Our burning question this week is "What do you call English Muffins in England?" You see, they have what they call "American Hot Dogs" here (not even close), but they would just be called "Hot Dogs" in the States, so we saw a commercial for English Muffins, and wondered what they would be called in England. I asked a dude from work who just came over from England, and he said maybe a crumpet or a pikelet, although a crumpet is a little more rubbery and has more holes in it, and a pikelet is like a smaller, thicker pancake. Then I asked Simon's parents, and they almost got in an argument about it, before deciding that it depended on if you came from the North or the South if you called them crumpets or pikelets. So, it's still a burning question, sort of.???

Cynthia has informed me that the woman who created Nancy Drew, Mildred Wirt Benson, has died. I loved Nancy Drew. I loved her perfect titian hair, her blue convertible, her boyfriend Ned Nickerson, her housekeeper Hannah, her photographic memory, her perfect clothes and shoes, the way she could sniff those mysteries out, sometimes with the help of her lawyer father or her friends, and how she wasn't scared to explore anything. I'm not really into mysteries now, but I sure was then, and I miss them. Anyone else feel the same?

Dennis said he knew the Batmobile question but he had some kind of server problem blah blah blah and he wants credit for it also. So add Dennis to the list for that question.

Flaco Jimenez

Goin' Band From Raiderland

This is from an e-mail my cousin sent me. Thought I would put it on here with my comments:

YOU WERE A LITTLE GIRL IN THE 70's IF:

1. ...you wore that rainbow shirt that was half-sleeves, and the rainbow went up one sleeve, across your chest, and down the other. - No, I didn't own one, but I remember them.

2. ...you made baby chocolate cakes in your Easy Bake Oven. You washed them down with snow cones from your Snoopy Snow Cone Machine. - Didn't have either one.

3. ...you had that Fisher Price Doctor's Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked. After training with these tools you became an expert at the game "Operation". - Again, no, but I did play Operation when other people had it. Not particularly good at it.

4. ...you owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a basket. In the early 80's you moved onto the ever popular 10 speed. Gosh that seat hurt. - Yes, indeedy, I owned the "Miss America". I don't remember any bicycle seat hurting.

5. ...you ever owned roller skates with metal wheels. - Yes, and had the little pom-poms to go on them.

6. ...you thought Gopher from Love Boat was cute. (Admit it!) - No, I wasn't really into guys that much back them, but I was always happy when Gopher got some lovin', because he was so nice.

7. ...you had nightmares after watching Fantasy Island. - This was probably true. It could get a little creepy sometimes.

8. ...you had rubber boots for rainy/snowy days. Your shoes actually fit inside the boots (with a little help from your Mom and some plastic bags). - We had one pair of red rubber boots, and when you outgrew them, you just wore the bags over your shoes.

9. ...you had either a "bowl cut" or a "pixie" (not to mention the "Dorothy Hamill") because your mom was sick of braiding your hair. How traumatic when people thought you were a boy. - Yes. I was further traumatized when I cut my hair short when I was 17, and people would think I was a guy. Probably why I wear my hair long now.

10. ...your Holly Hobby sleeping bag was your most prized possession. - Didn't own a Holly Hobbie sleeping bag, but I did have a Holly Hobbie doll.

11. ...you wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers. - Yes

12. ...you begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon. - No.

13. ...you had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple shredded outfits - I didn't, but someone I knew did because I remember those costumes.

14. ...you spent hours out back on your metal swing set with the trapeze - Yes

15. ...you had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color. - No ribbon barrettes, just barrettes in every color.

16. ...you kept losing your mittens so your mom bought you the kind that were attached by a string. - No, I kept up with my stuff.

17. ...your Hello Kitty pencil case was cuter than anyone else's. - No

18. ...you wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture, and you despised Nellie Olson! - Definitely.

19. ...you wanted your first kiss to be at the roller rink. - No, I don't think I wanted to have to go through a first kiss. How embarrassing!

20. ...your hairstyle was described as having "wings," and you kept it pretty with the comb you kept in your back pocket. - Yes

21. ...you know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends, Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie. - Umm, pie.

22. ...you carried a Muppets lunch box to school. - No

23. ...you and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazard was your boyfriend. - Uh, no.

24. ...every now and then "Its A Hard Knock Life" from the movie "Annie" will pop into your brain and you can't stop singing it the whole day. - I doubt it.

25. ...YOU had Star Wars action figures, too. - No, but I think Laurie had the Princess Leia doll.

26. ...you thought unicorns were real. - Maybe

27. ...it was a big event in your household each year when the "Wizard of Oz" would come on TV. Break out the popcorn and sleeping bags! - Yes, and The Sound of Music, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Parent Trap and any Special Movie Presentation.

28. ...you ever asked your Magic 8-Ball the question: "Who will I marry, Shawn Cassidy, Leif Garrett, or Rick Springfield?" - No.

29. ...you completely wore-out your Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Fame soundtrack albums. - I believe I had Saturday Night Fever on 8-track. I have the CD now.

30. ...you tried to do lots of arts and crafts things, like those weird potholders made on a plastic loom or latch-hook rugs. Not to mention lanyards! - Yes, yes and no.

31. ...you made Shrinky-dinks! - Yes.

32. ...you used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape recorder up to the speaker. - Yes.

33. ...you couldn't wait to get the free animal poster that came when you ordered books from the Weekly Reader book club. - True.

34. ...you learned everything you needed to know about girl issues from Judy Blume books. (Are you there God? It's me, Margaret.) - No.

35. ...you thought Olivia Newton John's song, "Physical" was about aerobics. - Hey, that's what the video showed.

36. ...you wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes or shoelaces with heart or rainbow designs. - Yes to the shoelaces.

37. ...you had Colorforms - We had a Colorform bat from the Scooby Doo Colorform set on our bathroom mirror for years.

38. ...you wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer. - No.

39. ...you had a Big Wheel with a brake on the side and a Sit-N-Spin. - No.
