Happy New Year to all!
Okay, so I know I'm a little late with the wishes, but this morning I started the new year out with a migraine. Blee. I mean, if I'd been out partying New Year's Eve, *then* I'd expect to wake up the next day with a hangover... but not when I sat home drinking root beer and watching my roomie play Kingdom Hearts! **sigh**

So, on account of time lost to whimpering in a dark room until the painkillers kicked in -- and then going to see "The Two Towers" while under the influence of said painkillers, which was a fascinating experience -- this entry is late, and my first layout for the new year has been delayed by a day or two.

Resolutions for 2003:
* To finish up a whole passel of incomplete art projects, some of which are sorely overdue.
* To work up my nerve to post some writing online
* ...oh, and I think Thorne has the right idea about resolving to eat fewer spiders.

....eeeeeeeeuuuuwwwwwww.... Definitely eat fewer spiders. Can I have sushi instead?

...and just so you know, "I LIIIIIIIVE! [cackle]" has become a catch-phrase around our house.

Fear it.

Changeling chanted spells at 04:04 p.m. on Monday, December 30, 2002

I got a CD-RW drive for Christmas, and now the brain keeps coming up with a gazillion different CDs I want to burn:a "Typing Disk" for roomie Nan, which has to be all quick-paced tunes; my personal "Best of FFX" CD (which has very little to do with the "official" disc that was released here in the US, blee); another disc of all the best RPG fight music I've heard... the list keeps getting longer and longer. And now, thanks to all the talk about 'character mix soundtracks' (and comparisons to Twig's character Petra), one of my earliest and most annoying characters is all riled up and active again.

A lot of people have probably noticed the tendency in beginning writers and role-playing gamers to make their early characters supermen (or -women, or whatever). They can do it all, on their own, without any help and better than anyone else possibly could. Frequently these characters have preposterous origins, as well. Most of us grow out of this phase when we realize that reading about (or gaming with) Super-Character gets kind'a boring. I mean, if you can do anything, there's not much challenge, right?

Sharlie is from my Super-Character phase and started out capable of entirely too much -- and she did have an utterly ridiculous origin story, which I'm not EVEN going to get into. While I *hope* I've weaned myself off creating that kind of personae anymore, she's never quite gone away. (In fact, if you've been to my website [link at left], she's the chick with the wings & sword on my index page, the 'changeling' in the Graphics.) She's gotten a lot of limitations slapped on her, since her early years, so that she's not quite as superhuman as she started out. And in a way, it's kind of fun having a genetically engineered shapechanger (with a deranged sense of humor) lurking around in the back of my brain.

But since she categorically will not fit into any of the plot lines I'm currently doing my sad best to write, I wish she would SHUT UP, quit nagging that she wants her own "soundtrack", and let me focus!

**ahem** The management would like to apologize for this unseemly rant, and now returns you to your previously scheduled Internet experience.

Now Playing: ...the sound of the coffeemaker burbling to itself

Okay, weblog before coffee -- this could be either interesting, or very surreal. Then again, today's already been pretty surreal. First night back home in my own bed, and it was the Weird-Dream-o-Rama all bloody night. I think my subconscious touched on everything from "Strangers in Paradise" (great comic, more people should read it!!), to one of my original characters playing mind-games on minor background characters from FF8. @,@

I think that last was due to a vague story idea that started whispering itself in my ear yesterday; not in the shower, but somewhere just as impractical -- in the middle of the 5 + hour drive home from Mom's. *sigh* I need borrow Lara's little portable tape recorder next road trip, in case something like this happens again.

(And no, Sharlie, I will NOT turn you loose in FF8 reality. You may not be quite as scary as her Petra, but you would traumatize the people there too badly just by being yourself.)

Now Playing: The NeverEnding Story OST

There's nothing quite like trying to keep up with two very young nieces (one 11 years, the other 14 months) to make me feel my age. Ow. Owowowowowow. I'm creaking and groaning and kvetching as much as that old lady Maxine from the Shoebox cards.

I've been doing the family thing for the holidays, and aside from IM deprivation -- since I can NOT get online via my laptop, with my own software -- it's going pretty well. Heading back home to my usual stomping grounds tomorrow afternoon. Have gotten virtually no writing and no sketching done while with the family; the 14-month-old must be into everything anyone else is doing, which would make either activity difficult and/or hazardous to my equipment (since her idea of 'using' a keyboard of any kind is to slam both little fists down on it as hard as she can, while screeching at the top of her lungs).

I love my family, but in many ways am looking forward to getting back to my so-called real life tomorrow.

So help me, if I'm still in the same work situation next year, I'm going to do *all* my Christmas shopping in October. And have everything wrapped before Thanksgiving. That way I won't be scrabbling madly to get everything done on Christmas Eve. >,<

KYYYAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!
**sigh** Okay, had to get that out of my system. Back to putting ribbons on packages now.

Merry Christmas, to everyone who celebrates it. For those who don't -- Happy (belated) Hanukkah, Joyous Yule, Happy Kwanzaa, or midwinter holiday of your choice!

A random bit of post-game-end Final Fantasy 7 madness: Picture a calm day in Costa del Sol, with Cloud and Tifa happily settled in The Villa...

They hear a knock at the door. Cloud gets up to answer, and finds a shrouded black figure (which looks suspiciously like the ol' Sephiroth-clones) standing outside. Tifa can hear him talking to the figure, shaking his head, and waving away the folded paper pamphlet it tries to hand him.

"Look," Cloud finally says in rather loud, aggravated tones, "we're just not interested. Been there, done that, NOT going back."

Slamming the door in the intruder's face, he stalks back over to Tifa.

"Who was that?" she asks.

Cloud rolls his eyes. "Darn Jenova's Witnesses...."

We're on the downhill slide at the REC! They're ramping us back to our regular working hours now. *whew* On our busiest day, Monday the 16th, we processed over 3,111,000 mail images. Tues. & Wed. were still well over 2 1/2 million each. Gack. Even *with* the holiday shoppers, my two days at the store this week felt like a mini-vacation.

Overall I'd say my hands are in better shape than this time last year, but it still feels like someone grabbed hold of my right thumb and yanked it hard enough to dislocate the thing. >,< owowowowow... Very much looking forward to a few consecutive days off over the holidays.

Waitaminnit [blink blink] you're telling people I'm "sparkly"? ...wow, I'm gonna have to go roll in my roomie's craft glitter when I get home! Wouldn't want to get you in trouble for false advertising. (g)

The worst is supposedly over, at least at the REC. (Don't get me started about the country in general or this will turn into a time-consuming rant.) Yesterday was predicted to be the single heaviest mailing day of the holiday season, and I think everyone who works at the REC has got the sore hands to prove it. We're still scheduled for long hours all the rest of this week, but hopefully the mail volume won't be quite as heavy from here on out. Don't know how many images we coded Monday night, but for the previous week we were averaging about 2.5 million mail-pieces per night. Yowza.

And on the home front, roomie Nan and I finally had one of those dazzling "Well, DUH, why didn't we think of that before?!" revelations about her betta. As in, what Final Fantasy guy with mucho (non-white) hair had we not already abused? So now, his name is Zack!. ^_^

Now Playing: more Mannheim Steamroller - "A Fresh Aire Christmas", this time

I think I'm getting too old for the hours I've been keeping. >,< Yesterday, I got up and started running errands somewhere around 10 am. Between a little bit of Christmas shopping, a lot more planning, and the dire need to get cat litter, I was pretty much on the move from then until it was time to get ready for work last night, and then worked until 11 pm. Which wouldn't have been so bad, I guess, except I can't just come home from the REC and go straight to bed - have to decompress first, which means bedtime was sometime between 2 and 2:30 am. Then, up again this morning at 8:30 so I can get to my other job.

Today, I am a zombie. We're talking absolute genuine undead, here. (Although not a 20-foot tall Hostess pseudo-pastry with laser eyes. ...yet. Although I don't think anyone but you and my roomie Nan will understand the reference.)

Twelve more days to Christmas -- no, you idiot characters, NOT that Twelve Days, please quit singing! -- and I hope I survive that long. Next week, the shifts run until 1:30 am again. **sigh**

I should probably count my blessings -- at least it wasn't an ad for pr0n sites this time! But still... it's a bloody nuisance to have to go through and edit them out. No tunes today.

Yesterday I went and did it – signed up for an author ID on fanfiction.net. One step closer to actually subjecting the world to something I’ve written… and opening myself up to the criticism and flames of outraged fangirls, because no matter what a body writes, SOMEone is gonna be outraged. (Ah, one of the benefits of my ‘advanced years’… at least I’m already aware of that much.) I’m not going to admit to which handle is mine, and it may be months yet before anything of my writing is ready to be posted [grumble mumble darn holiday hours at work]. But after having my confidence thoroughly squashed a while back… well, it’s a step.

It’s very strange to be sitting here watching roomie Nan perform brain surgery on her new griffin puppet! Actually, its eyes were set in rather crooked, and she wanted to straighten them out to make him look a little more friendly. But it is supremely weird to see her with the puppet on her lap and its head turned inside out so she can get to the eyes….

And speaking of bizarreness, has anybody else out there seen “Spidey-Berry” Pop-Tarts? @,@;; Blue and gray frosting, on pastry died bright red with food coloring. Scary stuff.

One again, it's "Random Thoughts from the Remote Encoding Center!" (aka, strange things that run rampant in my brain when I'm bored at work)

** A bored supervisor at the Flats control desk is a dangerous thing. Lisa was sending us prompts through the system trying to incite us so sing lines from Christmas carols on the "No Talking Allowed!" work floor.

** The people at Sony are either stupid, overworked, or both. They're mailing out huge numbers of EverCrack discs to things that don't even remotely resemble real addresses, like "Jane Doe, 1234 Rdusyels, Abcdefgh CA 98765". I sincerely hope they have some kind of automated program that spits out the labels for these things, not that a human being who's working for them is not bright enough to realize these aren't legit.

** The CPU and monitor kitty-corner from my last spot in Flats were both marked "Ran". All I could think of is a certain surly red-haired Fujimiya from Weiss Kreuz... altho' I can't really picture him working at the REC; he really would "go postal".

Now Playing: James Galway, "Song of the Seashore and Other Melodies of Japan"

Somehow in the course of a week, we ended up with four new fish. It started with a trip to a local pet store we hadn't visited before, in search of new dry cat foods for our allergic-to-chicken Egyptian Mau. We didn't find any of those, at the nearby Petco. What we did find was a huge display of male bettas (aka Siamese fighting fish).

Now, ever since roomie Nan named her two goldfish Cid and Reno, I've been threatening to get a red betta and name him Vincent. So when we saw this display, I thought it was time to follow through on the threat, and picked up an 'impulse fish', complete with a little "Critter Keeper" plastic tank to put him in. Nan, meantime, had glommed onto a betta whose fins - rather than being solid down their entire length - were, well, divided? (Lousy picture, but it's not easy photographing fish through the side of a plastic tank.) This isn't battle damage, he's some kind of variant or something, and it makes him look like an anime bishounen fish.

We got the fish home, and somehow my red boy just did NOT feel or act like a Vincent. And the tank I'd bought to keep him in had a crack in one of the corners so it wouldn't hold water. So I took it back to the store to exchange for a different bowl, and of course then I found the real Vincent. He's black and red, he's got the frilly fins, and he looks oh-so-Goth (well, okay, for a fish anyhow)... gotta be Vince. We also made a "mercy purchase" of the store's last female betta. (Another blurry photo, sorry!) The girl bettas had been tossed into tanks with goldfish, and three out of four had already died.

As yet, Nan's frilly male and the lone female remain unnamed. Meanwhile, my first betta has now been renamed Red 13.

No tunes right now. With much paint under my fingernails and a little bit of cussing, I managed to finish a cel painting today that I'm moderately pleased with. It's of Haku, from the Miyazaki film Spirited Away -- well, not exactly from the film, this is Haku looking like he might in his late teens, rather than 10 - 11. It still needs a background (color pencils, which I'll be trying to finish tomorrow) before I can scan it for the website. Strange factoid: nobody in Miyazaki films seems to get hair highlights. And while it made painting the hair a lot simpler, somehow it just didn't seem right to skip the highlights!

I'd kind of been kicking around a rough sketch of this picture, and then I read the Spirited Away 'fic that N-chan posted on her site. That clinched it. Had to do something with the picture. Even if he isn't dressed quite right to fit with the story. ^_^

Now Playing: Final Fantasy X OST, Disc 1

Today just seems to have been a FF sort of day. Just got done watching the first four episodes of Final Fantasy: Unlimited, and while it had its good and bad points, I enjoyed it overall.

The Negatives:
* The series' art style is a little more simplistic than I like.
* 3-D computer animation and standard animation were not well-blended overall. This may improve as the series continues, but I won't hold my breath.
* Extremely unsympathetic (so far) male lead -- even worse than Squall Leonheart.
* Annoying little leader of the group of villains, makes me just want to smack the spoiled brat silly.

The Positives:
* Chocobo!!
* 12-year-old Ai, half innocent and half cynic, who has a wonderful and frequently used grumpy-face expression...
* Trying to figure out which Summon Creature Kaze is going to fire out of the Demon Gun this time is a fun game. (Four eps in, I've only gotten 1 of 3 right, tho'... thank goodness for Shiva!)
* Cutest damn' Cid I've ever seen (given voice by Seki Toshihiko, one of my fave seiyuu).

...now I just have to get my hands on the rest of the series. Oh, and find time to watch it. >,< Probably won't see more until after the holidays, dangit.

Darn Pittsburgh weather! It was foggy here all night, sliding into rain early this morning, and I didn't get to see a single shooting star out of the Leonid meteor shower. Grumpf. Call the police; that's the second year in a row we've gotten robbed of our sky-show.

On the other hand, I should probably be grateful... Mother Nature saved me from getting any more sleep-deprived than I already am this week. >,< Saw the Harry Potter movie on Sunday, enjoyed it muchly. Didn't even have to cringe at the computer graphics this time! (that so-called "centaur" in Sorcerer's Stone...{{shudder}}) However, it had the unfortunate side-effect of making me try to figure out what was different between the movie and novel -- which lead to re-reading the last three of the dang books. I looked up in the middle of Goblet of Fire and realized it was past 4 am... d'oh! Luckily I work my later-evening job on Mondays, but it was still almost snore city.

No music right now...

I'm already over 5,000 words behind the daily quota I'd have to be writing in order to try to complete a 50,000 word novel-length story before the end of November, so I think it's a lost cause... which means, time to focus on getting artwork done for my next art show, which is also at the end of November. (I think that book challenge is for people who only have one hobby / vocation - writing.)

Since I'm already about 8 pages into it, I do not intend to abandon the story... I just won't finish it by deadline, and nothing would get posted before the end of the year, since the PO job is about to go ballistic until after Christmas.

However, this means I should have an art website update within a couple of weeks. Probably some more anime stuff, since for some reason that seems to go over really well at the regular SF conventions. ^_^ ...which ticks off the serious *artistes* who claim that anime art isn't "real art" a'tall, and amuses me no end because I sell more than the folks who make that statement do. Short exchange at 12:50 am, while I was trying to commit 'fic:

Nan: "It's that blood-type A thing."
Nan: "As opposed to the AB thing." [does the 'Mako-Poisoned Cloud' Head Bob]
Me: "As opposed to the Maker-only-knows blood type?" [crossing eyes] (since Sephiroth's is listed as "??")
Nan: "Was that 'Mako only knows?' ...No no no, Mako's supposed to be in the eyes, not the nose!"
Me: "Ah, so you're not supposed to snort that stuff instead of injecting it..."
Me: "And then there's Cid... 'Hey, lemme try smoking it!'..."

And then, 10 minutes later, in a discussion about food: "Yeah, but I'd avoid the fettucini alfredo anyhow, because I'm not really into white-sauce stuff. ...well, except for yaoi fics." >,<

To whoever submitted my anime fanart page URL to Animetro.com's directory -- thank you! ^_^ I didn't even realize I was listed with them until I got a hit through their site.

Ramen noodles are evil. Okay, usually I like them, but yesterday my ramen noodles leapt out of the bowl I was pouring them into, and tried to scald my left hand; quick thinking & first-aid on roomie Nan's part saved me from a real burn and left me with onlyl very mind discomfort. And while I can almost laugh about it today, it scared the beans outta me at the time. (Both my jobs involve lots of typing, and since we're getting into the start of holiday season they're both cranking into high gear on me.)

I found out last Saturday that there's some kind of challenge on for the month of November, in which people are dared to write an entire 50,000 word novel during this month. (Over 16,000 people are reportedly trying to do this. Some people are crazed enough to try to crank out more than one!) Since I didn't find out about it until the 10th, that would have required me writing 2500 words a day from then until the end of the month. I actually managed to do this on Sunday, but yesterday the ramen noodles derailed my master plan. >,<

I got to see Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" last weekend. ^_^ [happy dance] ...I didn't even mind the English dub, and coming from a dyed-in-the-wool Sub Snob, that's saying something. I got all even dressed up myself, to play "greeter"; wearing the antique kimono I just bought off eBay, along with a semi-cleverly faked under-kimono and the world's sorriest attempt at tabi socks, which I sewed myself (and might be salvageable, if I can tailor them down to a point where they no longer look like clown socks!). Now if I could lose about 30 pounds [pause for massive laughter at that concept] -- well, the kimono would still be too short, but it's gorgeous anyway and I had to wear it at least once before it's relegated to being a large and elegant wall-hanging.

We've never gotten a whole lot of kids trick-or-treating here at the house, but this is the first year we haven't gotten a single one. I'm going to sulk now... and eat about a half dozen of those little candy bars that nobody showed up to take off our hands.

Now Playing: the chattering of my teeth

I feel like I've joined the freaking Polar Bears Club.

The bottom of our house's hot water heater didn't fall away this morning -- nothing that dramatic. However, sometime between yesterday and today it did spring a lovely, medium-sized leak. Which meant that this morning my roommate Lara, who is the early riser of the lot of us, got what we call a "Pennsic Shower" (taken from the SCA's big annual camp-out, the Pennsic Wars - infamous for the tepid water temperature in the main bath house). Other roomie Nan promptly started calling around at the start of business hours, trying to get the decrepit monster replaced.

Home Despot had the best price, and swore that they could get it installed today, this afternoon in fact; however, they didn't actually call the plumber who does their installations until after Nan went in and signed all the paperwork to buy a new one. Then after Nan signed the last signature, and was on her way home, they called the house: their plumber had gotten SIX more calls, and now suddenly our installation was pushed back until sometime tomorrow afternoon.

This is not the thing that two unwashed women who really REALLY want their showers sometime today thankyouverymuch! wish to hear. Nan called Home Despot back, and was told that they were calling alternate plumbers in an attempt to get us fixed up today after all. Eventually we got another call-back: someone will be here "before the end of the day". Better than nothing, and Nan agreed not to cancel the sale and call "Mr. WaterHeater" instead. Then the plumber -- obviously having more mercy than the Despots -- called directly; he has shuffled jobs around and will be here before 1 PM. Yay!!

However, I couldn't wait that long, and hosed myself off in a tub of barely-room-temperature water. >,< This from a woman who takes half an hour to work her way into a cool swimming pool in the summer! Thank goodness the house's heat is still working, and I have toasty fleece clothing.

Ah well, time to stop venting and go 'decorate' the house in hopes of trick-or-treaters now.

Now Playing: 20020220 Music from Final Fantasy - yup, the Final Fantasy Orchestra Concert! The music sounds cool, but Tidus' and Yuna's seiyuu do a little too much babbling as the MC's.

New Layout Time!! I got bored with my original tame little ivy-patterned layout and decided to play around. And since Cecil never got enough air-time in the Lodoss TV series, and there was this oh so bishonen pic of him... Hey, what can I say? Pretty-boy mages are a weakness of mine, and Cecil's got more -- oomph? temper? ...testosterone? or all of the above -- than most of the archetype.

The three day migraine appears to have finally gone away, thank goodness. >,< Is tomorrow really Hallowe'en already?! Yeesh, we haven't decorated the house or anything. Must dig up decorations and get ready for small costumed ghouls. We don't get a lot of trick-or-treaters along our street, but there are a few; and I still love throwing on a costume myself in order to greet 'em at the door. (Note to self... must make sure there are good batteries in the screaming door mat!)
