The Amsterdam 2000 Page
It's not that far off anymore, just
..until we're somewhere in Amsterdam, our minds floating along paths of tulips, smiles spread across our faces, love in the air, weed in our pockets and the forever, yes the forever reminding us of our smallness, simplicity, purity, now... Help make this page the place to begin this adventure- send me your info, your links, your poor, your greasy, and I'll post 'em! -James

A Timely Poem
just two mo' days
til' the purple haze
gots grass to graze
gots spliffs to blaze
gots hookers to pays
if i gots to get laid
hopes i don't lose my way
in a glassy eyed daze
cause that citys a maze
just two mo' days

Amsterdam 2000 - The Travelog
On 12/26, this weblog will become a travelog for our adventures in Amsterdam this New Year. Visit http://amsterdam.pitas.com/ from 12/26 to 1/5 for our daily shenanigans and drug-induced meanderings. We are electro.
Party Update
Fresh updates on what appears to be the most frequently updated page for these things. Now: parties: Big Bang, Love Train, Milkweg, and more! That Love Train party looks mit-y fyne, yo!
Travlang
"Your Travel And Language Supersite" is an interesting site where you can learn bits of Netherland-speak before you go to impress alla lay-dies. In truth, English is plenty in Amsterdam, but why not try?
wisdom
Since the Amsterdam 2000 page wasn't eating up quite enough of my company time, I present you with wisdom, a weblog with all my other links...
Stoners In The Haze
An extended travelogue by Andrew Looney that explores Amsterdam from the perspective of a non-doper come to explore cannabis culture in Amsterdam. Interesting.
Schiphol Airport
What you see is what you get- Amsterdam's Shiphol Airport site.
Lover's Amsterdam
A meal, some wine, the beautiful canals viewed from the warm, cosy interior of a canal boat. Oh baby, I'm getting HARD.
The Internet Guide to Amsterdam
A fact-filled practical guide to Amsterdam- intended for printing. Addresses such mundane but important topics as seasonal temperature, electricity, transport & communications.
The Amsterdam Stun
This odd little site answers the question "Are there sloppy drunks in Amsterdam too? The answer is, yes.
Lotsa Club Links For alla those club kids- waste some time exploring the following Amsterdam club-related webpages: Chemistry, Melkweg, Paradiso, Sinners In Heaven, !Strictly Magazine, iT, Escape, Techno Online, Hemkade and Flyer Site. If you can't find a rave with these links, you've eaten too much e baby, too much e.
Please be advised that not all of the above sites are all-English.
The Hip Guide To Amsterdam
Ooh! Oooh! This site is so tasty! I'd like to roll it up into a little cone and use it as a suppository! Excellent pics, strong content, fast loading- all the things I love! Features a Quick Tour, Museums, Events, Cuisine, Coffeeshops, Red Light, Maps & Pics. Definitely hit this one!
Be Here Now
I used this list last time I went, and was not disappointed with this guy's choices. I missed Woodstock in March, but maybe in December...
Toke Of The Town
A Salon travelogue- she's not stoned... or is she?
Rokerij
Rokerij has 4 coffeeshops in Amsterdam that seem to be well-liked among most US travellers that I've read commentary from. Here's their site- attractive but lacking much content.
-James
Public Transport Amsterdam
Yep- info on the Trams, the Taxis, the Boats, the Bikes and Bus. Check out the tram map for amusement value. What tram will take me to Nieuwezijds Kolk? Can I get to Stadhouderskade from there? It's easier than it looks, though...
-James
Anne Frank House
First time I went to Amsterdam, I skipped this 'cause I didn't wanna be "bummed out." Second time, I went the The Museum Of Flourescent Art instead. This time I'm gonna go, and ENJOY being bummed! Thank you SIR, may I have another??
-James
The Bulldog
Sure, most people say The Bulldog is the most commercialized, touristy places to smoke in Amsterdam. That might be true, but all I recall about it is that crazy nook in the back with currencies of all nations hanging from the ceiling. That place had terrible ventilation, we smoked, and smoked, and smoked, and none of the smoke left, just got recirculated back into our lungs . . . over and over . . . aahhhh
-James
Holland, Land of the Real Free
Yes, the Americans are suffering under the drug war. On This site, we are reminded of these facts, from the Holland perspective.
-James
Y2K Airline Links
One of the most common questions I'm asked when I tell people about our pilgrimage to Amsterdam for the New Year is: "aren't you afraid there's gonna be plane crashes after Y2K?" I respond that, sure I'm afraid of my plane crashing, but I can fly, baby, I can fly.... Follow these links for more info on this topic: Netherlands DOT Report / FAA Y2K Page, and don't forget to get drunk as hell on your flight and cross your fingers!
-James
Amsterdam Channels
Besides being a full-featured site including reviews on hotels, discos, coffeeshops, restaurants, museums, theatres and sex clubs (gulp!), Amsterdam Channels has a cool "tour through the city" feature where you navigate yourself on a map and it brings up photos corresponding to location. It also has chat, a knowledge base and an active BBS. Very worthwhile, I reckon.
-James
Bud's Guide
"The Home Of Coffeeshop Information On The Internet", Bud's Guide looks great and works right (updated yesterday, just hours after I issued the challenge to make it work- what a coincidence!). However, it's still lacking info on many of the shops listed. Content-light now, but keep an eye on it.
-James
Yahooka.com
This content-rich, quick-loading and easy-to-navigate site is packed like a qp baggie with stuff to check out regarding WEED. Sure, it's got almost nothing to do with Amsterdam per se, but I thought I'd share it with all youse guys anyway. I'm just like that. I see a good thing and I want to share it with everybody, spread the word, y'know.... if you like it, though, you really ought to check out DRC Net... it's sumfin! -James
Amsterdam Coffeeshop Guide
Yep, another butt-ugly coffeeshop guide. I'm starting to wonder if it's not a requirement for coffeeshop reviewing: "Sec 1.09b - all coffeeshop reviews on the internet must be housed on an atrociously ugly site utilizing only the brightest, most painful colors.." However, it actually has some content, unlike many of their peers. Worth checking out if you're patient and wear sunglasses.
-James
Guapo's Smartshop
Another content-lite smartshop in Amsterdam.
-James
Coffeeshop Smokey
A decent site with a nice "welcome" section featuring plenty of quick-loading pics alongside a walk through Amsterdam.
-James
Elements Of Nature
Another content-light smart-shop site, this one with links to their affiliated erotic and hempseed shops. They might be great sites, but I can't tell- they're blocked where I work- usually a good sign. Check 'em out & let me know.
-James
Magic Mushroom Gallery
Currently under construction [10/19], this is anudder on a'those wacky "smart shops."
-James
Conscious Dreams
I admit it, I've gotten a little bored surfing for weed & coffeeshop linx. Conscious Dreams is a "smart-shop" in Amsterdam- which means it sells 'shrooms, peyote, and so on. I visited Conscious Dreams twice a day for the whole week I was there in March, and by the end of the week, the giant dude who had waited on me every time was no longer dour, only surly.
-James
coffeeshop-amsterdam.com
This fledgling site has a nice, clean look and is easy to navigate, though slightly light on content. I expect this one will be all good by the end of November.
-James
THC Coffeeshop Index
A long, long list of what appears to be ALL of the coffeeshops in Amsterdam. None are reviewed, but their addresses are provided and some have links to their homepages.
-James
Cannabis Information Network
A giant webring with extra guacamole and sour cream, I discovered Cannabis InfoNet thru a link on Grey Area. It lists links to cannabis resources of every variety. Smoke 'em if you got 'em! -James
Dampkring
Another fat-ass coffeeshop site full of heady graphix and smokin' shit! Their front page is chock-full of other cannabis-related linx, click on them- IF YOU DARE! Check out their "Do's & Dont's", pix of inside the shop and history of the decriminalization of Amsterdam- IF YOU DARE! Grab my crotch- IF YOU DARE! Play their games- IF YOU DARE! Come to Amsterdam for the New Year- IF YOU DARE![Warning:Dampkring is a graphic-intensive site and may take a while to load, depending on your connection...]
-James
Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory
This is the best (and most thorough) site I've seen indexing coffeeshops- it has a map, ratings by people of various nations, etc..
-James
Amsterdam Pix
Amy has been kind enough to scan & send me a number of pictures taken when we (Scott, Amy & I) were there Christmas '94. I'm the guy with the beard and ugly jacket. The Canals, Ah, the canals. Inside The Heineken Brewery Like a Gingerbread Village! I Saw The Signs, And They Opened Up My Eyes "Packing a Can" Under Shady Bridge
On the steps of the Van Gogh Museum
The many bicycles of Amsterdam
The Cok City Hotel
Unfortunately, this pitas.com site is intended for weblog use, and as such would require extensive modification for pix to be integrated into the site. Click above!
-James
Grey Area
The Grey Area is know for it's . . . bong selection, mostly. A clearly American-minded coffeeshop of some noteriety, I peeked in there last March, and they do, indeed, have numerous bongs. They also have a beautiful, interesting website that gives me the wets. Cheque it owt!
-James
Global Chillage
I've read that this coffeeshop is tha bomb, and if their site is anything like it, I believe it! It is way cool- shockwave, weird graffix, etc. Chekkit out!
-James
Marijuana/Hash Prices
"Hm, let's see... if the Super Skunk costs 16 Euros a gram, and a Euro is equal to 2.2 Guilders, and 1 Dollar is approximately 2 Guilders, and I smoke about 5/8ths of it per day, will $200 be enough to keep me high for 10 days?" You figure it out. Also has an interesting legalization article at bottom.
-James
The S0MA Underground Guide To Amsterdam
Much less impressive than its title...
-James
Amsterdam Photos Galore!
For those of you who haven't yet been- take this photo trip thru Amsterdam. Lotsa pix, no porn.
-James
About.com Amsterdam Webguide
This is a multi-part guide covering all sorts of topics and full o'links. Your About.com guide is Durant Imboden, and I would like to say that his beret makes him look like a big wank! ERT!
-James
Coffeeshops
Reviews on 30+ coffeeshops.
-James
Amsterdam Homepage
This ugly site is, naturally, devoted to cannabis. There are ratings of specific types of Amsterdam Weed, as well as coffeshops. Apparently run by American stoners that got "caught" in Amsterdam.
-James
Amsterdam Hotspots
This site has got party-oriented Amsterdam links and information galore- including "smoke," "gay," "clubs," and "red light." The more I surf it, the more I like it. To date, the best site to be found on this page for the naughty stuff
-James
Visit Holland
Another tidy tourist site.
-James
Amsterdam For Dummies
Boy, is this site ugly. I haven't checked it out, but you can!
As always, send me your Amsterdam Links to beef up this page and help make it a useful resource to all of us! I'll credit you and then you'll know- "my penis is hotter than a throbbing meat sausage!"
-James
Hotel La Richelle
Hotel Novotel
You folks from Detroit will surely recognize these from that mac-daddy packet you guys made up!
-James
Mapquest
If y'don't know exatly where in Amsterdam your hotel is or need to find an attraction- Mapquest should help. (See Also City Of Amsterdam site which has map searching capability).
-James
Visit Amsterdam
Another government-based tourism site- a little easier to use and more thorough than the "City Of" Site
As always, send me your Amsterdam Links to beef up this page and help make it a useful resource to all of us! I'll credit you and then you'll know- "my crotch is wetter than a slurpee on the sidewalk!" -James
Amsterdam City Online
This is the "Official" Amsterdam Site- it has plenty of info on Museums, Maps, etc. A little dry, but good for looking for stuff OTHER than whores and coffeshops.
-James
Time Out Amsterdam
This site, by the makers of the famous Time Out alterna-traveler books, is a decent source of information on Amsterdam. Highlights: "This Month" (activities), a currency calculator and one-click weather news.
As always, send me your Amsterdam Links to beef up this page and help make it a useful resource to all of us! I'll credit you and then you'll know- "my crotch is hotter than a turkey pot pie!"

Snooze checks in & proffers advice
Since A'dam will be full of a tons of partiers for New Years, it will also be full of pickpockets. Word to the wise. Make at least 3 copies of your passport. Put a copy in each of your luggage and keep one with you at all times. Next, lock up your original passport in the Hotel's safe deposit box. Do not worry about having your original on you. All of the cops speak English and if someone really needs to see your original, they will wait. I have never had any problem with this in several countries. A stolen U.S. Passport can bring $500 - $3000 on the streets, so guard it well.
If you get into town very early, chances are that your room will not be ready. If you are taking the train downtown to Amsterdam CS (Central Station), walk straight out of the station and down two blocks to get change at the Dam Hotel.
For train schedules, try www.ns.nl. It has an English link to check out train schedules in Holland and Europe. You can also get fare info for Holland trains.
A place I just visited was near Arnhem (Oosterbeek) which has an Airborne Museum and Army Museum. Kind of cool but since the trip is 1 hour by train each way, you almost need most of a day. There is a decent coffeeshop in Arnhem - Casablanca - near the train station, too. If you like WW II history, this recounts Operation Market - Garden very well.
Here's my travel plans:
12 / 26 Chicago - Amsterdam 5:15 PM - 11:00 AM (12 / 27)(United FL # 928)
1 / 2 Amsterdam - Chicago 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM (United FL # 959)
I'm staying at the Owl Hotel just a couple of blocks N.W. of Vondel Park, near Leidseplein.
See you in A'dam.
thanks, Snooze

Words of Experience from Snooze
"The best place to exchange U.S. cash (NOT travellers checks) is a small place at the Dam Hotel. They
seem to give the best rate for cash transactions with no commission or bullshit, but T Checks get nailed for a fee.
The Dam Hotel is directly out of the main train station (A'dam CS), across the first canals and continue straight for the equivalent of 1 - 2 blocks and it is on your right.
Once your group is together in Schipol Airport after
customs, go immediately to the train ticket stalls for local trains without changing money as they can do it for you there and give you a ticket downtown. You really don't get screwed on a $5 - $8 transaction in regard to 1.97 or 1.99 to the $.
By the way, the coffeeshop I always stop into is the Bluebird. Quiant, no T.V., decent tunes, EXCELLENT selections, never very busy, good staff and in a quiet area."
Thoughts On Preparedness
- Passports: You have your passport by now . . . right?
- Exchange: you can exchange $$$ for Guilders at your local bank, but if you don't, no worries- there's a good place to exchange at The Dam Hotel, not to mention the numerous exchange booths at the airport. The exchange rate wavers around 2 guildres per dollar.[see "Words of Experience from Snooze," above]
- Re-Confirmation: It may be wise for us to call our respective hotels to confirm reservations in the next month or so. Heaven forbid we arrive, they've lost our reservation, and are all booked up!
- Y2K: Hmmm... Who knows what's gonna happen? We've debated preparedness measures IN CASE there is a loss of electricity or, worse yet, general chaos. We're gonna throw a bag together with miscellanous nonperishables and some backup cash & find a mechanical locker to stash it in. Any thoughts?
-James
Words To The Wise
The following excerpt is from Deb via Jen:
I do recommend these coffeeshops (for weed): The Greenhouse, across from Waterloo Square and Sensimilia, in the 'handboogstraat'. They have the best weed. Don't go to the Bulldog or the Grasshopper, they are too expensive and very touristy. Also, across from the central station, on the square, there's a tourist information hall. It is called VVV. They can help you with all sorts of things.
The red light district is a lot of fun too. It is very safe so don't worry about that, just don't buy any drugs from people on the streets. That area has a lot of nice bars with live music, coffeeshops and a combination of both.
If you or your friend are interested; there are some 'smartdrug stores', they sell mushrooms, peyote and all that good stuff. There is one on the 'Bloemenmarkt'. Just ask any one for directions to that street, it is in the center, near the 'munt square' Then, if you want to visit some museums, there is a sex museum and a museum of mariuana and hasjies.
The Nihilist's Flight Info:
Brian That Doesn't Live Here has finally broken down and bought his ticket! In a Herculean feat of will, he has signed on for a flight from Philly --> Detroit --> Amsterdam and back! Garsh! He'll be flying KLM 5783, departing from Philly at 6:05pm on 12/26. He'll be arriving in Detroit for his stopover from 8:15pm - 9:45pm, so if you're gonna be at the airport at that time, OR are going to be on this flight to Amsterdam, email Brian to meet up. We're all so glad that Penetr8ting Gaze Man could make it, let's hear it for Brian! Hip! hip! hooray!
He leaves Amsterdam on 1/5 at 11:00am, KLM 6067
-James

10/11/99 - Amsterdam 2000 page is . . . er . . erected.
In an effort to better coordinate the efforts of disparate groups in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and Detriot, Michigan, your webmaster, James, has put up the Amsterdam 2000 page. Here you will find information about our flights, where we're staying, links to pertinent Amsterdam sites and other, completely useless information.
