Ethan has anew fascination with names. He points at pictures and slowly pronounces the name of those he recognizes. Josh, Wendy, Claire, Esther, Craig, Todd, Jenn - the list goes on. We saw our friend Gabe in NYC a few weeks ago and he fell asleep on the couch. Now, whenever Ethan says "Gabe" it is immediately followed by "sleep" - a difficult legacy to be sure.

We're trying to teach him our names so he can say Doug and Caroline instead of Papa and Mama. Yesterday Ethan and I were lying on the bed and he let our a series of calls for his mother to come in from the other room. Phonetically - "Care Lean", "Care Lean".

Two word noun/verb pairs are a new part of Ethan's vocabulary. He loves to play a game where everyone (human and animal) has to sit on the steps with him. We have "Papa Sit", "Zeke Sit" and "Sasha Sit" until we're all piled in a heap on one small step. Unfortunately we usually progress to "Horace Throw" - why Horace is subjected to constant throwing remains a mystery.

A few days in New York City have taught Ethan a new concept - shadows. He was fascinated lying on his back, staring up at the ceiling and watching the lights move and change as the cars went by. At one point he was almost perfectly still for twenty minutes and kept repeating his new mantra "shadow, shadow, shadow".

Ethan now insists that we browse the web the way he wants us to do it. Principally, we need to look at one website and one only, Kikki's Workshop, sponsored by Komatsu - makers of the big construction equipment used in our town's current reconstruction.

Yesterday Eric Carle was at MASSMoCA for a book signing and reception. It's really great when you can meet a mega-celebrity, even if it's in a niche like childrens books, who is talented, sweet and humble.

Ethan is now the proud owner of signed copies of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, and Do You Want to be My Friend.

Ethan refuses to acknowledge the existence of giraffes. He can identify the standard barnyard and domestic animals with ease - cat, dog, cow, horse, sheep, goat etc. etc. He also has an excellent grasp of more exotic creatures - hippo, gorilla and busabo (buffalo) but, for reasons that defy my logic, simply balks when presented with an image of a giraffe. Thoughts? Theories? Let me know.
