Monday, October 30, 2000 First off, I passed my driver's test, Whoo Hoo! Secondly, I went over to Thomas Cook after the test to get a money order, and a guy was going in right before me (this was about 9:00 in the morning). When I got in there, he was asking the dude who worked there what day it was, how many weeks to Christmas, what day of the week it was, etc. He asked a couple of questions more than once. The Thomas Cook guy answered the questions like he gets those kind of questions all the time. My guess is the guy was abducted by aliens, and had just been released. He had a large slice in the sleeve of his t-shirt, and was carrying his jacket. When I was driving off, he was approaching a woman sitting on a bench, and she was looking at him very funny, so I don't know what he asked her. Weird. Friday, October 27, 2000 One Tree Hill They had to cut down the tree from One Tree Hill today. It had been attacked a couple of times in the past few years, and the winds up there are very high. Simon and I went there the first time I came to NZ, and there really are spectacular views of Auckland from the hill. This is also the same "One Tree Hill" in the song by U2. Hopefully they will get another tree up pretty soon. Thursday, October 26, 2000 I have to get a NZ driver's license since I have been here a year, so I check out what I need to do on the web site, and then go into the AA office to make an appointment for my test (I only have to take a written test). So I go in, and the lady says, "You don't have to make an appointment, just come in." So I take a day off work, and go in. I'm filling out the forms, getting my picture made, etc, and then she goes, "OK, the first time I have for you to take your theory test is Oct. 31." I'm just looking at her like "What?" It was the same woman too who told me I didn't have to make an appointment! Anyway, I guess I wasn't in a bitchy mood, because I'm just like "OK, 8:30 is good." I didn't feel like throwing a hissy fit because that just makes everyone feel bad, but I guess I should have told her, look, I asked you about the appointment, took off work today, and now I have to take more time off. But I didn't. I'll let you know if I pass. Sunday, October 22, 2000 Welp, I've had a pretty good weekend so far - movies, nachos, margaritas (my first in a year - can you believe it!), Halloween decorations, beautiful weather - and it's Labour Day weekend here, so I get a couple more days off! Whoo hoo! Thursday, October 19, 2000 A fun little timewaster One Saturday I was buying our lotto ticket, and decided to buy Simon some "Space Man" candy sticks, because the box was cool. Well, guess what it really was? Candy cigarettes. Yep, they even had red on the tips. I couldn't believe it. Why can't they just make them different colors or something? Why do they have to be candy cigarettes? Enough people smoke here already, not to get babies started on it. Sheesh. On a side note, Simon used to work in the same building with the company that makes the cigarette candy. Tuesday, October 10, 2000 We bought one of those tabletop "relaxation" fountains this past weekend, and we can't decide which is more relaxing - the gentle splash of the water as it flows down the steps of the fountain, or the loud hum of the pump, as it pumps the water up to flow down the steps of the fountain. Saturday, October 7, 2000 Success I carry a copy of the "Emerson" version of this writing in my purse or wallet, and anytime I am feeling sorry for myself, or that I'm not living up to my abilities, I pull it out and read it, and feel a little better. I was very surprised to learn about the original version, although I think I like the one I carry around better. Non stop rain and wind for about three days now, you can hear the river roaring from our house, and we usually don't hear the river. And now Simon has gone out riding his motorbike in this rain!
