Do I really look that young? Still?
Recently, I've been meaning to switch my bank account from TD to PC. There are certain issues I have with TD, among them the interest rate (or lack thereof) and the monthly charges that apply if my balance falls below $1000. I mean, penalize you for being poor? It makes no sense!
So I paid PC a brief visit the other day, and found that I need to somehow dig up my old citizenship card for ID. But my point is, the two ladies there kept asking my age.
"I'm 19."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"You mean you've already turned 19?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
Then a similar scene occured when I dropped into TD to ask if there would be a cancellation fee. Only this one was more funny and less annoying.
"Do you have any picture ID ... like a GoCard?"
And of course GoCards only apply for high school students. And I'm not. A high school student. Anymore.
But anyway. It's alright, I suppose.
I find that freestyle writing doesn't come easily to me anymore. This is disappointing, because it used to be so natural, and quick. Now it's like a laboured process, because I subconsciously self-analyze everything and identify all my non sequiturs and stylistic patterns. The obvious result of too many essays and internal assessments. At least my writing has developed ... I read some of my old work and blush at how trite it sounds.
So is it better to be an enthusiastic author who produces comparatively shallow work, or a writer of more substance who doesn't enjoy it as much?

The Hillsong concert was so good! (*_*)
Plus I actually got home in time to submit my WebCT quiz! Indirect thanks to Cecilia for making us leave because she needed to be home by 11, otherwise I would've simply forfeited 2.5% of the course mark. Heh.

Your Dominant Thinking Style: |
| Visioning You are very insightful and tend to make decisions based on your insights. You focus on how things should be - even if you haven't worked out the details. An idealist, thinking of the future helps you guide your path. You tend to give others long-term direction and momentum. |
Your Secondary Thinking Style: |
| Experimenting You're all about looking at the facts, and you could always use more of them. You see life as your lab - and you're always trying out new things, people, and ideas. The master of mix and match, you're always coming up with unique combinations. You are good at getting a group to reach consensus. |

When the hailstorm struck yesterday evening, I was in the car with my mom and Cecilia.
The two of us were pretty excited (we're immature and easily amused). There was lightning; there were rivulets appearing along the edges of the road.
And then things got a bit serious. Imagine someone on an upper level balcony tossing buckets of water and crushed ice down on you; it was something like that. I wondered fleetingly whether the windshield would break. Lightning -- and then an entire series of streetlamps would flicker and die. What's more, you could barely see. So we weren't following the dividing lines on the road ... we were following the headlights of the car directly in front of us.
By then Cecilia had changed her mind: "Maybe this isn't as fun as I first thought."
Still, at least my computer didn't crash the way Catherine's did. (XI)

The rotary evaporator is the best piece of chemistry lab equipment ever.
$5000 each, our lab director said. But almost worth inhaling all those fumes ... maybe. We've been working with an awful lot of diethyl ether lately, since it's such a common organic solvent, and the smell is just nauseating. Plus I looked it up in the back of our lab manual, and under "chemical hazards" it read "harmful vapour," among other things. Joy. Last term I spilled a suspected carcinogen over my hands due to a leaky separatory funnel, and now this.
I have my first midterm this coming Friday. So, to avoid studying for it today, I went online and worked through some HTML and CSS tutorials! I've been meaning to learn for a while now ... for no specific reason other than it seems to be a good thing to know. Anyway, it was one of my summer goals. The others are as follows:

Argh.
I reach home today by 12:30 to an empty apartment. This is not altogether surprising, but since I don't have the house keys, I can't get in. Which should only have been a minor problem, as David's elementary school is a block away and I can always search him out there and steal the keys from him. Or so I thought.
Since things tend not to work out quite so predictably, it turns out that David absent-mindedly left the keys behind -- that is, locked them in the apartment -- after returning for lunch. So he didn't have them either. Which adds another complication: if neither of my parents are home by 3:00, both of us will end up stuck outside for who knows how long.
I might also mention at this point that the reason I don't have keys to my own house is that David borrowed and lost them a while ago. And now he takes the spare set.
So now I'm at Kensington Library, ranting (well, not really) and biding my time. On the up side, this at least forces me to review CHEM 233 notes for lack of anything better to do. Oh, and by the way, I now have a pristine white polyester-cotton lab coat for CHEM 235, which I did manage to get into (yay!), and in which lab coats are mandatory (boo).

Now I've had a fair number of birthdays over the years ... but never has any one of them involved so many surprises.

Aww ... my friends from church did the sweetest thing for me this weekend! We were asked the week before to leave the 23rd free, which was okay by me since it was the day after my last final (*YES*). So I was telling Kevin about these mysterious Saturday plans over the phone:
"Where are you going?"
"I don't know; David said it was a surprise."
"A surprise for you?"
"No, why would it be only for me?"
"It's almost your birthday."
"But it's still early. I think it's supposed to be a surprise for everyone."
"If you say so." (Well, he didn't actually say this, but his voice implied it.)
Dieu, I'm so naive sometimes it's a little embarassing. Still, though, none of us except David and Mel knew in any great detail what we'd be doing in White Rock, which was where we ended up on Saturday morning. There was some sort of festival going on at the beach there, so plenty of people and banners and skimboards and cookies ... oh, and kites. Lots of kites, in addition to kite-making. For my part, I hadn't flown one since ... well, forever. It seemed archaic, even; an anachronism in an age of jetskiing and camera phones.
But fun. We left mid-afternoon after some hours of kite-flying, string-untangling, running along the shallow waters of the beach with David's dog (whose name happens to be somewhere along the lines of Smooshie or Smushy or Squishy). And then back to his place.
Where he brought Tim and me to the back atrium so we could hose down Smushy. Which turned out to be a conspiracy, since as soon as I walked into the living room ribboned balloons came flying at me from all corners.
So ... thanks once again, Linda, Rebecca, Cece, everyone. Love you all. I honestly had no idea. It isn't even my birthday until Friday! And already a cake and presents?
I think I melt too easily.

Apparently, CHEM 205 isn't offered as a summer course. That's not too big of a deal; it only means some reconsideration is in order. So what shall it be -- CHEM 233 and 235, or BIOL 204?
I need to mentally straighten some things out. Why summer school? Because I'd like to lighten my academic load during the winter session. And also work a little ahead. So should I take the course I'll probably enjoy more, or the other one just to get it over with?
Oh, did I mention ..? I've decided on a major, and a minor as well. Cell Bio & Genetics and English Literature, respectively.
