Happy New Year's Everybody!
We are having a beautiful moonrise here, and you can see Jupiter very close to the moon. Check it out in your neck of the woods.
See you next year!

Monday, December 24, 2001, 03:23 p.m. A Visit From St. Nicholas
Well, I just wanted to let you know that my Timex Expedition watch, the one I bought in 1997 just before I visited NZ for the first time, finally blew out yesterday. It has lasted over four years! I did get a new battery today, but will probably get a new watch some time in the new year as the band is about to break, and it is not water resistant anymore since they had to break the seal to put a new battery in. Yep, good times with this watch.

Friday, December 21, 2001, 02:56 p.m. Golden Globe Nominations
Well, let me start by saying that only one movie nominated for best picture drama has even played here, and it started yesterday! You see what I'm up against.
Let me also say I cannot believe Malcolm in the Middle did not get nominated for best comedy, as it is the funniest show on TV right now. And I cannot believe Bryan Cranston did not get nominated for best actor.
OK, that's my two cents. What do you think?
Thursday, December 20, 2001, 06:04 p.m. Cool movie musical site
Well, the Australasian premier of LOTR was held last night in Wellington (no sorry, "Middle Earth). On the national news last night they actually had at the bottom of the screen that the reporter was reporting from Middle Earth. It was pretty funny. I don't know when we'll go see it, hopefully when the hoopla dies down. Nothing I hate more than seeing a movie with a full audience.
Movie info here: one of the theatre chains sells reserved seats, and they always start at the back in the middle. I'm constantly having to go, "No, I want up front in the middle." We had to sit on the front row for Harry Potter, and we were the only ones on the front row until this man and his small child came in, and the man set the small child right next to me, even though the whole row was empty except for us, but the kid was pretty good, and even knew the whole Harry Potter story. I don't think he was even old enough to read yet, but he knew what that invisibility cloak was. Kids - they crack me up.

Well, Wellington has gone LOTR crazy this week, calling itself "Middle-Earth." We're going shopping in Wellington this weekend, so hopefully I can take the digital camera and get a pic of the cave troll on top of the Embassy. I've thought about going down to see the stars for the premiere, but I'm sure everyone else will be there too, and I don't know if I want to deal with all the nonsense.

Happy Birthday Olivia!
Well, on our last day of vacation with Mom, we got up and went here. This was more for me and Simon. We thought it would not be crowded because school was still in session, but no, there was some special deal and a whole heap of kids was there. Then we ate lunch at Wendy's, which they don't have any of in the Wellington region, and it was OK, the Frosty was not as tasty as in the States. Then we went here because we think it's pretty cool, but I think it's way too expensive for what you get to see. Then it was time to take Mom to the airport because you have to check in practically half a day before your flight, but then there is no guarantee you will get on the flight (when you are flying stand-by). So anyway, we hung out there until it was time for Mom to go, and then of course I got upset, but Simon's really good about it, and then we drove straight home, almost eight hours, and got in about 3:00am. Then I spent the last few days of my vacation just chilling out. Luckily the weather was nice that weekend until the rains started for two weeks straight (no, really), but it has been very nice this weekend so that is good. And that is our vacation (or holiday as they say here). Pictures will be posted hopefully some time within the next year.

My moment of zen for today - watching a bee land on a dandelion, and each time the flower would bend down to the ground (it was a pretty good size bee), then the bee would fly off, the flower would pop back up, and it would start all over with a new flower. I could have watched it all day.

OK, Wednesday of our holiday we got up and went to the Agrodome where we saw the Sheep Show (which was actually very interesting) and Simon did this. We then went here to do the gondola and luge. We did not dress up all fancy schmancy to eat there. We went back to Rotorua and had potatoes for lunch, Mom went to an Internet place to check her e-mail, then we tried to show her the Blue and Green lakes but there was no sun, so they looked like regular ol' lakes. Then we had to take a detour to the east coast so Simon could pick up a check from the guy that bought his bike. We stopped here because I wanted to ride in one of the kiwifruit trams, but the next tour was not for another hour, and we didn't want to wait that long. We did have some very nice kiwifruit ice cream though. Then we made it on up to Auckland where we stayed here.

Happy Anniversary Stacy and James!
On Tuesday we got up and went to Wai-O-Tapu. We had to be there at 10:15 to see the Lady Knox Geyser. After touring around this park we went back to Taupo, ate at McDonald's, did a little shopping, then went and rode the Huka Jet, which is always exciting. Then we watched the Dam at Aratiatia open its gates and let some water out, then we watched the gates shut and the water recede. Then we went back to our motel, got changed, ate at Sizzler in Rototua (I haven't found a good steakhouse here. They have good steak, just not with the same trimmings I'm used to), and saw the Magic of the Maori concert. All in all a pretty fun filled day.

Happy Anniversary Terri and Eric!
Saturday, December 8, 2001, 03:52 p.m.
Well, the Monday of our holiday we visited The Lindale Center, stopped by Foxton to see Simon's parents house, and his dad gave us a boat tour of the river, then we ate lunch at a Subway in Bulls, then we drove up through the central north island, and stayed here because it was midway between Taupo and Rotorua, where we would be hanging out for the next couple of days.
Wednesday, December 5, 2001, 05:47 p.m.
Sunday Simon went on a trail ride, and Mom and I went to Te Papa. Then Mom made Thanksgiving dinner that night. Ummm, dressing and pie. Tasty!
Tuesday, December 4, 2001, 10:18 p.m.
Saturday we had lunch at Valentine's Buffet Restaurant in Petone with Simon's whole family, as his sister was over with her family from Australia to attend a wedding.
And we felt this. It was like the house raised up a tiny bit and slammed back down - WHAM! Pretty bizarro.
Monday, December 3, 2001, 05:51 p.m.
Friday we decided to go to the Wairarapa - wine, paua, endangered wildlife. Unfortunately, it decided to pour down rain all day today also. We did get to check out Mount Bruce - very quickly, but we did see some eels being fed, and a tuatara and kiwi, so that was exciting. Also, we got in free there because no one asked us to pay. They saw us walk in, we stood around for a while wondering what to do, then we just walked on outside. On the way back we stopped at the Paua Shell Factory where they make paua jewelry and stuff. We saw the six minute video, and Simon and I decided to check out the factory - pretty much a room with a few people working. Really loud because of machinery going, so they just kind of look at you, and you look at them. We got out of there fast. Had a nice lunch in a pub also. And that was pretty much that day. Mostly spent driving in the rain.
Sunday, December 2, 2001, 03:22 p.m.
Spent the first part of our holiday at the beautiful (and expensive) Wellington International Airport. It was pouring down with rain, and Mom's flight had to go back to Auckland a couple of times. Then we didn't know where she was, Qantas was no help, so we went down to baggage claim - and there she was! Then it took us an hour and a half or more to get home because of wrecks and flooding. That was pretty much the first day.

Hey dudes, we are back from holiday, and it was good. In the next few days I'll be trying to find web sites of places we went so you can see our vacation, and we'll get pics developed soon so you can see those too. Hope everyone else is doing well.

I've had a few people ask me in the last few days what is Thanksgiving, and even though I gave them an answer, I had some doubt that I was telling them the truth. I mean, you learn about Thanksgiving in school, but come on, a lot of what we learned in school turned out to be a stretch of the truth. So here is a site that does back up part of what I told people here. Whew!
Hey, and don't forget the Mrs. Baird's Home Bake Rolls for Thanksgiving dinner. I mean, it's just not Thanksgiving without them!

You know, I can't believe Laura Bush got a heap of publicity about her "decrying Taliban oppression of women" when Mavis Leno and the Feminist Majority Foundation have been talking about it for years. I'm as guilty as the next person for not paying enough attention to it, but I am now. And I guess any publicity about this is good publicity, but come on, give credit where credit is due.

An "Austin Powers" moment:
Vanessa Kensington: "Mr. Powers, my job is to acclimatize you to the nineties. You know, a lot's changed since 1967."
Austin Powers: "No doubt, love, but as long as people are still having promiscuous sex with many anonymous partners without protection while at the same time experimenting with mind-expanding drugs in a consequence-free environment, I'll be sound as a pound!"
Cue "Soul Bossa Nova" now. Yeah baby!

Went to Simon's parents this weekend to celebrate Guy Fawkes but the weather was just crap. We did get to see the fireworks, but only through a small break in the rain. It has rained all weekend, and now the sun is trying to come out, Sunday evening. Damn weather.
