously awaiting our lovely Rissicat-prepared meal, and trying not to turn into stressbunnies over the convention tomorrow, for which we are (as usual) not quite ready. Stayed up until 3:30 am watching G-Cat play Tactics, trying to teach her main character the Ultima skill, which the bad guys steadfastly refused to cast on him. Difficult gits. I'm thankful for the best roomies in the world, good friends (it would take forever to link you all, but you know who you are!), a sister who loves me in spite of our many differences, and warm purring felines. ^_^ Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving! Louie went adventuring at 02:28 p.m. on Thursday, November 27, 2003Happy Birthday, Catt!!! Have a wonderful day, and may all your fondest birthday wishes come true. ^_^ Word Count: 40,102. Had a fit of inspiration last night courtesy of discussions with G-Cat and got myself all caught up. Seems like an awful lot of talk, though... I think it's time for the bad guys to show up so we can have another fight scene. ^_^;; The sad thing is that even if I manage to make 50,000 words by Sunday -- which I now have hope of managing -- I will still only have gotten through half of the story I wanted to tell. Or maybe a third. Oy. edit: Oh yeah, Chapters 7 & 8 of Duality are now up on my NaNo page. Louie went adventuring at 02:28 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2003All right -- WHO started singing "Let It Snow"?!?!! This is ridiculous. Snow should quite simply *not* be allowed until after Thanksgiving Day - preferably not until Christmas Eve, and even then only enough of a dusting to qualify as a "white Christmas". Rar. On the other hand, w00t! Am signed on now using the new desktop PC, and while it doesn't connect any faster than the old one (still no sign of high-speed access), good gracious but I can tell the difference while loading on the software. O,o Yowza. Oh -- er, yeah... Guess I forgot to mention before this that I was offline for a day or two because my old computer is dying (either the motherboard or hard drive controller card) and I finally got sick of babying it along and jiggling cables and bought a new system. It's very cool, and several exponential factors faster than the old one, and -- though I didn't find this out until I got it home & powered it up -- has LED lights on the exhaust fan. Disco lives, at least on my PC! X D NaNo word count: 38,371. Am going to try to crank out more after my work shift tonight, as I'm still about a day behind due to the computer switch-over. I work tonight, then tomorrow at the store and then I have off from then until the deadline... with the slight exception of a SF convention to attend. Eh heh. I'm still hoping I can finish in time. Have Chapter 7 completed and Chapter 8 almost there, just need to fill in a couple of blank spots and save them as HTML. I SO do not want to drive to work in snow. Blee. Louie went adventuring at 04:08 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2003Just as an FYI, Drakos, a Heath bar is chocolate-covered toffee, for which I am an absolute fiend. Very rich, good stuff, although I have a slight preference for Skor toffee. Mmmmmmm. Louie went adventuring at 03:36 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2003Catching Up Is Hard To Do ...but I'm getting there. Now back to less than one day's word-count behind where I should be on the NaNo project, and once I get through work today the next two days are my 'weekend' for writing. Having checked various random counters on the NaNoWriMo site, I am pathetically behind the Power Writers, and well ahead of many others. Woo - I am Average! (eh heh... like a nasty llama.) Hopefully I can get back ahead of the game again. Also did some splicing together of snippets for Chapters 5 & 6, so by the week's end I may have some more to put up. Big warm fuzzy thank yous go out to Twiggins for the feedback... it helped a lot. A. LOT. I was starting to get discouraged, I think, and you being all enthusiastic about the story really got me jizzed again. ^_^ {{{Hugs}}} (And no, G-Cat, I am not discounting feedback from my wonderful charming roomies, but an outside viewpoint does help. Mwa.) Louie went adventuring at 03:03 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2003The Outraged Squirrels of November No, the above line has nothing at all to do with the fact that I'm going squirrelly. Really, it doesn't. Still a little behind on my NaNo; I got through the fight scene but have now floundered on what I'm going to do next. (See me lying here with both eyes on the same side of my head? ...very Picasso. It's kind'a fun.) Plus, a new character who started out an unnamed mook is trying to bulldoze his way in and make himself Significant To The Plot -- I think he just doesn't want to get killed. 8 P Ah well, at least I'm mostly recovered from the cold, with only a minor annoying cough left over. In any case, two more chapters of it are up here should anyone be interested. Also, the Hallowe'en pictures have been downloaded from the digital camera, but I didn't have time to crop them down to size for posting before work today. Look for them on Mews this weekend. Fear the Muffin Master!!! ...blee. Louie went adventuring at 10:38 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2003Blew My Buffer Before this weekend, I was almost a full day's word-count ahead on the NaNo thing. Then I came down with either a cold or flu, spent the whole weekend being various kinds of groggy, and have now lost that nice safety margin. Gack. And I hate everything I've written since Friday because it seems like grade-school crapola to me. (G'Cat tells me I'm being overly critical; but when I've got a skull full of gunk where my brain's supposed to be, it's hard to have any perspective.) Yeah. So anyway, I'm up to the next fight scene, and debating whether I should just break out the dice and figure out the start of things that way since I suck at choreographing action. Will also try to HTML-bash the next chapter of mediocrity over my days off (and whatever else I manage to get finished). Today is gray and rainy and I would really rather be asleep. Mneh. Louie went adventuring at 06:21 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2003For any masochists out there in blogland Well, any of you who want to be subjected to NaNoWriMo dreck, that is. First two chapters have been bitchslapped into HTML format and put in the stocks for public shaming here. And I should probably apologize now for The Flashback That Ate an Entire Chapter. >_< And now, onward to today's word quota. Heh. It's so fun to make one's main character do the cockroach shuffle in sheer panic.... Louie went adventuring at 11:07 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2003Current NaNo word count: 9,541 ... and I have just gotten to where the actual plot of the story kicks in. So yeah. The other 'Burgh area writers frighten me. They've come up with a handful of "dares" for the local particpants, like working in mention of "The Boobs That Detroyed Tokyo", or having one of your characters wear penis earrings. I frightened *myself* by actually managing to work one of these into my story. O,o;; Now it's time to take a break from writing and find where my digital camera's hiding, so I can put up those costume pictures over on Mews. Torture of my poor main characters will resume tomorrow. Louie went adventuring at 07:04 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2003Oh yeah, since I forgot to mention it before... current word count is 5,437 (as of this morning, which does not include any writing in progress today). In linear fashion, even, which is SO not the usual way I write. I am mildly jealous of Twig and Ann for being as ahead of the game as they are, but since I'm still in the adequate range I will not hate them. Or myself. I do wonder whether the one author on the Pittsburgh NaNo forums whose word count is already around 15,000 has slept at all since the beginning of the month. O_O Louie went adventuring at 03:08 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2003Yowza. So - the costumes got finished well enough to wear without shame. G-Cat and Riss even got votes for "Best Costume" at the party. (And yes, I did get pictures and they will be posted over the next 2 days, probably linked from Mews.) It was mostly fun, with a little stress around the edges and way too much time spent in the car. To date, I am managing to keep up with my word count for NaNoWriMo. Or at least to catch up on alternating days, which is close enough for jazz, right? ^_^;; If there's time later this week, I'll try to format the first chunk/chapter into HTML and post it to my website, so anybody fool enough to want to read it (gack!) can do so. Be afraid. So, is anybody else involved in NNWM ready to drop-kick their figments from other stories?! Mine are being a pain in the butt. "Hey -- you're trying really hard to focus on this one story, so lemme tell you THIS about MY story, that you couldn't get out of me with a crowbar before." Oh, and then there's the character from much, much farther down the appropriate story line who wants to make an appearance earlier - which is just not practical. ...note to self: find ways to hurt them all. Bad. And between the hand-sewing to finish the costume, and massive amounts of typing, my wrist hurts. **whine** I think I will be wearing a support glove for the entire month of November. However, if I can actually get myself to crank out 50,000 words of fiction, it'll be worth it. Louie went adventuring at 01:33 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 |
