Cardiff City Clobber Scunthorpe 4-0, Go Top of the Table

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Alright, I'll admit it. I've gone a bit over the top with my title for this entry. Saying that Cardiff City is top the table after only one game may be a little much. The thing is, though, that it's true, thanks to a rousing 4-0 win over Scunthorpe United at Cardiff City Stadium. Two goals from Michael Chopra and one from Jay Bothroyd had City up 3-0 at the break and a Peter Whittingham penalty in the 90th minute of play secured the most impressive four-goal margin of victory.

Not only did City kick off the new season with three points and a big +4 in the goal-difference column, but they did it on a very special occasion indeed, their very first game at brand new Cardiff City Stadium. Making things even more delightful was the collection of results from around the division. Only two of the other 10 games so far have produced winners, with only City, Derby County and Leicester City picking up three points apiece. Derby and Leicester won by only a goal each so City have just about as big a lead as you're likely to see after one game. You want to say, "They'll never catch us," though it might be best to wait a few weeks before getting too delirious!

There's good reason to be excited about today's big win, of course. The 4-0 scoreline matches City's best-ever opening-day result and this was the 83rd lidlifter in Bluebird history. The only other time City won an opener by such a margin came back on August 18, 1951, when the club pasted Leicester City 4-0 at Ninian Park. City would go on to win promotion to the First Division that season, their first back in the top flight in 23 years.

In his match report at his Bluesy's Blues blog, Nigel Harris summed up the day as a "superb afternoon, brilliant entertainment and what a start to the season." He added, " A great start in which every man played very well although Whittingham wasn’t that influential, Hudson could be a concern against better attacking sides. On the plus side, Quinn had an excellent match but the plaudits today should go to our attacking talent who put Scunnie to the sword."

Paul Davies, in his report at Urban75.com, rhapsodised wonderfully as follows: "Exceeding the wildest hopes of even the most driven and deluded optimists, Cardiff City officially unveiled their new stadium and kick-started a new era with a perfect display of at times dazzling football which tore the game but hapless Irons to shreds in a torrid 30 minute maelstrom." As usual, Mr. Davies's report comes complete with a fine set of pictures from the ground and environs (like that sad shot of Ninian Park, which by the looks of it must have suffered a very rough summer indeed).

The Wales Online report, penned by Simon Kendal-Williams, offers this: "Four goals, some delightful football, a bumper crowd – heck, even the weather was perfect. City’s new home could not have wished for a more emphatic baptism." This report includes a sharp set of a dozen shots of the occasion. Check it out.

Speaking of pictures, City fans have posted some awesome sets of photos from the glorious day. Try here here and here.

A few more sets of stats before signing off. Ready? Here goes:

* This is the first time City have netted four in an opener in 24 years. The Bluebirds beat Notts County 4-1 at Meadow Lane to kick off the 1985/86 season. It's only the fifth time City have scored as many as four goals in an opener. The previous four occasions include a 5-2 win at Stockport County to open the 1920/21 season, the aforementioned 1951/52 lidlifter, a 4-4 home draw with Newcastle to begin the 1962/63 campaign, and that 1985/86 win at Meadow Lane.

* In scoring twice in an opener, Michael Chopra becomes the 12th Cardiff City player to net two in a season opener. No City player has had an opening-day hat trick, though Chopra came oh so close to becoming the first today. Jimmy Gill is the only Bluebird to net two twice, in 1920 and 1923. Others to turn the trick include Hughie Ferguson (1926), Ralph Williams (1930), Alex Hutchinson (1933), Wilf Grant (1951), Johnny McSeveney (1955), Barry Hole (1962), Brian Clark (1971), Derek Showers (1976), and Tony Bird (1995).

* Here's one more vaguely interesting stat. Today's win gives City 23 opening day wins to go with 30 draws and 30 defeats. For the decade, they close accounts with a record of 6-2-2 (wins in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2009). This means that City have collected 26% of their opening-day wins in this decade!

Predictions for the New Campaign

Friday, August 7, 2009

How will Cardiff City fare this year? After missing out on a playoff berth by the smallest-imaginable margin last season, you've got to believe City should be among the contenders for a playoff spot this time around. The big papers would seem to agree. The Guardian, The Telegraph, and The Times all have City in the hunt for a top-six finish.

Here are some details:

* The Guardian's section on City begins by noting that "Ninian Park makes way for the imaginatively named Cardiff City Stadium, a new venue for Jones' ongoing struggle to balance selling his best players with massive fan expectations. Will the team be over the disappointment of missing out on last season's play-offs?" They sum up City's prospects as follows: "Prediction Play-off potential."

To see the sections on City and the other 23 clubs, go here.

While we're on the subject of the Guardian, John Ashdown, another writer for the paper, holds forth with his own predictions (for all three tiers of the football league). City fare better in his view, as he foresees a spot in the playoffs. Here's what else he has to say:

"Cardiff have lost the influential Roger Johnson to Birmingham and replaced him with the less reliable Mark Hudson, but more important could be how the club respond to the luxury of their new stadium away from the cosy (not quite the right word, I know) confines of Ninian Park. . . ." Ashdown adds, "To guide them, they have at least got – arguably – the division's best manager at the helm in the shape of Rod-Stewart-loving Dave Jones."

To get Ashdown's predictions, go here. He sees thing this way: Champions: West Brom; Promoted: Sheffield United; Play-offs: Middlesbrough, Cardiff, Newcastle, Reading; Relegated: Coventry, Blackpool, Scunthorpe.

* The Telegraph's predictions for the new football season have Cardiff City in the mix for a playoff spot. Their view of City's prospects is coloured by the end-of-the-season debacle. "They say the play-offs are a lottery, but it would be helpful if Cardiff City could at least buy a ticket. Slipping out of the play-off places on goals scored to Preston on the final day of last season was a bitter pill to swallow." Still, the Telegraph offers this as a prediction: "Promotion is within their grasp, just as long as that pill was an upper, not a downer."

The Telegraph has sections for all 24 clubs. When you read them, you find that words like "playoffs" or "promotion" get attached to only eight clubs - Cardiff, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Reading, Sheffield United, Swansea, and West Brom. No real surprises then.

Anyway, for the link to the Telegraph's predictions, go here.

* The Times Online thinks rather highly of City's chances this year, forecasting a fourth-place finish. You'd never guess they'd rate so highly once you've read the paragraph devoted to the club's prospects for the new campaign. Here's a bit of what the Times has to say:

"Huge season for the club this, as they move into the new £48 million Cardiff City Stadium over the road from Ninian Park and Dave Jones sets about rebuilding a new team after last season's play-off push fell away at the last." The Times adds, "With Roger Johnson gone, Joe Ledley relieved of the captaincy, Paul Parry and Ross McCormack probably going, will the returning Michael Chopra be able to recapture previous glories and score the goals that could prove vital?" Following these remarks, the Times comes up with a prediction of a fourth-place finish.

For the link to the Times Online predictions, go here.

As for my own prediction, I have to say my crystal ball is pretty hazy. I don't have quite the optimism of the above forecasters. I see too much to worry about. So, I see City winding up somewhere between just missing the playoffs and a midtable (but still top-half) finish. I hope I'm wrong and the outcomes is bit more like the predictions detailed above.

"No One Believed This Day Would Ever Happen"

Thursday, August 6, 2009

BBC Sport has a story today on the dawn of a new era for Cardiff City. Penned by Peter Shuttleworth, "Cardiff's Grounds for Optimism" rehearses the long and winding road that has brought the club to the verge of an opening day in a spanking new stadium.

Shuttleworth starts out with an old canard. "Remember, former chairman Sam Hammam promised they would be one day be bigger than Barcelona." Mike Morris summed up what we ought to think of such a remark in a posting to the mailing list. "Is anyone genuinely heartbroken we are not bigger than barcelona yet?" he asks, adding, "What a stupid comment."

There are some other odd things about this story too. Manager Dave Jones is quoted as saying, "No one believed this day would ever happen." Curiously, Jones adds, "And I have to admit that 18 months ago I never thought it was going to happen but the board have delivered a new stadium." Hmm. Eighteen months ago only puts us back to February 2008. Weren't we pretty sure at that point that Ninian Park's days were numbered?

Speaking of Manager Jones, he can take you on a tour of the new stadium, provided you scroll down half the page to the embedded video. You can tell Jones is quite proud of the new palace.
