A New Outlook

03:08 p.m. Monday, February 12, 2001

As some might know, I don't update this page alot. However, I do update the movies and music page pretty consistantly. So, here's what I'm going to do: Since I never add many entries here because of my never-knowing-what-to-write-about syndrome, I will leave my ENTIRE site to be based around entertainment. Thus, this page (the home page) will just be used to write critiques, tidbits, etc.. about entertainment (i.e. music and movies). Some might have to do with my life, some not. I just think it'll be better than inconsistently thrying to muster out something that happened to me on a particular day. So, basically, this page will serve as entertainment also, for those of you ALREADY finding it boring! The poll will also stay on this page and mainly revolve around this category as well. This gives my page more of a THEME rather than two pages on entertainment and then one consisting of GOD-KNOWS-WHAT. Maybe, to add to the entertainment value, I will place funny stuff here, or, as I call them: Humorous Quips, also known as (when I don't want to sound like a nerd in fear of being beaten up): "Funny Stuff". I think this change will make this site better and more entertaining, though I still probly won't update much. Oh, and that header (introduction) MUST GO! It makes me sound like someone with thick-rimmed glasses, platform shoes, and an inhaler-dependability.........WHAT? Anyway, that's about it. Hope this change suits those who come here (Yes, all THREE of you).

Movies, Movies, Movies

01:06 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2001

Well, I just finished doing 4 consecutive movie reviews! Man, I'm tired. Too many movies! And to think, I still gotta' see The Pledge and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (which will probly be later today). Anyway, I hope those reviews serve somewhat of a purpose. Since I'm not a "professional" critic, I can't get 'em out right when the film comes out, but hopefully a few people find some insight in 'em. And if nobody does, who cares? I like writin' 'em. So, so long for now. I'll try to catch up on my Music page later, since it is WAY behind. Man I love slackin'. (Yeah, like this is an obligation... I wish!) Wait.. no I don't. Wait... yes I do.. if money was involved. I'd do anything if money's involved. Please, no suggestions!

The Golden Globes

10:51 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2001

I've always liked the Golden Globes because they never have a host (which can be a blessing OR a curse) and they don't have crappy jokes written for the presenters by the heavily eccentric Bruce Vilanch. They just come out, present the categories and the nominees and give out the awards. The setting's also neater as the people sit comfortably around tables, finishing up their dinner. Also, the Golden Globes don't focus on a certain genre of movies but split them up into categories of "Drama" and "Musical or Comedy" (although, rarely are there musicals in this day and age.) This goes for both movies and actors and actresses (thus not discriminating against the genius likes of Jim Carrey). The only flaw with the Globes is that sometimes, like every awards show, they get the results awfully wrong. Of course, this can be construed easily as one's opinion. Even though this year's awards show was entertaining and very fair to many movies as no one movie got the most trophies, the results seemed to be off. What follows is a list of who won with commentary on who I would have picked and why:
Best Picture: Gladiator This was the biggest mistake of the night. Even though Gladiator was a good movie, it clearly did not come close to the likes of what it was up against. It's spot in the nominations should've been replaced with the likes of Requiem for a Dream. The winner SHOULD HAVE been Traffic. That clearly is the best movie out of those nominated.
Best Actress: Julia Roberts Yes, I am happy that Julia won, and she would have been my second choice, but obviously the Hollywood Foreign Press didn't pay close attention to Ellen Burstyn's fine performance in Requiem for a Dream. That, in my opinion, was truly the performance of the year, be it male or female. I'm sorry, Julia, but somebody was better.
Best Actor: Tom Hanks I didn't mind Hanks winning. I havn't seen Cast Away, but from what I've heard, he's supposed to be great. However, there are probably many people that would argue in favor of Michael Douglas's performance in Wonder Boys.
Best Director: Ang Lee I knew this man would be tough competition, but I think the Globe should've gone to Steven Soderburgh for Traffic (he was also up for Erin Brokovich). Soderburgh is one of the best director's out there and probably one of my favorites of all time. What he did with Traffic was just amazing.
Other than that, no other complaints from me. I agreed on most of the other decisions. Benicio Del Toro for Best Supporting Actor was a good move, as was Kate Hudson. I was in total agreement on the decisions for the "Comedy" films Renee Zellwegger clearly deserved it, as did Almost Famous. As for George Clooney for O Brother, Where Art Thou? it was just cool to see him go up and be a smartass, although he deserved his statue too.

Best of 2000

12:08 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2001

Man, I havn't updated for more than a month! That's because I just havn't felt the need to. But now I finally am because, now that 2000, is over, I must reflect upon it and post my lists for the best of the year, both in movies and music.
First off: Movies
I didn't go to the theater as much this year as I have in years before, and this was even the first year I could go alone to rated R films! That can only mean that 2000 was a mediocore year for cinema. There weren't many movies that I felt the need to hurry down and see. Thus, instead of a Top 10, I have created a Top 5 list. True, there wasn't a large amount of good films this year, but the ones that were good, were VERY good. My Top 5 is as follows:
1. Unbreakable
2. The Cell
3. Almost Famous
4. Nurse Betty
5. X-Men and High Fidelity (tie)
Sadly, the bad part about living in Salem is that movies made in 2000 with "Top 10" (or 5 in this case) potential aren't released until the first weeks of Janruary of 2001. Such films include "Traffic" (Jan. 5th) and "Requiem for a Dream" (coming to Salem Cinema soon). So, let it be known that either of these movies probably would've found a cozy spot in my Best of 2000 list.
Now, on to Music! This year was a pretty good year for music, as long as you didn't watch MTV! That station just plain sucks now! It was a so-so year for rock as many new bands emerged with next-to-none originality (Linkin ParkPapa Roach). Then there were bands who actually were original such as Glassjaw, Mudvayne, and Disturbed, all providing amazing debuts. I bought so many albums this year that I am sad to have not included them on my list such as Marilyn Manson's "Holy Wood", Rage's "Renegades", One Minute Silence's "Buy Now... Saved Later", and Nothingface's "Violence". But, as reluctant as I am to not include these, I believe that I have finally decided on a worthy Top 10:
1. Ultraspank "Progress"
2. Finger-Eleven "The Greyest of Blue Skies"
3. Project 86 "Drawing Black Lines"
4. Deftones "White Pony"
5. Cold "13 Ways to Bleed on Stage"
6. Travis "The Man Who"
7. (hed)pe "Broke"
8. A Perfect Circle "Mer De Noms"
9. Radiohead "Kid A"
10. Spineshank "The Height of Callousness"
There, now you have my lists of the best of 2000! I will try to update more often from now on, but, hey, it probably won't happen! Have a good year everyone!
-Trevor

Fantastic!

I Hate Feeling Like a Leech

09:08 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 2000

Leeches are the worst animal, in my opinion. They just stick on you and are hard to get off. That's what I kinda felt like today at work. I work with Adam and today it seemed like I was always getting in his way, like helping customers (well, just one actually) that he was already helping and, one time, one of my friends was buying some DVDs and I asked him why he hadn't yet got a Replay card while Adam was ringing him up. Adam, being the extremely good worker he his, would have undoubtedly sold him one if I wouldn't have piped in. I kinda felt bad about that. I mean, I didn't do this all day, just a couple of times without even thinking about it, then when I look back on it, it seems worse than it really might have been (you know how those things go). Anyway, I just felt bad about that, so I wanted to get it off my chest by writing this. I might be blowing it out of proportion, I might not. However, it does seem like whenever I work with Adam, I do a better job at customer service. He's the best person I've seen at customer service in the two years that I've worked there. I can't remember if I was ever that enthusiastic when I first started. (Needless to say, i'm kinda sick of working there. Thank GOD that I like everybody I work with). Oh well... just thought I'd get that off my chest.

No Time!!!

10:32 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2000

Yeah, I know I havn't added an entry for awhile, but I just don't have much to say and little time to say it in. I do, however, have a couple updates on my movies and music pages. Check those out! I'll try to put something here in a little while.

Stranger Things Do Happen, But Not Very Often

11:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2000

Okay, something weird happened tonight. At work (Suncoast in the Salem Center Mall), a person was looking at the DVDs and he asked me a question about widescreen. I get those alot, so I helped him, noticing that he looked uncannily like the guy from the awesome film American Movie (he looked like Mike, Mark's best friend). Now, for those of you who havn't seen the movie of which I speak, it is a documentary about an independent filmmaker from Wisconsin and the troubles he goes through in order to strife to make his "American Masterpiece". Now, this guy in the store looked EXACTLY like Mike, except a little skinnier and with shorter hair.. I mean his face was an almost identical match! I just disregarded it and figured it as a strange coincidence. But then, after talking to him for a bit, he laughed, and his laugh was EXACTLY like that of Mike's. I mean EXACTLY! (And for those of you who've seen the movie, you know that Mike's laugh is far from normal). So at that point, I just flat-out asked if it was him, but he said he wasn't and didn't even know what I was talking about. Then, I showed him the picture on the American Movie DVD cover, but he just seemed to ignore it like it was nothing and just continued to ask me questions. I almost believe that it actually WAS him and he just didn't want to be recognized. (But why wouldn't he?) In reality, I know that it probably wasn't him, but, MY GOD!, I don't think anybody could tell the difference! Needless to say, I was pretty freaked out by this extremely uncanny experience!

TV good! Mmmm!

10:53 p.m. Monday, November 6, 2000

Well, this season, thankfully, there's some pretty good new shows on TV. Usually all the new shows tend to suck large butthole, but this year, it's a little different. My favorite new show and, frankly, one of my favorite of any shows, is "Ed", about the bowling-alley-lawyer. That show is superb and very entertaining, funny, and sweet-natured. Anyone who hasn't seen it should see it soon! The only problem now is that it's on the same time as one of my all-time favorites, "The Simpsons". So, now, I tape "The Simpsons" and watch it later that night or the next day. (The season premiere was freakin' hilarious!) "Boston Public" is another cool new show. Can David E Kelly do anything wrong (let's just pretend that "Snoops" never happened!) There are now three, count 'em THREE David E Kelly shows that I watch each week: "Ally McBeal", "The Practice", and now "Boston Public". That man is just a genius! Ok, so none of the new half-hour sitcoms are that great ("Cursed" and "Normal, Ohio" were ok, but "The Trouble with Normal" and "Madigan Men" are just NOT FUNNY.) It sucks that those two shows sandwich "Norm", probably my favorite live-action sitcom starring one of my favorite comedians, Norm MacDonald. Oh, and "Freakylinks" looked ok, but then, after I watched it, I groaned at how lame it was. However, FOX does have another cool show in "Dark Angel". That show is really cool and could Jessica Alba be any better looking? I think not. Well, that's about all the hot air I can muster for now. Please take the time to vote on the new poll, if you can. Thanks.

The Flaming Thinks

03:25 p.m. Tuesday, October 31, 2000

Last new years I spent the night at my friend, Matt's house (Matt is the singer and guitarist of the Salem band Namic, in case any of you have heard of them). Anyway, my friends Andrew, Tyson, and Nate also were there and we decided to do a radio show of some sorts with Matts' various electronic and recording equipment. So, during part of the show, there was a musical guest called The Flaming Thinks (based on the shirt I was wearing at the time). It just consisted of Matt on acoustic guitar and me singing some jibberish into the mic. Anyway, it's something we always look back on and laugh at cause it was kinda funny. Recently Matt converted the song to mp3 file. I'm gonna post it on my site for you all to (hopefully) enjoy. It's only 1:15 long, so it shouldn't take up much space. And don't mind the kazoos towards the end... Andrew and Nate did that for some reason and it sounds lame. I'll keep it as a permanant download on my Music page too. Thanks! Just click on this to hear it: The Flaming Thinks-neeeah

Woo-hoo!

Yea, my site reached the 500 hit mark! That's cool! Course, Doug has about 2000 already and he put up his counter the same day as me. Hmmm, i wonder who gets more hits per day? Oh well, for right now, i'm just happy with 500.
