A New Breed of Flying Squirrel... So G-Cat and I were sitting in the living room Monday when we saw activity at the bird feeder outside the window. Since we've recently seen not only our annual mated pair of cardinals in the yard but also a goldfinch couple, we snuck to the curtains to see who was out there this time. G-Cat got there first, and started snickering because there was not a bird at the feeder a'tall - it was a fat, sassy gray squirrel, hanging upside-down like a trapeze artist from the shepherd's hook that holds the feeder, with its front paws resting on the tray. Very funny to watch, yes... but I didn't want him to get too comfortable raiding the bird feeder like that. So I thumped on the window to startle it away. Imagine my surprise when the squirrel *launched* horizontally, like it had been fired out by an invisible slingshot, TOWARDS the wall of the house! Our walls are brick, I can only imagine it intended to climb up the wall to get away; we've seen squirrels scaling the building that way before. But the little bugger literally launched itself four feet from a hanging-upside-down start! I am in awe of such mad acrobatic skillz. ...so much in awe that if I see it on our feeder in the future, I'll HAVE to see if it can repeat the performance! X D HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TSAIKO!! Sorry to be slow, and hope you had an incredibly wonderful day. ^_^ {{{Hugs}}} Changeling manned the crow's nest at 09:51 p.m. on Monday, April 26, 2004One Heck of a Wake-Up Call I was already awake this morning - and had just crawled back into bed after taking something for the headache I woke up with - when lightning hit something maybe two or three blocks away from the house. The huge crash of thunder right afterwards launched all of us Mews *and* the Four Housecats of the Apocalypse out of our beds. O_O;; Yeek. So. Yeah. Early wake-up makes for a groggy Changeling. The plus side: being groggy seems to make it a little bit easier to convince the figments to behave... they're not coherent enough to argue. "What, you're working on *that* again?! Geez... [**yawn**]" Heh. So check your mailbox, Twig, there should be something waiting there now. Am now loopy from pain drugs for headache, so stopping now before this descends into random babble. We'll see if loopy also makes for cooperative figments. Woo-hoo. Changeling manned the crow's nest at 08:17 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2004Spam "Poetry" of the Week: Thunder Wine Prose Busybusybusy weekend, but I think I might be recovered now, if still somewhat groggy. **blink blink** Much, much fun having a whirlwind Twig visit. Got to see new anime, "Kino's Journey," on Thursday afternoon, had to work Friday but getting the paycheck is always good. Got up much earlier than usual on Saturday for the writing seminar, which was the first time I've set foot in a college classroom in - well, in averylongtime. Since this was strictly about writing for publication, they didn't bother with much talk about the actual mechanics of writing itself; the tag-team instructors figured anyone showing up for this course would already know (or be studying) those. They talked more about writing query letters to agents/editors/publishers, how to "pitch" your project (which left me a shivering wreck because I get nervous making phone calls to places I don't know, let along trying to convince a stranger he or she should pay good money for something I've written). I still have half a ream of paper's worth of photocopies of various articles to read through, too. Had to leave for work before the last little bit, although Twiggins assures me that what I missed - one of the speakers talking about job options on the publishing side of the industry rather than the authoring side - wasn't what I went for in the first place. Escaped work in time to get a decent night's sleep before Sunday's roadtrip... then stayed up too late anyway, sneaking in the last disc of "Haibane Renmei". *sniffle* Sunday morning: awake, dressed and on the road before dawn to go see the wonderful Thorne. This is quite an accomplishment for me, as I'm so far beyond "Not A Morning Person" it isn't even funny. Did manage not to fall asleep in the car, although I can't have been very entertaining for the early parts of the drive. Getting to the college took a little longer than expected (sorry to keep you waiting, Thorne!). The campus is lovely and feels more like a large summer camp than a school, or at least it does on a spring Sunday afternoon. I gawped around like a tourist and picked up arster shells on the quick tour. (Oh yes, and I did kick Evil Sailboat #4 for bashing her last year. Nasty, *wicked* sailboat.) On top of being extremely clever, charming and cute, Thorne also cooks a very tasty beef with broccoli stir-fry. And the photos of Rome - yowza. (especially that one shot of "David"... mmmm) Her oft-mentioned roomie Louise is also cute, and filches cans of Sprite and has the most infectious smile I've seen in a long time. Oh, and I sooo suck at DDR; made me feel like a geriatric patient. ^_^;; The drive home was seasoned with plotbits from many Twig short stories I dearly hope to see written (and published! Yeah!) soon. And we so so so did not want to give her back when the weekend was over, but since there were job interviews mentioned it's probably just as well we did. *sigh* Worked Monday and yesterday, and finally got to sleep in like a slug this morning. Woo! So yes, busy weekend - and well worth every moment of it. Changeling manned the crow's nest at 11:12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2004The Voice of Reason (and it's not mine) ...that's one of the many roles Rissi fills around this place. She is the Repository of Most Common Sense. I came home from work Saturday night grumping my way around the house because of not getting next Saturday off; Sunday morning she said to me, "You know, if they have open slots at that workshop, I'm going to sign you up for it anyway... even if you do have to leave for work, you'd only miss one hour of the seminar." Me: ...O,o Eh heh. Yeah, so I'm going after all, and will miss 1/2 to 1 hour of the "Publishing Strategies" portion of the program, and the Working Writers Panel after dinner. However, since I am lucky enough to know a working writer and can ask her stuff about real-life experience with publishers & such, I don't see that as being a big crisis. Oh yeah, and I didn't get smited (smote?) for writing naughtiness on a holy day, either... tho' that could be because I didn't get much done. >_< Changeling manned the crow's nest at 09:33 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2004Take This Job And... ...well, I'm sure you all know the rest. Short of a winning lottery ticket in-hand before Monday, I have zero, zilch, zip chance of making the writer's conference at Rissi's college next weekend. This never being able to do things on weekends because of the stupid PO job...? I'm getting very tired of it Definitely time to start sending out resumes so I can fly them the bird and fly on outta there. *sigh* Oh well, at least I have pointless smut with which to distract myself. So in the last week, the House of Mews has gone to the dogs (visiting friends who brought their Samoyeds to the dog show held at our convention center last weekend; a puppy fix *that* size should hold me for, oh, the better part of a year), and gotten fishy (by going to the Original Seafood Company for dinner after the show; talk about salmon heaven!). Oh yes... and I've been wrestling with a Brain-Eating Story [TM]. It was supposed to be a simple, silly, pointless thing; a light-hearted bit of PWP... ...it is now over 16,000 words and not yet finished. About - halfway done, maybe? Oh yeah - and winter can go away now. Really it can. Look, see here, on the calendar? It's *spring* now -- so QUIT TRYING TO SNOW! That is all. Thank you. Changeling manned the crow's nest at 07:40 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 2004RIP Discman After two and a half years of heavy labor, my poor personal CD player finally kicked the bucket this week. Had to run out and get a new one before work today so I could have tunes while I typed. The new model has this funky little built-in remote control thingy on the headphone cord, which I feared at first - but it is kind'a fun to play with, and more convenient than learning where the buttons are on the body of the new player. It also has better bass boost than the old one. Kiss my eardrums goodbye! Currently listening to: Gensomaden Saiyuki OST 1 (re-burned onto CDR *minus* the four painful, painful banjo-and/or-honkytonk-piano-heavy tracks). Preposterous smut has run off gleefully with my brain cell and won't let go. It's making me feel like a dirty old lady... not that this is necessarily a *bad* thing. ^_^;; Changeling manned the crow's nest at 01:03 a.m. on Sunday, March 28, 2004There Should Be a Law ...against women my age (and weight) doing cosplay. Especially last-minute cosplay. Especially last-minute, cross-gender cosplay. **cough** Right. So my boss from the store called Wednesday afternoon to tell me one of my co-workers, who was supposed to help her at the local anime convention on Friday, wasn't feeling well enough to do the dealers' room thing, and would I mind going instead? ...oh, gee, twist my arm here boss! The other Mews and I were planning on doing a one-day trip on Sunday anyhow, but this would not only give me a chance to get a couple things into the art show for the weekend, but also get a good look around the dealers' room before half the interesting stuff went away. Immediately after hanging up the phone, though, I was torn; do a new piece of art, or try to make a hall costume? Wednesday pm, dragged G-Cat out on a fabric store run and got what I'd need for cosplay. Thursday I spent working on a picture - but liked the pencil & ink work enough NOT to want to rush through coloring it and messing the whole thing up. (I will be finishing it soon, though, was a nice start and I haven't really been inspired to commit art in a while.) Friday am - off to far side of city to the convention hotel. Luckily, G-Cat and I were just out there a few weeks ago to visit a friend, so I at least knew where I was going and didn't get lost. Boss had the store's display 3/4 set up by the time I got there, which gave me time to toss my art into the show. Most of Friday was eaten by selling in the dealers' room; I did manage to get pictures of a few of the hall costumes. The booth next to ours was overflowing with *cuteness*; Sanrio's Hello Kitty stuff, Studio Ghibli plushes, Nyan Nyan Nyanko and Taro Panda (?) plushes, and... remember those plush "Giant Microbes" Twig mentioned a while back? Well, they didn't have the Ebola and Black Plague varieties at the show, but they DID have: Strep Throat, Athlete's Foot, Mono (complete with long eyelashes), Bad Breath, the Common Cold, the Flu, (I know I'm missing a couple here) and - my personal favorite - Ulcer, which had yarn strands on one end, rather like long "hair". The owner shook one around in time to the music playing across the aisle, and I got flashbacks to the old "Bohemian Rhapsody" video. Head-bangin' H. Pylori! X D Got home about 8:30 Friday night and cut the fabric pieces needed for the costume. I debated exactly how deranged I was for trying to do this, but got up early Saturday anyhow to start sewing. The machine work went pretty quickly, despite the fact that the machine kept trying to munch the silver lame for the accessories. Hand-sewed on accessories until it was time to leave for work - and after I got home from my shift, too. Gah. Finally fell down at about 2:45 am. Being sleep-deprived Sunday morning probably helped dull the terror I should have been feeling when I put the dang thing on - but nobody laughed and pointed, and we had fun at the show, so all's well. Vel, your Sanzo costume looked really good, and put my efforts to shame... and it's probably a good thing we're on different continents, or I'd have been forced to pick a fight with you. (...oh, did I forget to mention my costume was Kougaiji...?) ^_^;; (Yes, pictures were taken. No, I will not be posting them publicly, as I would not inflict that on an unsuspecting world. If anybody *really* feels masochistic and wants to see, e-mail me at the addy in the sidebar - or catch me on IM - and I'll tell you where to find them.) So that's part of why I haven't posted to my blog for too long now. (The rest, of course, being pure lazy-ass-ness.) Some quick social stuff: Tsaiko, I have to say that your students are morons. {{{Hugs}}} So sorry they have the attention spans of gnats. Dave, once you go past the normal dose of 2 regular-strength Tylenol, there's no measureable difference in pain relief until you hit *7* regular-strength tablets - at which point you can kiss your liver goodbye. >,< I'd recommend sticking with the ibuprofen anyhow, it's better for muscle pain because it's also an anti-inflammatory. Ja. Changeling manned the crow's nest at 09:25 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2004How many chances do we get to save a life? For most of us - who aren't police officers, firefighters or EMTs - the answer to that is "not too many." Here in the Pittsburgh area, there is an 11 year old girl named Amy Katz who's been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (or CML). She's currently undergoing chemotherapy with a new drug still in the study phase, but the only *known* cure for CML is a stem cell transplant. Unfortunately, the entire National Bone Marrow Donor Registry has already been searched - all 8 million or so registered donors in it - with no match. She's still looking for someone to help save her life. If you are not a registered marrow donor, and if you've *ever* considered signing up to help someone whose only hope for a healthy life is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, please please check out the information on the Amy's Army website. The Army is a group of volunteers trying to help this young woman, and they list a great number of ways to get yourself tested and typed for the registry, whether or not you are in the Pittsburgh region. My inner child is ten years old!
The adult world is pretty irrelevant to me. Whether How Does One Hotwire a Back-hoe...? I really wish I knew, because the plumbers who replaced our house sewer line left theirs parked in the front yard over the weekend. It was this really cute, half-sized one and I would have loved to crank that puppy up and play with it. *sigh* So yeah, we have unimpeded sewer line again and this is a very good thing. Today the plumbers are back to replace the concrete section of our front walk they had to take out in order to access the line. I'm hoping it's still wet enough, when I get home from work, for us all to sign it. Yeah, so it's juvenile, but I've never gotten to do that before and G-Cat and I want to "personalize" it (if Rissi will let us... ^_^;; ). Thorne, I offer {{{hugs}}} and sympathy for your doujinshi trauma. That even beats out the one I found online that had Vincent getting topped by Pikachu. >,< Dreading going in to work today, because it may well turn out to be my last at the store... the situation there has gotten pretty unpleasant and it's really not worth the long commute anymore. Right - (deep breath, square my shoulders, slap myself firmly on both sides of the face) - I'm off. ...but then, you all *knew* that already. Changeling manned the crow's nest at 10:59 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2004NOT a Morning Person ...especially not on Saturdays, but the plumbers are here to tear up our front yard and replace the main house sewer line, and I am not a heavy enough sleeper to get through the cheerful sounds of a backhoe being unloaded from a truck. (Nor yet of it breaking through the concrete of our front walk to get to the pipe in need of replacing.) So I'm awake - if not quite conscious, and since there was coffee already made up, not too grumpy about it - and catching up on stuff like the reading of blogs and settling of eBay foo... and the taking of quizzes.
...but do I *have* to get my mind out of the gutter? X D Okay, I'll admit, I do sing quite a bit (yes, even along with the car stereo. often.) and while I don't compose - unless the impromptu mangling of song lyrics a la Weird Al counts - she suits me much better than the Tragedy Muse who's been floating around. Anyhow, I have the Library page up at Laranica now; have transferred my NaNo story, "Duality," there and it will shortly be joined by the first chapter of a D&D-inspired story that will eventually end up in Laranica the city. I'd like to get some fanfiction there too, eventually, but first I have to beat some of 'em into shape; seems a little silly to make a 'fic page just for the two drabbles I've written. ^_^;; Tsaiko, I'm sorry you're not getting more support for your Master's project from your school. {{{Hugs!}}} Also, my sympathies on dealing with Creepy Anime Guy - we get enough of the type at the store that I know what you mean. ...and I finally got to ask my co-worker about the information about Witch Hunter Robin on the SciFi Channel; he found it here. Having not learned my lesson from watching this, I am now trying to organize something similar for the club I (in my own rather half-assed way) edit. So far I've been deluding myself into thinking that trying to run this as several smaller cooperative efforts (with, say, two or three writers working together on each chunk) will make it less of a monster than the first club's big co-write. Just thought I'd warn folks about this now, because I'll probably end up whimpering about it eventually. ^_^;; Meanwhile in the Real World, it's actually approaching freezing here in Pittsburgh today; some of our massive mounds of driveway shovelage might even (*gasp*) melt!! At this point, I have to be very gentle with my opponents in boss fights, or not everybody gets a chance to take a swing at them. So I wrapped up my gaming day at the Lake Macalania temple. And all I can say is... Okay, so I liked her in FF7, thought her (and her attack) very pretty in 8. The 9 version doesn't stick as well in the memory (probably because she was chibified like everybody else in 9). But... yeek. Yes, I am female. This stops me from boggling over FFX Shiva? Heck no. Again, I say: O_O In other news, G-Cat spent some time today setting up her aquarium. All leveled and filled and the filter is running (and making new and unusual noises in the house; in fact, while I sat here at the computer it faked me out more than once into thinking that one of the cats was having a hairball... hope that settles out!). Now she has to decide what kinds of fish and plants she wants to put in it. The commute home from work tonight was like driving through a shitstorm of *glitter*. O_o Changeling manned the crow's nest at 01:03 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2004Attack of the Amazing Klutz Woman As I told Thorne recently, I am a very clumsy person; and somehow, most of my self-inflicted injuries seem to occur when I'm just horsing around with the fellow Mews. Case in point: last night I cracked some gawd-awful pun in front of Rissi. It was sufficiently bad that she gave me an 'air slap' as punishment, and when I decided to do a slow-motion pratfall into the door in reaction, I ended landing directly on a magnet stuck to the door (you two will know what I mean when I say it was one of the trundlebugs). So now I have this lovely bruise on the back of my left shoulder, and a stiff cranky arm to deal with. *sigh* I hate being clumsy... and/or stupid, as the case may be. Anyhow, being able to do idjwit crap like that clearly indicates that I'm long over any fussage about last week's wisdom tooth thing. (Thank-yous to Thorne and Catt; I only needed a *little* bit of coddling, but was still very nice. ^_^) Vel'ithya, if you still need a break from the heat Down Under, could you waft a little of it up this way? And to everyone who's getting back into the swing of classes for a new term -- GO YOU! Knock their socks off. Changeling manned the crow's nest at 01:56 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2004Chick Flick Night So Rissi has been campaigning for quite a while to hit the movies and see "Love Actually," and tonight she finally whacked us *really* hard with the clue-by-four and got us out to the theater. It was better than I'd expected, although I think I might have enjoyed the movie more if I hadn't tried quite so hard to keep track of all the many intertwining storylines (as G-Cat recommended -- afterward, darn it). Not happy endings for all the characters, but certainly enough of them to make for a satisfied feeling upon leaving the theater. My other main accomplishment for the day was raiding the big moving sale at our local fabric store. They have everything marked down 50 to 80 % because they don't want to haul it the mile or so down the road to their new location. Which means for gleeful plundering on the part of fabric hounds. I picked up several more patterns, some lovely linen-blend fabric, batik-print cotton, and doodads to play with. Whee! ...all of which is going to have to wait until it gets warm enough to work out in the studio again, but it's mostly summer weight fabric anyhow. Hmm, since I haven't finished any art for the site in a while, I think it's time to dig up some photos of various craft and/or sewing projects that have eaten my time instead and make a new section for 'em. And he just shook his head and answered, "Oh, yeah. All the time." ...BOHICA, indeed. So, it's toodamncold and snowing again here in lovely, gloomy Pennsylvania. (Twig, you took the sunshine back to Texas with you when you left... any chance you could mail us a little? Please?) I have an appointment to probably get a wisdom tooth pulled first thing tomorrow morning (not impacted, thank goodness, just a simple yank-and-gone sort of thing). On the brighter side, I did get some writing done today - even if it was for a sap-fic for an obscure game, it's something and it proves the writing braincell isn't dead yet, or burnt out by NaNoWriMo. Next on the docket is finishing Chapter 11 of the NaNo story. Braincell: "I feel fine..." Er. Yeah. Right, back to thawing. Then, darn it all, we had to let the Twiggins go home. **pout** We're still working on convincing her & Luns to move up here, or at least somewhere closer by that would be an easy road trip. Now I should be able to return to my regularly scheduled life, including posting in the dang blog every so often. The down side is that this also includes getting back to my regular work schedule -- and I have to leave for the store now. Farkle. Will babble more later.
