Just returned from eating Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream for breakfast. I got a special treat: vanilla ice cream right out of the first mix and pumped into a dish. It was one of the best things I have ever tasted- I actually got a little teary, it was so good. One of those perfect mixes of cream and sugar that melts right into the heart, bypassing the tongue. There's nothing online about them, so you'll have to wait until my article is done. In the meantime- eat SGIC! Get it at Larry's, Thriftway, and a zillion restaurants in town. How I am supposed to go swimming with a tummy filled with custard, I don't really know yet. guh.

I am wrapped in many layers of polar fleece, wearing gloves and sipping tea. I think that nice couple of days in April may have been our summer. The tea is organic, and I swear it is more bitter than my regular tea from the same company. For tea happiness, check the sale page on that link: good stuff, dirt cheap.

I just read that the word cunt is being used as an adjective meaning "cool": "those new pants are totally cunt!" This makes me happy, as it has always struck me as a friendly little word, but so many of my hip chick friends really hate it that I am doubtful it will catch on.

I am writing about sandwiches, and have discovered that being online is now a replacement for providing paper takeout menus. Check the Other Coast and Roxy's, if you're curious. And have you ever had a fluffer nutter?

I have thought of a recipe for the next Pillsbury Bakeoff. Will you help eat and test the recipe? I will need some people who don't cook much to cook it for me and make sure the recipe is consistent. Later this summer the testing will begin. You need to like lemon, and be able to keep a secret.

I read a lot of self-help books that I suspect rely on similar techniques to those that are discussed in this piece. Taming the stories down is funny, but it makes me angry. And the "composites"? It's as I've suspected for years; weird to think that it only bothers a few editors.

Ever wonder what's up with daffodils? I didn't think you did, but since I do, you get to learn, too.

Favorite new Southern phrase, other than "jesse helms is in the hospital", is "well, put me through a chipper and use me for bait". Please astonish me so I have an excuse to say it.

Why, hello, Kitty. Meet Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Speaking of Kitty, have any of you read Good Omens? There was a car that recited haiku. Looks like the newest version is on the way.

4.23.02 Not too early to plan for Cinco de Mayo! This is now an annual tradition, and you can register for a mere $65. "It's not too dangerous, macho, manly and stupid for me". When you're done running, you can buy some poo art. Here's a whole town dedicated to southwestern stupidity.

Oh Dear. This is a Library Journal quote for the book I have to review: "Considering that Amen is a graduate of the Oral Roberts University School of Medicine, his position that the brain is the titular "hardware of the soul" is not surprising. His curious blend of religious myth with cutting-edge science targets lay readers, especially 12-step zealots, as well as mental health advocates. Recommended only for public libraries."

Sweetie and I went to Taste Washington yesterday. I think I saw a total of four African-Americans, total. In a crowd of- supposedly- 2,000. I'd say fewer than that, but hard to estimate. A lot of rather elderly women in leather pants. Is that what "wine crowd" means? Leather? I got a neat cheese pen from America's Dairy Farmers; check out their website for neat things about cheese.

For people who like fish, to eat or just to have in the world, check this out. Weird combination of sponsers, for sure. But good strong commitments. I have a little "clip n carry" paper about which fish to eat and not eat.

Oh Dear. School privatization does not seem like a good idea. Should elementary education be run for profit? Especially when it's a requirement of our society? Edison Schools is the major player in privatization; this pdf shows a slightly different story, if you care enough to read the whole thing. The company is traded publicly, so I am sure it'll fall under the same need for constant growth that all public companies do. How long until classrooms have 60 kids each to keep investors happy?

Although I read some of the textbooks, I'm pretty sure I've never taken an econ class. Lately, I've been wishing I had, as there's something I can't figure out: why is it that the stock price of publicly-traded companies is always based on quarterly growth, rather than just earnings? Over and over, (and obviously with Enron,) I've read about companies creating false growth in order to keep their stock price high; when the reality comes out, it's off to bankruptcy court or a "merger". Growth from a tiny company to a larger company is good, but when an already-large company feels forced to lie about growth to keep investors happy, there's something wrong.

I would feel a little differently about the space program if it was partially or entirely funded by this. Send N'Sync to space!

4.17.02 Today is civics class. I love the Constitution, and you should too! Here is the beginning part, which lays out governmental responsibilities. Perhaps more interesting, and shorter to read for you lazy people, is the Bill of Rights. Pay attention to old neglected amendment 10; it reminds us that we have all the power we need to change stuff! Weird! Go use it! This lays out articles 11-27, in addition to the first 10. I think it's interesting that the last one added until after the depression, although it was originally proposed with the first ten, back in 1789. Perhaps congress has been corrupt for longer than we currently acknowlege.

Take Ashcroft down! It occurs to me that many of the guys in power are pretty old; some of them served under Nixon, f'chrissakes. If we hold off on stem cell research until they're all dead, might the world not be a better place? Just a thought.
