Alt.music.....
THANKS A LOT, GOOGLE. If it weren't bad enough that they have a decent image search, now Google is archiving Usenet posts like the one linked above. Horrifying to go back and see all the stupid stuff you said in, oh, 1996 or so.
Mercedes is caustic
So I was just talking with my coworker Mercedes. We were discussing furniture, and I said that I know exactly what I want, right down to the telephone. "No wonder you can't find a boy you like," she said. "You're picky about phones!"
True enough.
So I sent her a picture of the phone I'd like (link above) as well as a shot of this week's Mr. Foxy Man I Will Never Approach, For Reason of Laziness and Fear of Rejection. This is what she wrote:
---------
Who's the boy? Does he actually exist?
I won't even tell you what I think the phone looks like. Picky picko sicko!

What kind of a car do you drive?
(sheepishly) I just bought a Lexus ES300 (snicker). I had an old 1990 Nissan Stanza and it drove me crazy. I'd go on tour for a month and come back and I'd have to put a $1,000 into it. It would break down so much! With all the money I was paying in repairs, I could have been making car payments. So I bought a new car and I'll keep it forever. I like it, but I don't feel right driving it.
Tribute to America
Do not stop believing, not for one moment.
Wallpaper
Next time you're picnicking outside your Arne Jacobsen beachut on the sand at Klampenbord, spare a thought for Erik Magnussen, the Danish designer who made picnicking in cold countries a pleasure rather than a pain.
Wallpaper is a very funny magazine. I sometimes flip through it at the bookstore, but last night I decided to plunk down the cash and pick up the April copy. Boy, is it funny! Almost everybody in the magazine is white and well-coiffed. Who the hell lives like this? Rather, who the hell would want to live like this?
Open Letter to Jennifer Love Hewitt
In general, this site is reminiscent of a publication that rhymes with McMeanie's. Bryan Charles wrote this piece and a few others (including a great one about Williamsburg).
Focus on the Family meets Will and Grace
Focus on the Family is a conservative Christian group that is anti-feminist, anti-choice, anti-gay, on and on. Their initial letter to the folks at Will and Grace is amusing enough, but the reply! Priceless. I especially enjoy how the editor dots his I.
Starrett-Lehigh Building
The site of my first job. Downstairs, a greasy spoon of a diner. Lots of construction workers who leered at the women. LL Cool J in the hall, filthy bathrooms, elevators that rarely worked.
My current job has a cafe, a workout room, a spa, and skylights. Movin' on up...
Aerial View of South Haven, Michigan
I went to grade and high schools here, but I haven't been back in over a year. Two years? I can't keep it straight anymore.
Heavy Metal Parking Lot
Yeow. RealVideo documentary, released in the mid-80s, about Judas Priest concertgoers. Again: yeow.
Women in the Director's Chair
... WIDC was an international women's film festival here in Chicago. I attended one night to view Grrlyshow, which features Hues and Bust and Bitch. You can't see that film online, but you can check out some others at Bust.com. Neato!
Band a Minute
Heh! Short descriptions of all those crazy rock bands the kids are so into these days. Stereolab and Cap'n Jazz are perhaps the funniest, but take your own look.
Money Songs
Disco your way out of debt.
Cute Dave Shettler
I met Dave back when he was a wee high school thing. Now he is all grown up. He is one of the best drummers I have met (and this counts for a lot, considering my drummer-dating habit). One of his bands, Moods for Moderns, is touring now. You should go see them if you like Sloan and Chisel. Or nice Beck lookalikes with shaggy hair.
The John Hughes Effect
Oh, wily Kate! She and I talked on the phone last night, discussing our feelings on feminism and sororities and the idiots at her school. Here she talks about The James Bond Effect and the John Hughes Effect; personally, the latter sounds more appealing.
