Peaceful Co-Existence with Windows?
Friday, June 30, 2000

Jean-Louis Gassee, CEO of Be Inc. (the home of BeOS, the coolest and most elegant operating system on the market today; hence, no one uses it) comments on the complete lack of PC OEMs selling multi boot computers. Alas, yet another Microsoft conspiracy! Capitalism doesn't really exist folks, because we are rapidly approaching an era where there is no free market, only a few megacorporations running the whole show. No government has the will to do much about it since they're all too busy stuffing their pockets full of $$$$$.

Where Are They?
Friday, June 30, 2000

If extraterrestial civilizations exist why haven't we found them? Why haven't they contacted us? It seems to be a paradox, but I can't believe that humans all are alone in the universe. Just because we haven't heard from extraterrestials doesn't mean they're not out there.

Why postpone the inevitable?

Vision? Nary! Magazine

"The journal that espouses nothing - and therefore espouses something"

This stuff fits my grim and tweaked out moods as of late.

Just a normal town...
Thursday, June 29, 2000

Scary article on the threat of electromagnetic pulse weapons:

"Produce a high-power flash of radio waves or microwaves and it will fry any circuitry it hits. At lower powers, the effects are more subtle: it can throw electronic systems into chaos, often making them crash. In an age when electronics finds its way into just about everything bar food and bicycles, it is a sure way to cause mass disruption. Panic the financial markets and you could make a killing as billions are wiped off share values. You could freeze transport systems, bring down communications, destroy computer networks. It's swift, discreet and effective."

Now we can have armegeddon without harming a soul, just by destroying the electronic infrastructure that supports our modern society.

Tiny robots flex their plastic muscles
Thursday, June 29, 2000

Sweedish researchers have made teeny tiny robots that use plastic 'muscles' to move and pick up objects. Is this a fledgling step to full blown nanotechnology?

Darkhorse 2000
Tuesday, June 20, 2000

Lots of information about third party candidates for the U.S. presidency, some serious and some not. Are any of these folks qualified? Who knows. They couldn't be any worse than Gore or Bush (except for the various rascist/racist candidates, blech!)

Tomato Nation
Sunday, June 11, 2000

OK, it's not that strange or unusual and it's not about tomatoes, but Sarah's razor sharp pop culture observations are right on the money. Plus, she doesn't annoy me with that 'cooler than thou' attitude of so many of her contemporaries. I wish I could write a tenth as well as she does (if I could, I wouldn't be wasting time on this weblog, that's for sure!).

The Black Peoples' Prison Survival Guide
Sunday, June 11, 2000

I never gave much thought to what prison life is like except for the fact that I would crack up in a very short time being confined in a metal cage with hundreds of other people. This page is somewhat political, as you might expect, but it did get me thinking about the effectiveness of prisons and our judicial system.

The W-Files
Saturday, June 10, 2000

Wisconsin is even stranger than I thought.

Did you know that I once seriously considered calling this weblog Hodag? I figured that the reference was too obscure.

Half Fish, Half Robot
Friday, June 9, 2000

A robot has been combined with neurons from a sea lamprey to create an 'artificial animal'. The hybrid machine changes its behavior as the brain cells adapt to different stimuli. Perhaps this is the first step to fusing man and machine.

Vampire Facts

Francis Bacon Image Gallery
Thursday, June 8, 2000

Francis Bacon was a unique painter who has influenced me greatly with his unique and disturbing visions. This beautiful website has images of his work, discussion of his themes, lots of articles and a brief biography of his life.

Video Clothes: 'Brand' New Idea
Wednesday, June 7, 2000

Soon, even clothing may be used as mobile billboards.

fuckedcompany.com - the dot.com deadpool
Wednesday, June 7, 2000

Bet on which overhyped, overvalued dot-com company is the next to go belly up. It's the end of the 'new economy' as we know it. . . and I feel fine! I know I shouldn't gloat, but the greed surrounding dot-coms has been unbearable and it's nice to see karma straighten things out.

You can also watch the dot-com sector collapse here.

Enemas of the state
Tuesday, June 6, 2000

An interview with five conspiracy researchers and commentators.

A society that can't resist The Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync will be unable to resist fascism."

Truer words were never spoken. . .

Desire to Be Rich and Famous Called a Path to Discontent
Tuesday, June 6, 2000

Seeking fame and fortune won't make you happy:

". . . psychological researchers have been amassing an impressive body of data suggesting that satisfaction simply is not for sale. Not only does having more things prove to be unfulfilling, but also people for whom affluence is a priority in life tend to experience an unusual degree of anxiety and depression as well as a lower overall level of well-being. Likewise, those who would like nothing more than to be famous or attractive do not fare as well, psychologically speaking, as those who primarily want to develop close relationships, become more self-aware or contribute to the community."

Since I'm not likely to ever be rich or famous, consider me relieved!

Britain's UFO secrets revealed
Monday, June 5, 2000

The U.K. Ministry of Defense has released some UFO related documents. This is the most interesting part of the article:

". . . declassified government documents in the Public Records Office from June 1965 reveal that 'it was official MoD policy to play down the subject of unidentified flying objects and to avoid attaching undue public attention or publicity to the subject... as a result we have never had any political pressure to mount a large-scale investigation'. Other documents from that time state: 'The press are never to be given information about unusual radar sightings_ and [unusual visual] sightings are in no circumstances to be disclosed to the press.'"

That sounds like direct and conclusive proof of a cover up to me! Just how much UFO data is hidden from us under the blanket of 'national security' or 'military intelligence'?

Temperature Dictates Spending Habits
Monday, June 5, 2000

Japanese consumers spend more when the weather is nice. Makes sense to me!

Eureka! Scientists break speed of light
Monday, June 5, 2000

U.S. particle physicists claim that they have accelerated light pulses to three hundred times light speed:

"The research is already causing controversy among physicists. What bothers them is that if light could travel forward in time it could carry information. This would breach one of the basic principles in physics - causality, which says that a cause must come before an effect. It would also shatter Einstein's theory of relativity since it depends in part on the speed of light being unbreachable.

I'm very skeptical of this claim, but its a fascinating development. Could Einstein have been completely wrong? Maybe we're closer to faster than light travel than we think!

Japan Tops for Longevity, U.S. Drops in Study
Monday, June 5, 2000

The United States trails most other developed countries in average life expectancy. Personally, I think we're all just too stressed out in this country, plus we indulge in gross overconsumption of all sorts. If we had a simpler lifestyle, we'd probably live a lot longer!
