C. Maria Plieger

"I'm an imposter. The fairies kidnapped the real C. Maria Plieger as a new-born infant, and left me in her place. My parents, who didn't believe in fairies, consequently never caught on, though they often suspected something was awry. Oh yes, I've had at least as many lessons to learn as a real human child, if not more. Human children, in fact, often seemed to be born knowing things I didn't. And why, you ask, did the Good Folk trade me in? Frankly, I didn't make a very good fairy either. To this day, I still haven't mastered flitting, dew-gathering, nor bee-calling."

"To become an artist among the fair folk, it is necessary for the individual to learn a new medium of creativity. The artist needs to learn to work with the medium of light."

Sabrina Williams

"Originally published as a hardcover in January 2005 for the Science Fiction Book Club, this 2007 paperback release of The Fair Folk: Six Tales of the Fey is an eclectic compilation of fairy tales written by prominent authors of the fantasy genre. Marvin Kaye edited the anthology and pens the introduction to the selections of fairy lore. Each selection is presented with a short biography of the author(s) and a bit of relevant background information."

"My best ideas come around four o’clock in the morning. I love, and hate, these times. My body craves more sleep, but my mind won’t rest. I write some notes on the pad by my bedside table, hoping that they are legible in the morning. I sketch the creature or faery or person I saw in my minds eye and write some more notes the following morning. Then I transfer my pattern sketch onto tracing or freezer paper and cut the pieces out. I will not make a permanent pattern until I have adjusted any kinks. The next step is to hand-dye the wool I will be working with, choosing colors that best suit the feel of the project, the emotion I felt when this creature made itself known to me. I like to use several colors and there are always a few color surprises they way I do it, but that is what I love about letting the colors blend together on the fabric instead of blending the dyes. After the fabric is dyed, washed and dried I transfer the pattern pieces onto the fabric by tracing around them, marking directly on the wool. Sometimes I’ll sew directly on these lines, sometimes I’ll make a chin a little larger or the ears a little more pointy. Then I turn, wire and stuff, sewing shut openings and attaching limbs onto bodies. To make the doll come to life I needle sculpt parts of the face and body and use a felting needle for the facial details, painstakingly pushing bits of hand-dyed wool roving into the fabric. Only after the creature is costumed and they have told me their name and their story do I put my signature on their body. My work is shown and sold in many exclusive gift stores on the East Coast and I will be a participating artisan at Faeriecon in Philidelphia, PA and in the exhibit 'Playful Things' at the Wisconsin Center for the Visual Arts."

"Bring your beads, buttons, scraps of fabric, and findings from nature. I'll bring my hot glue guns, clippers, tiny pillows, beads, buttons, lace, ribbons, fabric, oddities of nature, and a few tiny surprises. If there are woods nearby, we will take a little field trip outside to gather from the local nature. (Faeries don't always like materials that are foreign to them. They prefer it if you build your homes and furnishings from things you find yourself while in nature."

"The chief of Ireland's gods was The Dagda, the giver of life and the bestower of all bounties. He was the keeper of the 'club of creation.' One end of the club brought death, the other end could restore the life of a dead person. The Dagda lived at the Sidh of Brug na Boinne, the finest of all faerie mounds in Ireland. Here he kept--in addition to the club of creation--a magic harp and a magic cauldron . . ."

"Rei Toei could make herself very small. Six inches tall, she sat on Rydell's pillow, in the salt-frosted plastic dome of his room at the bed-and-breakfast, and he felt like a child. When she was small, the projection seemed more concentrated; she was brighter, and it made him think of fairies in old anime, those Disney things. She could as easily have had wings, he thought, and fly around, trailing glowing dust if she wanted. But she only sat there, even more perfect at six inches tall, and talked with him."
