Barrel Magic

Impertinence

use old fashioned
misunderstood
poetics to say
"bad usage"

what do we mean
when we waddle
about the shore?

why does that fish
stare at Marcello?

the poem should
call us into being

our desires
awaken hidden
things

what has the poet
asked to come
among us?

what have we to
do with them

Intentional Fallacy

the work moves
the critic
to say something
the author
never intended

I gave

my wife two
Bolivian maids
--one for each ear
--one of them
tells everyone
above me,
"Free time
is overrated"
--the other says,
"Now that you
don't clean
things,
how do you
find them?"

You will find

happiness only when someone
doesn't laugh
at the things
you've knitted
for the church bazaar

Buy

house move out
of apartment lose
job can't close
on house
become homeless

Burning the Town

who would know
in ten years who would care
burning the town and the people
trapped in their chairs on their porches
watching the model cars and Lionel trains
chug past the fires and collapsing factories
and the old ladies watching us trot past

in our liveries in our harnesses
as they cry and cry and dab at their brows
soot collects on their foreheads ashes around their feet
burning them down to dust and dirt
the old gentlemen turning
eyes to heaven

burning sounds
smell of clean crisp smoke
like burnt crackling
