How to get Congress to investigate Enron.

Big news: my orchid is in full bloom. Sorry I can't find a better picture or make you wait a zillion years for it like I had to. I keep staring at it. Is staring bad for plants?

Staring is bad for Jills. Tucker (also known as Good Kitty) has taken to staring at me when I'm trying to sleep. Last night, he made a little nest out of the comforter while I was reading and just sat happily staring at me for a good ten minutes. Very disconcerting. I hope I'm not making my orchid feel the same way.

A nice guy from this company contacted me about my writing last week. It looks like I will be writing for them in the future, as they have clients that need copy and will pay my rates. Neato. I like their design style, and more work is almost always a good thing.

Had plans for a relaxing game of D&D last night, but Brothermine decided to scare us all by turning gray and passing out. Dehydration is a serious bidnits. Perhaps it was the air-tight highrise he works out in. Drink water!

Here are some new-to-me forms of liquid that you should not drink if you are dehydrated. None of you can drink it anyway: Soju is for high-class people.

The Darrington Timberbowl Rodeo is happening at the end of this month. See you there?

The library has great new interface. You only have to log in once, and it's far easier to manage reserves and holds and stuff. Not that anyone cares, but I'm reading my 125th book of the year. Fashionable Nihilism: a Critique of Analytic Philosophy. It's ok.

Last night's film was Sass, and I loved it. Granted, I have a special affection for bank robbers, as apparently do the German people. It's got everything you want from bank robbers: style, a love/hate thing with a good-at-heart cop, tragic love, entertaining break-in scene, and serious bad guys (who are not the folk hero/robbers, of course). If I can find a non-German language web page about the Sass boys, I'll post it--right now, there don't seem to be any.

When you discover a book you wish you'd written, are you angry or happy? Tough call--I'm experiencing a dammit/I love you moment right now with Radio On.

Summer is here, and I am trying not to get a rash. The idea is that if I gradually build up my exposure, I don't have to spend the summer in turtlenecks and long pants and a big hat. While a lack of wrinkles is an acceptable reward, it does get pretty darn hot.

Last night's SIFF movie was Pipe Dream, with the world's angriest man, Martin Donovan. Smart, cute and funny--Cynthia Kaplan was one of the writers and had a small, scene-stealing part as a secretary. She's got a book coming out soon, and I'd recommend it a lot based on the movie. Sort of like a female non-gay David Sedaris? But cuter.

Our apartment, roof fan and all, was horribly hot, so we played scrabble on the patio at the downtown Cafe Ladro. Pleasant, and good for people watching. There seems to be an unusually large number of fashion victims this Spring. I blame Urban Outfitters.

it's hard to hate a doughnut. Isn't that the truth?

Last night, I solved two local problems in one with a single (brilliant) offensive solution. Minorities are desperately needed to donate bone marrow. There's a lot of agitation about south end (read: non-white) schools getting less funding. Duh: Schools agree to match funds raised when people sell their marrow and donate the dollars to the schools. Everybody wins.

This group is cool. Duck! (ha ha- made you duck!) Tom's coworker is the fourth best duck caller in the state--he doesn't compete in the compulsories; he actually goes outside and talks to the ducks. Duck! (heh) I could do this all day.

Saw Tokyo Noise last night; a frantic last-minute conversation between two people behind us was nearly as good as the movie: Woman: OH NO! We're at the wrong theater! We're supposed to be at the Cinerama! Man: Well, we're here for a while. Oh well. Hope it's good. What is it? Woman: I don't know. Oh I can't believe this. Well, it looks like other people think it's supposed to be good.

We did get to see a quite fantastic room in a love hotel, but other than that, there was a lot of pretentious rambling mixed in with some cool stuff about robot research.

I also noticed that every time I hear someone expressing concern and fascination with the idea of total anonymity on the web (you can be a man or woman! you can be any age!), they are over 50 and make it clear that they have no truck with the Information Superhighway. People I know who actually use chat rooms actually seem to do it honestly, in an effort to find people with some of their more obscurely shared interests. Maybe the sexual predators among you just don't talk about it.

Oh great. I'd like to know what consensus said ok to this, and where that 1.8 million came from.

Sweetie and I saw this last night. Even if you're not a huge fan, it's very fun. "Musical Pillows". And a lot from the fabulous Ms. Vowell, who is my new friend-in-my-head. A note to folks with SIFF plans: bring a lumbar support or rolled up towel or something if you'll be in the Broadway Performance Hall.

Time for an Pour-on wax cup beenie summer! Or something.

My smaller orchid is starting to bloom. Its name is the Green Hornet, which was the deciding factor in choosing it. Bzzzz!

Sweetie and I are beginning our fourth year in this apartment, and our fourth year with no rent increase. Hurrah.
