July 14, 03 | 10:49 a.m. | Feeling: just got up.

My Dad just got home! A few people may recall that he has been teaching at Memorial, U of Newfoundland for the past year. It's a good thing that he taught me from an early age to shun sentimentality--else surely I would have felt depressed and missed him.

He's staying in TO for less than a week before heading off to Edinburgh to continue in his research. In the fall, he may be going to China as a guest lecturer for God knows how long.

Oh, my Mom took me to Best Buy and she bought me Paint Shop Pro 7 as an early birthday present. Actually, the store only *had* ver 7, but that's fine because I've read that the new version is really complicated. Indeed, learning 7 is already challenging enough! I must resist the temptation to revert back to my neolithic 4.12....

I finished Invisible Man by Ellison. It's a shockingly good book. I use that term because Ellison's use of simple symbolism (e.g., our Black hero consistently trips down into basements, pits--the Black Hole of White Society so to speak) is astonishingly vivid in its lucidity. I need to do a ton of background research into American history circa 1930-50 in order to begin to understand the deeper connotations of this novel. On a lighter note, I finished vol. 1 of Northanger Abbey, confirming the favourable impression I got from it when I last read it in Grade 6. Catherine is such a likeable, earthy and ditzy heroine! Though I still love Elizabeth best (who doesn't)!

Okay, I removed .htaccess from my blog sub-directory so hopefully...people can see the new layout now! If you're still getting a "no direct-linking" image, please please please say so--just drop a line in my gbook or something. Thanks for your patience.

July 11, 03 | 01:01 a.m. | Feeling: Tired.

Everything is going well, so my absence from blogging has less to do with angst than general lack of time and sheer physical exhaustion.

Thank you for recommending those interesting YA titles; must check out! Along with Di's picks--The Ring and Battle Royale, and Amy's rec's--my Rand books have finally arrived, but not at an opportune time because right now, I have to read/finish up:

  • Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
  • Hermsprong by Robert Bage
  • Absolom, Absolom by Faulkner
  • The Absentee by Maria Edgeworth
  • Northanger Abbey by Austen
As you can see, I'm, uh, VERY behind in my readings....

I saw an interesting news-report on the CBC tonight (I'm trying to find a transcript of the report on their website with no luck so far). Anyway, it was discussing the current trend among some fashion designers to start targetting a pool of potential consummers who have previously been neglected (and even shunned): women who wear a size 12+. As one young, petite, designer put it--just because a woman is large doesn't mean she doesn't want to look fashionable but the fact is that women who do wear size 12+ have a hard time finding anything in most stores. Okay, this sounds like a positive fashion trend, right? But according to this one scientist and would be author, it is destructive for fashion designers to start catering to plus-sized women because it is making obesity acceptable in society. He argued that, since obesity is dangerous to one's health (undeniably true), society should not encourage obesity (by making clothing sizes bigger; by creating chic clothes for fat people, instead, we should all express collective dissaproval of obese people in order to help them in the long run. Does anyone else see a huge flaw in this guy's logic?

Why does a size 12 necessarily spell obesity? I think that that critic is missing the point completely. I don't think these new designers are approving obesity, rather, promoting normalcy. On the other hand, I do agree with that guy on one point--certain stores (*cough* GAP) should not rename their clothing size "6" if it was previously an "8". While certain, vain, people may find it flattering to buy size 6 clothes rather than the expected 8, it creates a lot of confusion and frustration on the part of others; dare I say it, people like me: I hate going from store to store, uncertain of my real size--6, 8 or 10?--because each store has their own special little system dress sizes. Don't get me wrong, I still adore GAP, it's just that their inconsistency is time-consumming.

On another note, Paul, I'm totally coming to UTARPA's next showing for Utena. I hope you'll be there too because I need to return your DVD! Blah, stupid Bravenet changed my counter code. I was almost at 20 000, but I'd much prefer to install a better counter in its place. I also need to make a new layout for the blog!

July 4, 03 | 12:43 a.m. | Feeling: I'm still alive!

Oh my, school is getting busy--in a good way. One of my favourite Profs (despite the fact that she's a tough marker ;_;) offered, with all delicacy, to be a referer if I should need her help for grad studies. I was SO pleased!

Today in class, I noticed (not for the first time) that the guy sitting beside me is also enrolled in my C18th class. "Hi, I think you're also in my 18th Century class--with Professor G--?..." I asked politely. He just grunted and didn't even turn around to acknowledge me. My God, what a rude person! I hope he fails another year (this is his 9th year of undergrad, I believe). Well, I think he's absolutely pathetic, so I'm not very bothered by this rude snub.

Demon Eyes Kyou: SDK's eye-catch art consists of a series of striking and beautiful portraits of the main characters Yukimura Sanada -- He's extremely intriguing, not to mention totally bishounen! As I was saying to Laine, I recently got Samurai Deeper Kyo vol. 1--and I liked it! Compared to Kenshin, it's B-rate (e.g., the humour is flat and the sword-techniques are not worth mentioning), but if you're looking for a beautifully animated, energetic, action-packed and bishounen-filled series, then I would recommend it. I have no clue where the series is heading--or which characters are good or bad for that matter--and I'm similarly stumped when it comes to the romantic subplots: is under-aged looking Lady Sakuya Kyo's former lover or Kyoshiro's?? Maybe one of the men's sister? And what's the deal with pretty-boy Yukimura Sanada--does he have a twin sister or does he like to cross-dress as a girl in his spare time? Clearly, I'm very confused: the series is highly intriguing, and I can't wait for the next installment.

Bummer, they liscensed Wolf's Rain.

Amy's new Kamui-licious layout will knock your socks off! The rainbow of pink, lilac and baby blue colours make for an amazing mélange: Alexiel.net, whoohoo! Expansive, bold and pretty new blog layouts here, here, and here.

Today's layout is based on my fanart of Astarte, one of the aristocratic Satans from Kaori Yuki's Angel Sanctuary. I only wish I had the skills to do justice to the original beauty of this character. For more info on Astarte, see Sloth.
