My pitas page
why c. totally rocks
among other reasons, because he actually remembered that my fave shakespeare play is "twelfth night," and for my b-day we are going to go see it done at BAM in january. starring emily watson, even. pretty freakin cool.
the history of the siege of lisbon
this is what i am reading for pleasure right now. it is really, really good once you get into it, and get past the fact that the dialogue is not offset by quotation marks--all of one conversation will be lumped into a big paragraph, with each person's lines separated by commas. it's really more true to how conversations go, if you think about it, but a bit tricky for a beginner. and it makes me miss lisbon--the street names are real, the tram numbers are real. i miss the strong coffee and the sidewalk cafes and the lovely quality of light. but now: back to work...
chris martin
is the nicest rock star in the world.
national book award nominee
let's just say having an author nominated for this does not make one's job easier. in fact, it makes it infinitely more difficult. if she does not watch out, this author in particular could find herself wearing cement overshoes at the bottom of the east river.
changing the rosary
i know he's the pope and all, but is he really allowed to do that? i mean, if it ain't broke...
how was your weekend?
mine was spent staining our formerly-unfinished dresser and putting on new drawer handles. it was a bit more time-consuming than i thought it would be; don't believe the can when it says it "only" takes 8 hours. and then the whole putting on new handles that didn't match up with the holes of the last handles...it was an expereince i am glad i won't have to repeat anytime soon. but it looks fab if i do say so myself.
Jimmy Carter
officially a nice guy.
remarkable restraint
i finally spent the pottery barn gift certificates that i got last year for my birthday. i can't believe i hung onto them for so long. there are now two new bedside tables in the bedroom. it's amazing how a little thing like nice matching lamps can change the way the whole place feels. i am much more positive about the bedroom now, and i think this weekend's project of staining the dresser will only further that feeling of satisfaction.
dos caminos
just had a great lunch at this new mexican style place on park avenue south. it's owned by the same guy who dreamed up ruby foo's so of course it looks as smashing and the food tastes. two thuimbs up to the "seafood salad" which is not your local mayo-and-canned-shrimp jobby. check it out...but on the corporate card, of course.
africa and mtv
i never thought that watching "diary" could be an eye-opening experience, but last night's special on bono's trip to africa was truly fascinating. it breaks the heart to see those poor sick kids, playing in the dirt, so damn happy and alive. i want to take them all home. but perhaps for now i'll donate to bono's foundation--they seem to be working on the situation quite well as it is.
super sonic
last night was first of 4 beginner's yoga workshops, and while it is early i think i could really like this. there were times when my heart was just about racing, and when i woke up this morning i felt definite yoga-related muscle-soreness. which in my language means i did something "athletic" and healthy. go me!
bush's speech
i think we should just invade iraq and get it over with. i am tired of hearing about it. another thing i am tired of hearing is "nucular" when the word is clearly "nuclear." bush said it incorrectly every single time it appeared in his speech, and it was easily used 20+ times over the course of said speech. it drives me batty--how am i supposed to concentrate on his "message" when all i can hear is NUCULAR?
the streets
their show in nyc at the end of the month is sold out, but if you can get a ticket, you should go. they (he) are (is) great: UK hip-hop rock with some really nice hooks. i shall be there with bells on. silent bells, but bells nonetheless. [also: does anyone know how to download music from the internet onto one's cell phone? i don't get it.]
good bye, chase
hello (again), fleet. today i become way too grown up, bank account wise.
mr. bling
tempting. very tempting.
sinn fein
i like how the IRA guys quoted in this piece are offended that the police raided their headquarters. hello--you're in the IRA! did you think perhaps no one would notice the bombings?
bowie
i don't really have the money to buy tickets for this show...but i REALLY want to go. what's a space oddity girl to do? [UPDATE: it's a moot point--show was sold out by 12:03 p.m.]
scary
changing rooms
in our never-ending search for more tv to watch, c. and i are now addicted to the bbc version of the show americans know as "trading spaces." but "changing rooms" is SO much better--the resulting rooms are actually ones you wouldn't mind living in, and all the girls/women victims burst into tears of joy upon seeing the end result. and dear laurence here is the best--catty, but in a lovely british way.
free college
i find it funny that this guy is saying anyone with a B average and higher could go to college for free. not to be snotty (which of course i'm about to be) but can't we aim a LITTLE bit higher than a B average? any goofball can pull that out! how about an A average? aim for the stars, for the love of god.
are you an icelandic horse lover?
who could resist posting this link? not i, say i.

this month's theme: self-improvement. the above link is what you get when you google "archive self-improvement". like i just did.
