Bookie McBooks:
Sweet Sweet Music
|
Let's hear it for renegade republicans. Time to bug your senators some more. This is a few days old, but it's great. Go sell everything. Now. This week I feel like Oprah: if I had a national book club, I'd be tempted to cancel it too. Too many bad/dumb books all in a row. Feh. There was a Sweetie Clan reunion thing yesterday. Lots of chat about writing, Sweetie's job, Uncle George's job, Cousin Will's UW experience, John and Nancy's shop,Uncle Bill's job, Cousin Melanie's new venture and Cousin Nate's First Experience with True Love. Apparently, it's leading to a lot of songs. Sad ones, when she doesn't call. Aww. Who better than to write about decadence than yours truly? There are other short bits in the paper, but this is a long bit. Enjoy. I spent a lot of today making cupcakes. If you want to make cake, any sort, ever, than get this book. And Follow! The! Instructions! Carefully! Happy cake. Very easy, and very impressive to people who don't know how to bake cake. Sweetie and I are looking into a tour of the eastern seaboard in early fall--from Boston to Charleston, skipping a few dumb places (all of Connecticut) by train and making a couple of inland trips to my childhood and adolescent homes. Any places we must visit? Or must avoid? Atlantic City is a must; how can we pass up Rome on the Jersey Shore? You read it here first: Jellyfish will someday rule the world. I eat a lot of fruit during this part of the year--all my favorite little stone fruits are fresh and lovely. It makes me notice the stickers more--the ones that I have in front of me right now read "King Jim" and "Prince Jim" (from seeminlgy identical nectarines) "Sweet Mimi", and "Interspecies Plum". I have discovered that I am not the only one who likes them. Not by a long shot. I'm using Brothermine's disk burner to violate some copyright laws for my semi-nieces. It's neat and all, but since it was installed my normally super-reliable machine crashes daily. I prefer to expect and demand little from machines in general, rather than run in to problems. A large condo building is getting surfaced a couple blocks from here. The conversation (and whistles) of the construction workers echo off the building and enter my apartment loud and clear. Today, there is problem that they can't solve, but I haven't heard exactly what it is. A few days ago, I got to here a "SHIT!" followed by a large crash. Funny. To me. At first I thought this guy was another Kevorkian. Looks like he might have started that way and then caved in to temptation. Who among us hasn't wished the death (or at least permanent disappearance) of those who annoy us? I'm sure had I been one of the man's patients, he would've finished me off years ago.I just got another big stack from the library, which reminded me of a recent chat with brothermine about my reading. Apparently, the subject of how many books I read comes up with more frequency than I would have ever thought. Here's a short FAQ: Interesting Fact: my parents actually used to put my reading on restriction: no trips to the library, no "outside" reading until homework was done. It is insanely easy to cheat on that one. Did this happen to anyone else? Someone please help me; I'm hooked on Neopets. I haven't lost my brain entirely. Neopets is just what a girl needs after looking at this patriot act thingy. Um, how did this happen? It sort of seems like they had all these ideas sitting around for a while, "in case of terrorism"--normally, I'd think it'd take months (if not years) to come up with all the details. Ugh. Poor librarians, but this site is pretty cool. It's hard to meet deadlines when there are so many time wasters out there. Check out the games at neopet, that funky music [white boy] at the miniputt, and stop downloading all my files at the gnutella client. If you like salmon, or smoked salmon, I can't urge you enough to try the chum salmon roe. In my day, we called it "bait", but the flavor is remarkable. Spread it on toast or a bagel! Toss it with pasta! Top your QFC takehome sushi with it! Ikura: it's a way of life. A friend is visiting South Carolina, which reminded me of this lovely attraction. It's "a unique amalgam of Dixie and Old Mexico". Please enjoy this remarkably offensive official website. "Pedro and Frans" indeed. Ole! Immediately after finding the official website, I stumbled upon several pages proclaiming that racism no longer exists in this country. What do the "twelve meelion frans" of Pedro have to say about that? Teff! World's smallest grain! Teff is cute and good for you! Go eat some teff! But not the carob cookies; carob is nasty. Hmm. Here's a new way of looking at your favorite team. The Seahawks were "not ranked". Good thing they're getting a new stadium. Speaking of which, what's up with the weirdo flag pole with the giant art-gears? Is it some sort of Disney Stadium? Spokane is too busy being Proudly American to really celebrate the revolution. Mostly, i saw a lot of old people who drove a block in their golf cart to watch a bad jazz band play. It took the band about 2 hours to get the sound fixed. It's nice to be back. Now that corporations have been so busily exporting jobs for the last couple of decades, I'm curious how news like this will be affecting the availability of cheap labor in the future. It would be sort of funny if all those production jobs came back our way, although not funny that the life span is sinking back to 19th-century levels. I think it's a little weird that no mention of southeast asian countries is made in the report--China, India, all of the African continent, but nada on the rest of 'em. I wonder what "more effective prevention measures" will translate too? Internment camps? Technology...allows us-and therefore forces us? This is sort of a dumb piece, but that comment amazed me. Are there other things that we are allowed to do, and therefore forced to do? I mean, I'm "allowed" to clean the cat box. And someone might "allow" me to make this cake, but I'm not going to. Nor would I serve it with "a new pooper scooper" if I ever was to make it. |
