Ratbots!I'm sort of sorry I can't find a photo, but perhaps it's for the best.

I was out in the traffic circle today, and saw all sorts of pretty bugs. All sorts of lady beetles, and a couple others that I haven't yet identified. One was rectangular and orangy-red, with long green/yellow feelers. Cute.

A note on the traffic circle: women say "thank you", men caution me about safety. What's up with that? Age doesn't matter. It's getting very pretty, but some jerkhead ripped out a bunch of irises that were about to bloom. Hope they're being enjoyed. Also hope they were covered with cutworms that are destroying all nearby plants as I write this. How rude.

Although years ago when I worked on the Ave, a particular homeless artist would often bring me flowers he stole from someone's yard, and I never tried to discourage the practice. So I guess it's sorta payback. I get tired of that.

If you want to get out of town for a bit, Sweetie and I recommend Snoqualmie. There's a nice little bowling alley, and the falls/river, and a lovely biking trail, and some very good food, which I'll be writing up this week.

I love the idea of catch and release reading. Therese told me about this yesterday, and it's way cool, especially for those of you who are a little tired of book-related commerce.

I'm interviewing the woman who started this company for an article. All female employeees, cool insurance plan, healthy bottom line, and a great idea.

Brothermine has referred to ergonomics as "the science of oppression". When you're a freelancer, it needs a difference name; but whatever it's called, I am once again flunking science. I love my desk, and I have a good chair, but the heights are not especially compatible and the combination either makes my back hurt or makes my left arm go numb. If you have ideas other than cinder blocks or casters to raise the height of my desk, give them to me, please. This Lightner needs a little oppression in her life.

Speaking of oppression, Jihad vs. McWorld is worth a read. Not anything blindingly new, but has some interesting detail about the realities of the service industry and the relationship between capitalism and tribalism.

I am finally almost better. Hurrah.

This seems like something Sweetie ought to be able to do. If you think you can handle it, here is where you can buy the tools of the trade.

Now that all sorts of lovely fresh things are showing up at the market, it's time to grill! We have a crappy $10 grill, and it works just fine. Someday, I will perhaps have one of these. On the subject of vikings, go correct your misconceptions. No horns! Boardgames!

My throat still hurts today, so I had pudding for breakfast. If you want to feel a little woozy, look at this lovely product. I can't wait until the "snacktivity" page is filled in. Snacktivities! The store has a "limited time offer" for a millenium jello mold. hee. Jello!

I'm re-reading Bonfire of the Vanities. When I last read it, I wasn't as well-versed as I am now in market research demographic groups, and am now startled to see how much of Wolfe's character development comes from simply clarifying the labels. I haven't checked out the latest, but I'm curious. If you haven't read his older non-fiction, check it out. Good stuff.

I need to buy a swim cap, but my head is too big for any of the ones I can find. It's a 7 3/4. The largest swim caps appear to be for 23" heads. My swim-buddy Therese bought a swim cap that was too big, and gave it me. It gives me an instant headache, it's so tight. Who are they made for? Are we circus freaks?

My throat hurts. I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday. I learned from my last sore throat that 6 weeks is too long to wait for a sore throat to just go away on its own, and that it is the maximum length of time to wait before serious complications can result from strep. I got a bit of lecture: no one wants totally avoidable rheumatic fever.

I stopped taking the soma a couple nights ago, and have been having fascinating dreams/nightmares since. Sleep is a strange, strange process.
