Who Cut The Cheese?

National Obituary Archive

Hey, our house is really clean right now, if anyone wants to come on down.

I've been having to capture this week at work, as opposed to doing adjustments, which is my real job, and I am missing out on some serious reading time. While adjustments are running I can read, but with capture it's constant work. What a drag.

Lawrence Monoson was the star of The Last American Virgin. Cynthia answered correctly. I know Mike would have known that too, but I don't think he reads my site. I also just read that Lawrence is from Houston. Who knew?

Cynthia and Dennis both got Illinois' State Fossil, which is the Tully Monster. Yes, that's right, the Tully Monster. Are you scared?

Lawrence Monoson was on the episode of Enterprise shown here tonight. Can anyone tell me in which fine '80s teen movie he played the title character? No using the Internet or any other reference tool to find this answer, any student of '80s pop culture should know this immediately.

No Depression - not really what it sounds like

OK, you Dallasites, please read this:

Hello everyone!

Might I take a moment of your time?

I am writing to encourage everyone who lives in Dallas and is registered to vote in Dallas, to come out on Saturday May 4th and vote FOR the Competitive Pay referendum for Police and Firefighters that will be on the ballot. You may have heard a little about this already. Dallas Police and Firefighters are asking for a one time 17% pay raise to make us competitive with surrounding cities. Currently Dallas and Ft. Worth (the two largest cities in the area) rank behind All other surrounding cities when it comes to pay, including Plano, Richardson, Mesquite, Carrollton, Denton, Garland, Euless, Irving, Grand Prairie, Bedford, North Richland Hills, and Arlington. The Dallas Fire Department is ranked in the top 10 when it comes to busiest fire departments in the nation. As a matter of fact, most recently we were 7th in the nation in total number of runs. A 17% pay increase will put us in the middle of the 5 largest area cities, not the 5 highest paying. Granted I have to speak from experience, so I speak from the firefighter's point of view, but the Dallas Police Department are suffering the same predicament. We are losing new recruits at an alarming pace to other cities who court them after rookie school and promise starting pay that is up to 7,500 more than Dallas is paying. (the most recent rookie class of 25 lost 3 to Rowlett). Small potatoes you may be saying, but the city has just spent thousands of dollars to train these individuals to fill vital spots on the department, and then they lose them to surrounding cities. Granted, most likely none of us on the Dallas Fire Department took this job for the money. You won't get rich doing this job. However, it is true that higher pay can be an incentive. I will not say that there is a direct correlation, but Plano is the top paying department in the area, and they have consistently been a top notch fire department, being one of only three cities in Texas to receive the prestigious ISO rating of 1. (This is a rating by the Insurance Services Organization to rate fire departments on their fire suppression. It affects the amount homeowners pay in insurance. A rating of 1 is the best and means lower rates for homeowners. It also means you have a damn good fire department!)

Now, why are we asking for 17% when Mayor Miller and the City Council have promised 15% (5% a year for 3 years)? Well, first of all 17% would bring us up to a competitive rate now. In three years the other departments will in all likelyhood receive raises so our position will remain the same. Second, the City Council cannot promise that we will receive all 15% over three years because they cannot obligate future councils. So who knows if we will even see all of the 15%. Part of Laura Miller's platform spoke of her desire to cut the "fat" from the city budget and find money for important things that need work, like our city's infrastructure. While it is true that many parks and roads, etc. need work, it is my belief that basic city services need to be taken care of first. When you call 911, you expect to have help there soon. I guarantee you if you need fire or ems you will have someone there in less than 4 minutes most of the time. The Dallas Fire Department is understaffed, however, and that can affect response times. The City Council is making it look as though our request is unreasonable. I ask you then to take a look at the next bond package being pushed by the council. For that matter what about the Victory/Palladium project? Remember the American Airlines Center? It's funny that money can be found for things that have some kind of tangible output, but when it comes to Police and Fire, the only time you realize their worth is when you need them, and I am here to tell you that although I love my job, I don't wish for anyone to need us! Do you remember being told that the city was way over budget only 3 months into the fiscal year? Well, you were denied the full truth when you were told that many jobs were cut. The bit of information that was withheld was the fact that many of those jobs were not even staffed! Positions that were not filled!!! I feel like the Chamber of Commerce has jumped on the bandwagon because they would rather any money be used for other purposes, whatever they are, because they have not stated ANY reason for being involved.

A recent study on the fire department's overtime stated that more overtime was paid than it would cost to train new recruits to fill the holes. Does this all make sense? We are working overtime (we do volunteer) because we are understaffed. Part of the reason for being understaffed is keeping recruits and trained personnel!

Will taxes have to be raised? It is possible. It is small however. The projected amount is less than 25 cents a day. With homestead and over 65 exemptions, that amount is less than 5 cents a day. I am prejudiced, but I would be willing to pay this for superior fire and ems service. Do you know that we get calls ALL THE TIME for people who have the flu or people who have "run of the mill" tummy aches, or people who have a small cut on their finger or stubbed their toe? I kid you not. We do not however, discriminate. We don't tell them no, we still respond lights and sirens as if it were life and death. An emergency is defined by the person experiencing it.

Well thank you for letting me rant and rave. I ask you to vote no matter what your opinion and no matter which way you vote. Above all I believe in having a say ( I am a libertarian, it's what I believe). If you don't know where you are registered or IF you are registered to vote, go to www.ci.dallas.tx.us/cso/polls.htm.

I send this out to all of you, my friends, even if you don't live in Dallas, in the hope that maybe you will pass it on if you know anyone who does. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who don't even know or care that a vote will take place on May 4th. I hope for a large turnout regardless of the results. It would let us know how the citizens of Dallas really feel.

Thank you very much for your time,

Saturday, April 13, 2002, 12:17 a.m.

Well, it's after midnight, and I am exhausted, so I'm getting straight to the trivia.

Hello, Larry was the answer for yesterday's question, although I agree with Cynthia in that it was really a cross-over show, not a spin-off. To be a spin-off to me you need a major or minor character from the first show to spin-off as a major character on the second show. Silver Spoons was another cross-over show from Diff'rent Strokes. Cynthia, Dennis and Jeff answered correctly.

Friday's question is: What is Illinois' State Bird?

Man, what a day. Milton Berle and Dudley Moore are gone, and Lyle Lovett was trampled by a bull, but should be OK.

Peter Jackson was on the radio today, and said he had gone up to Paul McCartney at some Oscar do and asked him if it was true the Beatles wanted to do LOTR, and Paul said it was but Tolkein had the film rights then and said no. Peter is a big Beatles fan and was wondering what the soundtrack would have sounded like for that film. Maybe Peter can get Paul to do a song for one of the next LOTR films, instead of sub-par Enya

Kim Hill, the radio host was also asking Peter about who else he saw there, and he said Gwyneth and Mel, and Kim said what a shame about her dress, and Peter said yeah, it wasn't better in person, and she asked about Mel's hair weave, and Peter said he looked good and was aging gracefully. She also asked if it looked like Paul McCartney had had a face lift, and Peter said no, but he did think he dyed his hair. Now, this conversation makes this radio host sound kind of shallow and ET, but she is really pretty good, and the conversation with Peter was cracking me up. I like when people give good interview.

I don't know about there, but here McDonald's is selling a Cadbury creme egg sundae. The picture does not look very appetizing. They are also selling fish n chips. ????

Had schnitzel with mashed potatoes today, and it was almost like chicken fried steak. But no gravy and no homemade biscuits.

I thought the Oscar telecast was a lot classier this year, no leering Jack Nicholson on the front row, and I thought everyone looked great except, and these are the words of my friend Donny, "Gwennyth Paltrow wear a bra for crying outloud." My sentiments exactly. I thought her hair and makeup was good, the bottom part of her dress was good, but the boobs - no. Someone should have told her.

Is it me, or is it not fair for management to come into your weekly team meeting (and my team works hard) and say that "some people" may not be giving their all to the project, and for this reason the incentive probably won't be paid out? Why not just talk to the "some people", why punish everyone else? Please, I would like some response on this. I don't know, it just rubs me the wrong way when you work hard, then someone comes along and says you are not.

Happy Birthday Blake!

Had a good weekend, go to go out to eat Friday, then to the "Fiesta Latina" at the park just across the river from where I live Saturday, which was really mostly Cuban music and dancing. It's always fun to go to free events, just to see the people, especially when there is music and dancing involved. You get your show-off couples, who have obviously taken dance lessons, or who are older and just know how to dance like that, then you have your lesbian couples, then the regular joes who aren't great dancers but who like to dance, then the kids/parents with kids, then there is always one or two "eccentrics", not great dancers, always some weird item of clothing making them stand out, no shoes, usually, and more than likely alone. What's great is when two eccentrics get together.

The Mexican Embassy donated the most beautiful pinata I have ever seen, but the thing was like a rock. I couldn't see the action, but I could hear what sounded like the stick hitting the tree the pinata was tied to. Then they made an announcement that the stick had broken, and they had to get a new one. The kids finally figured out to just hit these little cone things sticking out, and it was broken in no time. Simon could actually hear the kids hitting the thing at our house!

They also had these beautiful flags planted all around the area, and when I got there I wished I had brought the camera to show you. I'll know better next time. All in all a good day.

Well, it turned into one of those afternoons. First, I got a little snappy with a coworker, and had to go apologize for that. Then, I was running this CRS connection for about five other people, in freeze 15008, and another coworker comes over and says I'm running it in the wrong freeze. We stop it, he kind of goofs around with it and asks someone else about it, and the other guy's like "no, don't think that's right, we better find out about it." So I go get my team leader, who says what I was doing was fine. !!!! So then all these other people have been doing nothing waiting on their CRS to be run, so we had to sort it all out so they could just run their own. Then after work I have to go to the pet store to get some stuff for the fish tank, and they don't have what I need, and the lady is telling me I can use this other stuff, and I'm asking her "but does it remove the nitrites?" and she has to admit someone else does their fish and she doesn't know. Hey, you own a pet store - STUDY UP! AND to top off my experience there, someone was buying a kitten in front of me with a bunch of screaming kids playing around. AND she was barefoot, which is pretty much the norm here. They don't have those "No Shirts No Shoes No Service" signs here. I feel bad for the kitten.

On the plus side, it is payday, and I bought us some blankets for winter. Just getting ready early. Enough of my bitching, just had to share.

Hey, so I don't know, nothing's going on here, just work, nothing else really. Time change on Sunday, and I'm not looking forward to that. It is still pretty warm here, and that's just going to be a drag, getting dark when I get out of work, and I get out of work at 4:30! There's some kind of little Cuban music concert at the park right next to where I live Saturday, so I am excited about that. It's free, which makes it even better. OK, I guess that's all for now. See ya.

Man, it is Monday, and I am exhausted, and my neighborhood is eerily quiet. I don't even hear any birds or cicadas. Weird.

OK, no one took a gander at Texas' Official Flying Mammal, which is the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat. We saw a small bat beside a trash can outside that round Holiday Inn in Austin one time on vacation. We took pictures of it. I don't know if it was a Mexican Free-Tailed Bat, but it probably was, because they do live in Austin.

OK, back on Monday with more trivia.

Got my new glasses today. I haven't had a new pair of frames since I was at Tech, and only one update of lenses since then. I don't wear them all the time, just when my contacts are out, but it's good to have an updated prescription, just in case.

Mom got the correct answer for the Official Dance of Texas, which is the square dance. When I was young, very young, a friend of mine's mom made square dance petticoats and dresses and shirts. I thought to myself, "When I get older, I'm going to have me one of those petticoats in every color when I go square dancing." Well, that hardly happened. Will there be a day when square dancing is obsolete? What about clogging? Do you know anyone who participates in these activities? Let me know!

And today's question: What is the Official Flying Mammal of Texas?

Happy Birthday Terri!

Uh, I think I interrupted something going on between the axolotls this morning. I should have put on some Barry White for them, but I don't think they have ears.

OK, Jeff again gets the correct answer for the trivia, with the correct answer for the official dish of Texas, which is chili. I would have voted for chicken fried steak myself, not being a big chili eater, but that's just me.

And the next question is: What is the official dance of Texas?

So Simon got the two axolotls, then he got a big tank, so he decided to get some neons because the axolotls can eat them, and they look good in the tank. And the axolotls did start eating them. THEN Simon decides he wants some catfish in the aquarium, and he goes to the pet store and the lady sells him some catfish and tells him they are scavengers and algae-eaters, and can help keep the tank clean. And Simon got some more neons because they like to live in schools and the axolotls had been eating them. So the next morning A LOT of the neons were gone, and we were like WOW the axolotls must have really been hungry.

So a few days later Simon says he needs to find out if he needs to feed the catfish any type of food, in case there is not enough algae. So while he is out I decide to investigate for myself, and I find what kind of catfish we have, which is the pictus catfish, and that they are omnivores, which means they eat anything they can fit in their mouths, including small fish! No wonder so many fish were disappearing. Simon says he won't buy any more small fish when these are gone, they will just get pellets instead. We think they catfish are too big and too fast for the axolotls to eat, but I keep thinking that one morning we will wake up to find a dead axolotl with a catfish in it's mouth. We'll see.

OK, Jeff again got the correct answer for Texas' State Vegetable, which is the 1015 Sweet Onion. Thanks for playing Jeff!

And today's question is: What is the Official Dish of Texas?

Ever wonder what happened to Pepsi from Pepsi and Shirley and Wham! fame? Well, she's in the South Island of NZ, where her husband wants to open an organic lodge. I heard her on the radio today. Very nice speaking voice. Anyway, just keeping you hipped.

OK, the Texas Facts Trivia is back, and here is today's question: What is Texas' State Pepper?
