Hey, was anyone at the Ranger game Saturday night? 18 innings! And they won! And here's a question: you know how the concession stands start closing up before the game ends, did they have to open back up, or did everyone have to sit there for a whole other game without food or drink? Just wondering...

Oh man, it's been one of those crazy weather weekends - sunny, rain, rain with sun, pissing down rain, sunny, windy, rain, etc. etc. etc. At least it's not cold, just cool.

Dennis was disappointed I didn't put this info into the Poll o' the Week Results e-mail, because it took him "between 5 to 14 minutes" to find it, so here it is. Enjoy:
I know everyone is going to say this, but my favorite Osmond is Dr.
Cornelia Büchen-Osmond, the head research scientist at Columbia University
of New York, AND the Biosphere 2 Center in Oracle, AZ.
Cornelia also was into the development and curation of ICTVdB, the universal
virus database on the Web, under the auspices of the International Committee
on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), Virology Division of the International Union
of Microbiology Society (IUMS). The ICTVdB incorporates the officially
endorsed classification of viruses, gives each an unequivocal decimal
classification from order to isolate, and is linked to genomic and other
relevant databases. Her previous experience in virus diagnosis by electron
microscopy has lead to the extensive use of images in ICTVdB, especially to
illustrate virus morphology and to facilitate identifications. As a
taxonomic database, ICTVdB is continuously under development to take
advantage of new information processing technology (supported by grants from
the US-NSF), as well as the updating of its information content, through
peer review of ICTV Study Groups. The third version of ICTVdB is now ready
for release.

There is an AgResearch site close to where I work, and I guess they were having an ovary conference, because there was a sign outside that said "Ovary Conf." I dunno, that's just funny to me.

Congratulations to Beth for getting practically all the answers right on the Elvis quiz. She did just visit Graceland, so it's good to see she learned something on her trip. Beth is also the only one who answered the Elvis quiz, so thanks for that too Beth. "It's down at the end of lonely street, at Heartbreak Hotel."

Hey, remember Alannah Currie, from Thompson Twins? She lives in NZ, and is organizing a group of NZ entertainers to protest against GE testing in NZ. The article about it is here. They showed a few pics of her in the paper, and she looks great! "Hold me now..."

Happy Birthday Dennis! Happy Birthday Jeff!
Speaking of Dennis, he sent me this site. It's actually quite interesting when you go to the facts pages. But you may not want to look at it at work. Enjoy!

OK, in honor of the anniversary of Elvis' death, Beth suggested we have some Elvis trivia, so here goes:
Where was Elvis born?
What was the first Elvis song ever played on the radio?
How many consecutive #1 hits did Elvis have?
How many movies did Elvis star in?
What does TCB mean?
"Mama's little baby loves clambake, clambake, mama's little baby loves clambake too."

I just learned this week that Mac Davis wrote the song "In The Ghetto." I thought you were supposed to write about what you knew, and I ask you, where is the ghetto in Lubbock? Oh sure, there are poor parts of town, but I never really saw a "ghetto". Just wondering.

Another MTV memory, this time from Jeff the activist:
Okay here is my MTV memory. I was a sophmore in college at Texas A&M and TCI
cable had just taken MTV off their channels. I remember going to the cable
company to protest. When I got to the TCI Cable office, I was suprised to
see over 100 fellow Aggies with signs saying, "I want my MTV". Anyway,
everybody brought food and beer so it was pretty much a big party. It was
the only time that I every protested anything and we finally did get MTV
back.
Wednesday, August 8, 2001 Watch it! Hey, I'm Doris Day.
Blake's MTV memories:
* That 99 Lufballoon song whatever its called. It's the reason we bought a fucking stereo in my house... just to listen to that video be it the german or english version. So I remember when my parents were away and the video would come on mtv I'd crank up the stereo as loud as i could, and walk outside as far as I could while on the phone w/ friends to see just how far i could travel and them still hear it. I know i'm explaining this all like a crackhead on his 2nd day of recovery... but hey
* Videos like pretty much everything Duran Duran did had a huge impact on me. For my 5th grade talent show me and my friends did a whole Michael Jackson rip off of Thriller. We had the costumes and a whole make up routine that brought down the house. We figured out a way to put horror makeup on each other in the middle of everything for great dramatic surprise effect. I think the teacher almost died of a heart attack... in absolute shock. Aparently 5th graders who act like Zombies and Michael Jackson at the same time are going to hell. All our parents were called and I was banned listening to Michael Jacksons record for awhile.
* How could anyone forget that kick ass video for Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl"... mannn i love that video to this day!
* Strangest MTV thing is when they had this concert thing in town w/ Guns N Roses, Inxs, Ziggy Marley, Iggy Pop, etc.,... and out during Guns N Roses a whole slew or MTV VJ's/personalities came out and sat close to me... and it was like this brigade of short people who were all about 5'1 tall.
* 1st time seeing Pauly Shore's tv show... I had run into him at Universal Studios & thought what a freak though he had a warped sense of humor enough to make me laugh... so it was strange seeing him on TV w/ a completely different approach to who he was... like a person completely reinvented.

Well, monkey e-mailed me (see link for yesterday) and told me a little more about itself. Seems like a very nice and polite monkey. I will be checking it's website often to see what it's up to. I think you should too.
Saturday, August 4, 2001 Can anyone tell me what this is about?
It's obviously based in Dallas, since I saw pics with Mr. Peppermint, Little Jack Melody, Abby Goldstein, and the State Fair, but does anyone know any more?
Friday, August 3, 2001
Yay, someone else sent me an MTV memory. Here's Beth's:
Hey! My favorite Mtv moment was watching Robert
Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones come together
to play a few old Zep tunes at Live Aid, summer of
'85. Of course, they did not call themselves Led
Zeppelin out of respect for their deceased drummer,
John Bonham. (Trivia: who played drums in place of
Bonham for this event? Hint: there were two
drummers.....).
Anyway, I still have it on the original vhs tape I
used to tape it. I'm such a freak. You know I
remember when it first came on. Bill and I had to
have t-shirts. So, mom ordered red t-shirts with
yellow lettering on them for us. I have a picture of
Bill and I at ages 13 and 11 in his go cart, with our
Mtv shirts on. Good Lord!!! I just remember being a
"slave" to Mtv once it started. And to think some of
those "new" artists weren't even born yet. Brittany -
go home!
Thursday, August 2, 2001
OK, since no one sent me any MTV memories, I decided to share mine. My favorite MTV memory is watching the WORLD PREMIER of "Thriller" by Michael Jackson in 1983. I'm pretty sure I watched it, then Mike came over and we watched it a couple of more times, because I think it played like every half hour that night. Or Mike might not have come over, and we just talked about it at school the next day. I know I saw it more than once that night, and I think someone else was there. Anyway, that's my story. "CAUSE THIS IS THRILLER, THRILLER NIGHT!"
Wednesday, August 1, 2001
"It was twenty years ago today..." that MTV first hit the airwaves. Can you believe it? I didn't see it until the next year, and that was at Methodist church camp. What a loser! Anyway, they took MTV off here, so I can't even see it anymore. Anybody have a favorite video or MTV memory? Lemme know.

Simon, Richard and I went to Stratford this weekend to see Simon's sister Denise. We saw the glockenspiel and also saw the theatre where they showed the first talking pictures in the Southern hemisphere. Then we went to New Plymouth and went to a small zoo there, and saw monkeys and birds and there was a small animal house with rabbits and guinea pigs, etc, and there were some little chicks sleeping on a rabbit for warmth. Aw, it was so cute. Then we drove along the coast in New Plymouth, Richard climbed on this big rock, then we went to a scenic reserve called Meeting of the Waters, which was very beautiful. It is very beautiful all around the Taranaki region, very green and lush, and in the middle of everything is Mt. Taranaki. We were trying to go up to play in the snow, but the snow was too high, so we didn't try it. We also went to a New Zealand Air Force museum today on the way home. A pretty good weekend overall.

Has anyone ever received a forwarded e-mail, and it had a whole lot of names of other people it had been forwarded to (you know, when people don't delete those off), and you saw someone's name that you knew? Just wondering.

Here's a site that lists common kiwi slang and phrases. Just thought you would find it interesting to check out. I haven't heard all of these, but I have heard a lot of them. It's fun trying to figure out what people are saying!
It's been a winter wonderland for the last two mornings, frost all over the place. And pretty darn cold. I'm ready for summer, thanks.

There's a guy at my work who looks like Kenny Rogers. He just turned 50 last week. But I don't think I know him well enough to ask to take his picture.
