Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 02:55 p.m. - I finished Roads to Santiago by Dutch eccentric Cees Nooteboom (even his name is freaky) last night. His evocation of the conflicting pre-modern, modern, and post-modern layers of the Spanish landscape is heavy-smart and lyrical without being precious. I wanted to ride in his back seat, but I also want to experience his scholarly solitude. He's written the first guidebook for time travellers.
