And no, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon just because they whupped the Browns this Sunday, but that did catch my attention. I don't know why I didn't notice them earlier. Perhaps it was because I was looking for a team called The Tigers, and not The Bengals, but guess what? Yep, their mascot is still a TIGER!!!
I watched the Broncos almost beat the Raiders last night. They were defeated by a huge pair of hands which deflected a potentially game-winning punt to keep the Raiders in front at the final siren. I felt nothing for either team. Although I felt the Broncos deserved the win a little more I didn't feel sorry for them. I also was not that happy about a victory for the team which resided in Los Angeles for a while.
Next Sunday the Bengals take on the Ravens at Baltimore. If that game is being televised, I'm watching it and I'm rooting for the Bengals. Go Tigers!!! :)

What's a paperboy to doooooo...
I'd just like to say that John Edward has his father's internal clock. I established a rule that if he gets up before 7am, he has to either stay in bed, or climb into our bed with us. No wanting to play Nintendo with Dad at 6am on a Saturday morning. Fortunately we have a digital clock next to bed and JE now knows if the first number is not a 7, then it's not time to get up.
Wouldn't you know it, after implementing this rule, JE has been getting up at just a minute or two after 7am almost every day. Yay for internal body clocks! :)
I've decided I need a Gridiron (as opposed to real football) team to follow, and not a college team (curse you USC for spanking the proverbial derriere of my Fighting Irish!) but a proball team. A friend recommend the Buccaneers on account of them having a thumping great Pirate Ship in their stands, which does seem kind of cool. I don't particularly like the Raiders on account of everyone else in SoCal liking them so it would seem like I'm just jumping on the band wagon, plus the Raiders are not really an L.A. team any longer, nor are the Rams, or the Jets, or the Chargers...or every other team L.A. has had and lost. I like Tigers but oddly enough there are no proball Tiger teams (there's a college team of Tigers though, even the local Occidental College are the Tigers). There are Jaguars and Lions and Panthers, but no Tigers. There's Bears, but no Tigers. While there are Jaguars in South America, there are none here in North America, native that is, and Lions are not native to either North or South America...so why isn't there a Tiger team?
I'd like a team, but I can't decide which one to follow. I looked at the teams on the NFL's website and nothing really leaped out at me. So, anyone have any suggestions?

It just wouldn't be Christmas
without Credit Card fraud.
Two years ago Liz and I were Christmas shopping at the local mall. I managed to leave my credit card in one store and didn't realize I'd left it behind until we went to make a purchase in the next store. Returning to the previous store the clerk made a show about checking my ID before returning my card. I appreciated that, sort of, as it had been close to half an hour since we'd been there.
The next day Liz checked our account online and noticed two charges at this store. I immediately called the store and spoke to the manager who confirmed that the previous night one of the tills did not balance, to the amount billed to my card. The clerk obviously felt he could bill $50 to my card then remove $50 from the till and all would be good. It wasn't. On the night before Christmas the clerk responsible was fired, or at least the manager said that's what would happen.
This morning at the local Post Office I picked up a large parcel and bought quite a few stamps (around $20 worth) which I paid for with my credit card. Having several items to pick up I didn't immediately realize that I hadn't received my card back from the cashier. It was only when I got home and looked in my wallet for my card that I realized I hadn't got it back. I called the Post Office (1-800-ASK-USPS) and was transferred to the cashier who'd served me. Almost as soon as I started to mention that I hadn't received my card the cashier butted in, a little too quickly IMHO, and insisted that she'd given it back to me. I said my card wasn't in my wallet and she told me to look again. I explained that I had my wallet open in front of me right now and that the slot where I keep my credit card was empty. Again, a little too quickly for my liking, the cashier said she'd spoken to the other girls and that none of them had seen a credit card either. She then asked for my phone number (first time a girl's ever asked for my number ;) and said if my card turned up she'd give me a call. Feeling not just a little bit suspicious about the cashier (me thinketh the cashier doth protest too much) I immediately called my bank and reported my card as stolen.
It was only when I looked in the bag of stamps that I realized rather than hand my card back to me, the cashier had put my credit card inside the bag with my stamps. So she was telling the truth, she was just a rather arrogant clerk.
This evening Liz received a call from my credit card's fraud protection agency because they wanted to verify suspicious activity on my account. Despite the fact that I had not lost my credit card at all, somehow someone ran up $770 worth of purchases at two separate stores in ILLINOIS while I live in Southern California!!! Ok, so I have been to Chicago, but that was for about one week in September last year. Somehow, someone used my credit card (or at least the number) to make two purchases at two separate stores in Illinois.
The only thing I can think of is they either made the purchases online (which scares the hell out of me, but at least that's trackable, items have to be delivered to someone, somewhere, right?) or (even scarier) tech-savvy thieves created a very good fake Visa card using my credit card number and someone else's name, which was actually pysically used at the two stores.

Let's go Phishing
MailFrontier.com have created a new "Spot the Fake Phishing email" test.
If you're here, reading this, chances are you're a net-savvy guy or gal. Chances are you have an email account, a paypal & ebay account, and even an online banking account.
If you're here reading this, and any of the above apply to you, then it's in your best interest to take MailFrontier's latest test and see if you can tell which are legitimate emails from real companies and banks, and which are Phony Phishing emails.
I took it and got 5 of the 10 right. Fortunately I'm a little jaded, so my wrong answers were all critical of legitimate emails, which means I'm less likely to be taken in by Phishing emails, but it also means I'm likely to ignore emails sent by companies I actually do business with.
So I registered online and downloaded their Loader Program, then logged in only to find that what with it being a Friday morning, there was no-one playing. A couple of games had 1 or 2 people waiting, but as most of the Hold'Em games required 10 players, there were no games on, or even looking like being on any time soon. At least no Free games ;)
There were quite a few Pay-to-Play games going though, and I saw people dropping thousands of dollars like it was play money. That's the problem with gambling of course, you're never using real money. I mean you are, but online it's just numbers on your screen, and in the casinos it's just chips, so it's very easy to gamble away a lot of money in no time at all.
I got up this morning and logged in and this time there were several games going, so I got into a free game of Hold'Em and was eliminated maybe halfway through the game. By this time Liz was up and looking over my shoulder. She ended up using her PC to create an account and got into the action as well. When sitting at our two PCs we have our backs towards each other, which made it easy to play and not cheat. Of course if one of us folded, then we'd see what the other had :P
Well, it came down to four of us in the game, Liz & I, and a rather chatty guy (yes, you can chat as you play) and a fourth guy, both of whom seemed to be pretty good players. The fourth guy went All In on several hands and won by default when we all Folded. Of course the Chatty Guy (CG) made a comment that the All In guy never went All In when he, CG, had a good hand.
The very next hand the All In guy went All In yet again. This time I called his bluff and went All In myself. My courage was boosted by the fact that I had an Ace High Straight ;) The pot became mine and the All In Guy was eliminated. I now had about $5,000 (of Play Money ;) while Liz and CG had around $1,500 each.
We played for a while, and I threw Liz a pot of a thousand or two to help her out against CG, which was a mistake, because all of a sudden Liz was up around the $5,000 mark and I was sliding out the back door. I think CG was starting to lose interest because, he said, he was also registered in a Big Tourny scheduled to start in 15 minutes. A couple of hands later I thought I had a decent pair of cards, and CG and I ended up going All In...against Liz who had a Full House, or something else bloody high. Whatever she had is irrelevant anyway, all we need to know is that my honey took the win :)
Now she has a Winners Point, or something like that, which lets her buy into a Cash Tourny where she has a chance to win real money, like $500 or so :)
Man, it was a lot of fun. Way more fun than watching it on the TV :D

Yay! It's another 3-day weekend!
I switched my RDO, which was meant to be next Wednesday and which would have given me a 5-day weekend over Thanksgiving, with tomorrow, Friday.
So now I have a 3-day weekend, starting right now, tonight :)
Of course next week, instead of being just a two day week, will now be a whole three days long :P
I'll still have a loooong (4-day) weekend over Thanksgiving though :)

Recap of another looong weekend
A minute of silence is had at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th
month, in rememberance of those who gave their lives that we may be free. The
rest of the free day was spent playing video games :)
The evening was spent at Dave & Busters with Liz's relatives, some from L.A.,
and some who'd flown in from out-of-state...and boy, were their arms tired!
:P
This was also Amber's first major public appearance and she handled it with
grace and aplomb. We had great food at D&Bs, lots of fellowship and fun with
the video games and skill games. The kids all won cool prizes. While the
video games at D&Bs are more for adults (or older gamers) I much prefer the
prizes the kids can win at D&Bs to the little plastic cars and their ilk from
Chuck E. Cheese. It also seems that one spends less money at D&Bs to win the
prizes.
Friday JE and I met up with Liz's cousin, her husband and their two kidlets
at DisneyLand, which has changed a lot since I was there several years ago.
Now there's an exit from the carpool lane off the 5-South (and probably the
5-North as well) which dumps you straight out at the entrance to D-Land
parking. After having our bags searched we were allowed to enter D-Land, and
after wandering around the park, and standing in line for an hour for a
2-minute ride, we finally wound up in Toon Town. There I took JE's picture
with Mickey & Donald.
We had to line up outside Mickey's house for what seemed like half an hour to get this photo.
Donald, being less popular (poor guy), stood outside in Toon Town,
in the cold, and practically begged us to take this picture.
Not really, but there were just a few kids in the very informal line for Donald. JE was in line for less than a minute to meet Donald, who was also signing autograph books for the kids who had them. JE asked me why Donald didn't give him a book and I had to explain that the kids had given the book to Donald, who'd written his name in it then given it back to them. Good answer, right? Wrong. JE then asked, So why don't I have a book for Donald to write his name? Good question, no good answer. Next time, son, next time.
After battling traffic on the 5-North, cutting across Rosecrans to the 605, then battling traffic there, we finally made it home, picked up Liz and Amber and headed for Liz's parents' house where we once again had dinner with the relatives (whose arms weren't so tired now :P)
Saturday morning was JE's usual swimming class, followed by a few errands, inc. a visit to Toys-R-Us. Then there was a casual, relaxed lunch at home with just the four of us. Of course dinner was once more with the in-laws and the rel's, this time at a local favourite Chinese hangout where we managed to be the absolute last patrons left in the restaurant. The owner and his wife were actually balancing the till when we finally left :)
Sunday we picked up JE from Church before the in-laws could take him to see a very sick (possibly contagious) great Uncle & Aunty, followed by breakfast/lunch at the Monrovia Family Restaurant. No, it wasn't brunch. It was our first meal of the day, eaten at noon :P I surprised myself by eating like a total pig, consuming not just my polish sausage & two fried eggs with breakfast potatoes, but the two pancakes JE decided he didn't want, as well as my english muffin, all washed down with about 6 cups of coffee :) It ended up being my one meal of the day, although I did snack later that evening.
Xinh dropped around after lunch and after we managed to get JE napping, Ju-on:The Grudge was put on. Really, I don't know why Liz did rent it, because she really did watch it (or not watch it) with her hands over her eyes for darn near 90% of the movie. I found it very disjointed, akin to a Quentin Tarantino movie, with the movie shown in chapters, each chapter being dedicated to one of the players. Sometimes scenes from one chapter would emerge in another chapter to bring the story together, but when the movie jumped ahead about seven years in time it became rather confusing until we realized the 15 year old girl was the 8 year old girl we'd seen earlier. A couple of other things just didn't make sense. If the ghosts are haunting the house and killing people who enter the house, why do they let some people live for several years before killing them, while other people are killed almost as soon as they set foot inside...and why do some people who never go near the house get killed? And why do some people get killed inside the house, and others are killed in their own homes, or their place of work. And why are some bodies found but others just disappear? And, and, and...ok, so it was still a very good, scary movie, although Xinh says the American version was the better of the two. From the sounds of it, the American version had the better editor.
After Ju-on we put on Scooby Doo 2, which was an enjoyable, albeit predictable movie. Nothing to write home about, just something to waste a good hour and a half on ;) JE woke up shortly after Scooby Doo started so he watched it with us. Better than watching Ju-on which is, of course, why we made him take a nap :)
I had a dreamless night Sunday night, although rumor has it that everyone dreams, just some people are unable to remember their dreams, so I guess I did dream but nothing worthy of remembering the next morning. What did happen Monday morning was a little freaky. While getting ready for work I heard that horrid creaking/croaky sound made by the dead mother in Ju-on. Fortunately I realized it was JE (or Liz) grinding their teeth in their sleep, but for a second or two it scared the living bejeebus out of me.

Ju-on, and other misc. stuff
We got Ju-on:The Grudge yesterday from Netflix. Liz watched maybe the first 10 minutes tonight before asking me to turn it off :P
It's bloody hard to get back into work after taking two weeks off. Fortunately this week was just three days long; now I have a 4-day weekend :)
Next week is a 5-day work week :(
I only have to work for two days during the Thanksgiving Week :)
JE wanted to play one of his older games which would only run under Win98. I'd already installed XP Pro on his PC. I reinstalled Win98 and his computer stopped working again :(
A hi-speed pursuit passed us on our way to the mall, fortunately it was going the other way. It was pretty cool :)
A coworker saw a replica set of Hanzo Hatori swords, from the "Kill Bill" movie, in a store in Chinatown. They cost just $ 59. Liz won't let me buy them :(
Mario Power Tennis for the Gamecube came out today. Liz wouldn't let me buy that either :P

I should have known I was dreaming
I was sitting in a coffee shop with a few friends when I turned and saw who was sitting to my immediate left. It was Jonno. I nudged the friend to my right (no idea who that was) and stage-whispered to them, "Look who it is, but he shouldn't be here."
Jonno has been dead for almost 15 years now. He's appeared in my dreams a few times since he died in 1991, and every time he does I'm aware that I'm dreaming, because even in my dreams I know he's dead. Last night I didn't realize I was dreaming, but I still knew Jonno was dead. Sometimes it upsets me when he's in my dreams, because I want to talk to him, but I rarely get the chance. We usually exchange a word or two before I wake up or something happens and he disappears.
Last night we shook hands and had a brief conversation. I have the impression that he told me he was doing well. We spoke very briefly, just a few sentences passed between us, before I either woke up or the dream changed.
I wonder, was I really just dreaming about Jonno, or did he actually stop by and visit me, just to say hello.
I was tossing out a bag of trash this morning when I made a cool find; someone had thrown out their old PC, which promptly became mine :) It was a Pentium-III w/ no Hard Drive, but it still had a Soundcard AND a 56x CD-Rom. Further delving into the box's innards turned up three 128Mb Ram sticks. One was PC100 and two were PC133. Obviously no-one told the previous owner of this box you shouldn't mix PC100 and PC133 Ram.
I dropped in our old hard drive and video card and powered this box up, and it was the funniest thing. For several long seconds it made these funny whining sounds, then there was this pop and a flash from somewhere inside the box and the delightful smell of ozone slowly permeated the air.
Of course I immediately pulled the power plug from the box. I think the flash came from the Power Supply so the Motherboard and CPU could still be ok; it's possible I could still salvage this box yet. Although I'd have to buy a new case & power supply and do a total rebuild, swapping over everything from the old box into the new one, only to find out it still doesn't work. I did pull the Ram from this box and dropped it into JE's computer, which hadn't been working for a while, not since I attempted to upgrade it to XP :P
Of course when I pulled the old Ram out of JE's box I realized the problem was quite probably that his box only had 128Mb of Ram in it, and XP wouldn't have liked that one bit. Still, even with 256Mb of Ram, his box still wouldn't boot. I switched out his hard drive for another one I had on hand and it booted up just fine. So I formatted that drive and installed XP on it for him. Now that his PC works again maybe I can get my PC back. It's a waste for him to be playing Clifford (yes, the Big Red Dog) Adventure on my 2.4Ghz machine when I could be playing Doom III...or at least I would be if it didn't scare the living BeJeebers out of me :P

Mini-Golf
For the last couple of months JE and I have been hitting the Links at the local Mini-Golf Course. Initially the club he was using was my old putter which I cut down for him so it was more his size. When SportsMart opened a new store at the Santa Anita Mall, Liz popped in with JE and saw they had little JE-sized putters. I returned to the store with her the following weekend and we bought JE a miniature putter.
When we hit the Links that weekend JE kept wanting to hold the putter the wrong way. He wasn't trying to hit it lefty, but he was gripping the putter with his right hand above his left, which is a left-handed grip. I attempted to correct him and was told in no uncertain terms that he'd hold the putter how he wanted to. Turns out that at Sports-Mart the previous week Liz had showed him how to hold the club, and as she's a lefty, she had him using a lefty-style grip.
I finally got JE holding the club the right way and his putting has definitely improved. He's actually nailed a couple of hole-in-ones and even beat me on a few holes.
This weekend he came darn close to beating me. Sure, I gave him a couple of mulligans on those holes which require an initial uphill putt into the windmill's door, and where a missed shot rolls back down past the teeing area and off the back of the fairway. A few of the volcano holes had us both beat and we were forced to score the maximum of 6 several times, when every putt would roll up into the volcano's crater, and through and out the other side, time after time after time.
At the end of the day I had him by two strokes, but he'd still beaten me on several holes. I did finally nail the putt on the "hole-in-one" 19th hole, ringing the bell and winning a free game the next time we play. About time too :P
