I liked the summer days when it would rain lightly. I would read in my bed with the window open and let the rainy breeze blow over my face. I could hear my neighbors arguing in their kitchen, the squirrels in the trees, the birds fluttering by the eaves. When night came, my friends and I would hunt lightning bugs and load glass jars with their flickers. Usually, I was alone at home in the daytime because my mother worked at a government agency in Herndon. She would never say what agency, but she liked spy novels so I assumed it was a spy agency of some kind. I liked science fiction books. I watched science fiction movies on Saturday mornings. My father was a letter carrier. Sometimes my parents would argue about their jobs. My mother was afraid most of the time. My father didn’t think that was right. He thought she should quit, and we should move from Fairfax to Florida. She said Florida wasn’t far enough.
